Sony SEL1855 E Mount – APS-C 18-55mm F3 – Excellent

If for sone reason you chose to get a different lens when you bought your nex e. The 16mm this is a great addition to your kit. Great sharpness from 18+mm good focus speed. I use this lens lots for general photography as its nice and compact soon i will get the 18-200mm however i expect i will still use this for portraits (which it is great at) overall this a great lensany questions please ask.

Best described as an ideal balance between quality and cost. It is pin sharp in lowlight, when used in manual focus mode at f8 to f11, iso set to auto. Specially when you get used to manual focus magnification and ‘focus peaking’. Light conditions permitting, fast and accurate when in autofocus mode. It is an ideal light weight travel lens for amateur, or professional [as backup, to carry around. ]

Every so often you pick up something and instinctively know that someone has put a lot of time, effort, money and materials into it. Of course if you are reading this you already have an nex camera or you are considering one therefore know that it is basically a baby slr – without the slr bit. It’s a good idea when you think about it – use modern electronics to get rid of the mechanical mirror and make the camera smaller and easier to use. Of course there are purists out there that will insist that an slr – digital or otherwise is better, and they may be correct, however for the majority of photographers who want a bit more than a compact but don’t want or can use all the slr abilities, this type of camera is ideal. And i suspect that most of use will be able to get more from it. Certainly because you won’t be humping a bloody great bag with you, chances are you might use it more and therefore get that ‘just so,’ shot. I bought this lens as the nex3 i got came with the wide angle lens which is good but limited for general picture taking. This one gives a 3x optical zoom, which doesn’t sound much but due to the lens, mechanics and the electronics proves to be much, much better than it reads. The lens is small for a a 18-55mm and is an alloy which gives it a weighty feel and adds to the quality perception. The photos i have taken are crisp, sharp and perfectly focused. Exposure seems to be excellent and even indoors in low light rarely does the camera require a flash. If you have an nex camera with only the wide angle lens then this is an essential reasonably priced buy which is top notch quality.

My lens arrived as stated by the supplier. I found the lens to do all as claimed by sony. However i ordered a ‘new’ lens. I did not receive a new lens. Rear lens cap missing and a substitute cannon cap. Held in place with an elastic band. The lens was supplied by ‘great western cameras ltd’i will in future continue to deal with amazon, but not if the purchase involves ‘great western cameras’.

I am extremely pleased with the lens, it has arrived in excellent condition, looks as good as new.

Kit lenses get a bad write up since they usually are somewhat inferior – an add-on to induce you to buy the camera until you can afford something better. I have two of them and they both perform beyond the kit lens expectation – very good indeed. They are not stellar lenses since you’d have to pay the price of the camera+ to even get a chance at that sort of lens but they are very usable for anyone with an e-mount camera – nex. 8 with your nex or a ‘nex body only’, then it’s a must to have one of these as a walkabout lens. You can add on a cheap raynox 250 and get a very good macro lens to boot. The best way to get this is as a kit lens, but otherwise buy it. Nex is the manual camera par excellence via its peaking function. If you choose to go manual, there are many mf lenses by canon, pentax, etc. But an af lens is still nice at times and this nex 18-55 fits the bill very well.

Give me the ability to get the pics required. I will order the lens that will be complete from short range to long distance.

This is just one of the new sony e mount lenses that shows how far lens production has come in the last ten years. Straight away the quality is evident, its light but you can feel reliability and sturdiness. For an interchangeable lens that is designed to fit on a compact body it is incredible. At the moment the system offers very few lens choices with more promised later this year. The focus and zoom rings are very smooth to turn, the zoom barrel itself could have been quieter though. The nex 5 actually has no in-built image stabilisation, so they decided to put this into the e mount lenses, whether or not this works out better or worse i’m not sure, but you can definitely see the difference in shot when comparing it to a photo taken using an old canon fd lens fitted via adapter to the nex. The auto focus of the lens is very good and silent. There are times when it doesn’t focus on what you want it to in a low light situation, but the focus ring is so nice to use that this doesn’t bother at all. The lens handles well in low light provided that a tripod is used. In normal light the quality is superb, with beautiful saturation in both raw and jpeg; with the manual focus assist option bringing the best out in terms of sharpness.

This lens arrived as an accessory with the sony nex 5. In terms of quality & performance this is not worthy of 5 stars. Its inability to autofocus at the maximum zoom (55mm) is pretty evident there are better performing lenses out there that have the ability to do so without having to manually focus at maximum zoom. This lens doesn’t allow you focus on your intended subject in low light, which again has been mentioned by another reviewer. Closeups & indoor shooting are not crisp neither sharp. No wonder these lens have shot down in price. This lens is best in performance when in outdoors shooting & taking scenery shots & landscape. All in all, seeing this was an addition to my nex 5, i wouldnt recommend this item to any intermediate photographer as. This lens might well be suitable for beginners & novices only. Other alternatives, buy a sony converter & then an a-mount 55mm compatible lens.

Much prefer this lens (18-55) to the ‘newer’ 16-50mm. 18-55 feels better built, sharper in my experience and focuses noticeably closer than the 16-50mm so you can more easily achieve ‘macro’ shots. Manual zoom is deadly silent. No motorised zoom like the 16-50 whose hum gets picked up by video. Also 18-55 has less impact on battery life. Almost sold the 18-55 until i seriously compared it to the 16-50mm. In mitigation the 16-50mm is smaller by about 50% with a slightly wider angle of view at the 16mm end.
