Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2 : Perfect walk around lens

I’d been thinking of buying this lens for a very long time because of the expensive price and the heavy weight. However, i can’t be happier when i receive it. The lens came in perfect condition, shinny brand new. The delivery time from amazon is as quick as always. The price from amazon is around 200 euro cheaper than my local camera shop. I’m also very happy with the results of the lens. Super fast focus, silent motor, sharp clarity.

Not the latest, but absolutely good enough to produce high quality imagery for commercial purposes, while keeping overheads in check. No qualms shooting this wide-open, when necessary.

Pin sharp as you’d expect from a pro grade lens but the front element moves in and out and so is more susceptible to damage as you might expect from cheaper third party lenses and it suffers from distortion at the edges.

First i was sceptical buying from the warehouse deal , but i have to say that the product was in perfect shape, no usage marks on it, it is just flawless. The fact that i could buy it with a discount of 400 eur is greatthe lens itself is amazing, i don’t have words to describe it. I am using it on a nikon d7000 previously used with n 17-55 2. It becomes a 36-105 on my dx so with this 2 lens i have all i need.

Pros: it’s fast, accurate and sharp. Cons: it’s heavy and costly. In my case, the cost was forgotten as soon as i saw the quality of my pictures.

Had tried the tamron 24-70 vc, but it suffered terrible back focus issue even although it looked sharp on the viewfinder. This lens is just a beast, since modern fx camera these days can bump the iso up to 3200 without any noticeable noise, the lack of vr even at 70mm would certainly do the job absolutely well even at low lit situation :)sharpness is as good as the primes, no fringing from the photos even when wide open.

Quality and sharpness of this lens is better than any of the primes i’ve used even at f2. Bokeh is of very good quality too. Focus speed is lightning fast even in poor lighting conditions. New vr is out but not sure wether vr will make difference as i’ve never had issues with blurry images with this lens. A bit heavy though especially with my d750.

This is the best universal lens i have ever used with my nikon d700. Perfect for pretty much everything. Portraits, landscape, night pictures, animals, children. The quality of the optics is awesome (better on the wider end). Autofocus is instant but silent.

What can i say about this lens that has not been said vr would be good with it ,i use it with a d800 (now out of date) as with all nikon top lenses they are pricey.

I’ve owned many lenses over the years, from small primes to large 2. This 24-70 stands up to any of them in terms of buid and the image quality it produces. It is heavy for a short zoom, but i like that solidity, i like to know i’m holding a good chunk of glass. And it’s tidy, ergonomically very nice to hold and use. You don’t need vr at these focal lengths, anyone who says you do muct have very shakey hands. You only need to be at a max of 1/80th sec to counter any shake [on fx at least, which is the only place i would recommend using this lens, get the 17-55 for dx]pro-grade, pro-qualit, of course. Pro-price too, but lenses like this hold value, for good reason.

Coming from lesser quality nikon lenses it is pretty amazing even at end print size you see the difference. The lens does suffer from some distortion at the 24 mm end, but using lens profiles in adobe lightroom this is easy to fix. It’s not that noticeable on subjects – just backgrounds. But then any 24mm suffers from this it’s not an issue. An amazing lens and a joy to own and use.

An extremely versatile lens which is usable under all circumstances. I am using it with a d3s body and getting extremely good results from it.

8 professional lens from nikkor (nikon). It’s buildt to outlast you , and almost smells of quality. I have this on my camera 99% of the time, it does a wonderful job. Quick to focus, very good in low light. Only negative aspect is that it is quite heavy and big – my former lens was a 17-55 2. 8 dx (this covers the same range due to the size of the sensor) and it was significantly smaller. If you are an occational photographer it might not be for you, the sixe and price considered. But if you are a serious photographer this is the first lens you shoud get.

Excellent quality, fabulous optics and a complete pleasure to use. Weight and size are perfect. The quality of photos captured must be seen to believe. Glad i bought this and not the cheaper sigma (i like sigma but if you can choke up the money, then this is the best). This has been my standard soon lens since i bought it and just love it. I use it with my full frame nikon d600 and the output is awesome. Steady, excellent optics, great and easy to use. Ever wondered why this has been long standing non replaced number 1 in this type of lenses and range?.

Plus points -excellent image quality (sharp) – excellent smooth bokah possible at long end (noted used this on the d300 and you really need ff to get this)-very useful range day to day good for architecture to general people photography- good flare and ca resistance downsides – v slightly soft corners at 24mm wide open – not for trips to the poles. Gets stiff around zero degrees (seriously hard to zoom when very very cold for a longtime fine again when above 5 degrees) – dust sealing could be better (dust definitely can and does move in with time unless you are super careful with it) maybe should be 4 star but the image quality of this lens and usefulness makes it a 5 for me overall.

8g edi purchased this lens to go with my new d800 – what a combinationthe lens is as sharp as anything under the many varied conditions i have used it under. The combination is a bit on teh heavy side, so be prepared for that.

Very high quality professional lens. Photos are very sharp and good natural colour contrast. Excellent for night photography.

The images from the lens are great, i have been using the lens 90% of the time. However recently i have been hearing a grinding lens between 70 ->50mm, 50 ->24mm is as smooth as it has always been. This is very disappointing for a “professional quality” lens and i would expect it to last for years not months. Amazon have been great in sorting out the problem which is a relief. Update ===========================my replacement lens turned up today, it is smooth and as it originally was; i just hope it lasts over 8 months.

Yes, rather expensive but what a lens for my d800. Crisp, clear, sharp and above all stable lens.

Lots of people talk about the weight as a negative, but i find it a reassuring positive. A sign of a good build and durable enough to take the many bangs in life this lens will no doubt take. Pin sharp throughout the image, when combined with the 70-200 it gives you enough coverage to tackle most assignments. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone.

Beautiful lens, very versatile and has been my walk-around lens for a few years now as well as my main lens for shooting events. I have two small gripes with it: first, there tends to be a slight bit of colour fringing (chromatic aberration) at wide apertures, but that’s going to be familiar to anyone using this lens. Many cameras will automatically correct for this anyway, and i’ve set up my own correction preset in photoshop’s raw image importer so it’s not a big deal. The second is a bit more of a deal though – the lens seems to suffer from quite a lot of flare and ghosting. It’s not anything that has stopped me using it, but it does mean i have to be very careful when i’m framing shots – even candles in a dark room can create ghost flames if you’re not careful. I’ve seen it in other lenses but not to this extent. Comparing it to my other f2. 8 lens (105mm prime), there’s a big difference with respect to the number of reflections, flares and ghosted lights that you see. As i said, it hasn’t stopped me using it as my main lens for years, you just have to be a bit more careful with it than some other lenses.

Your perception of photography will change after using this lens. Fantastic lens, crisp image quality, really good for low light photography.

If you have in your possession a high end dx or a full frame (fx) camera then this lense is a must have item. Ok it costs in the region of £1250 but at the end of the day this is a lense has been designed for the pro’s but at the same time allowing us mere mortal keen amateures to experience picture quality that we may not see otherwise. I won’t bore you with all the technical details of the lense as i’m sure you would look this up for yourself, so all i will say is, i bought this lense to go on my d800, this being full frame i get the maximum benifits from the lense. (but pictures are just as good with dx bodies). When you pick the lense up it quite simply oozes quality, both the other two rings for manual focusing and focal lengh adjustment are smooth and free from any backlash and with no vr function focusing is super fast and as for the quality of the photo;s they are frighteningly good, clear and very sharp (drag some up on net and check them out), this is a serious lense designed to capture your subject at it’s best and this is why i use this as my everyday lense, in fact it very rarely comes off the camera. Initial downsidethe lense is quite heavy at around 900gr and makes the camera feel very heavy to lug around but after about a month you won’t notice it. My conclusiondon’t hesitate and buy it, you’ll soon forget about your lightened bank balance when you see the quality of your pictures.

Tried this lens vs the tameron 24 to 70, i couldn’t get on with this lens primarily due to no vr. Very good quality well-made nice leather case.

This is one serious lens for the serious photographer, heavey, yes, sharp, yes, this is my flagship lens in my kit.

The pictures are very sharp and vivid. It is possible to crop without losing any visible quality. Of course a heavy piece, but you need to be strong to reach the top :-).

It should be noted this is a big, beast of a lens and not far short of a 1kg in weight. So you won’t get this in your jacket pocket. Seriously, for a standard / wide angle zoom is is very big and does take some handling. However, it does feel like the business. The results are impressively crisp and having the f2. 8 capability is really worth the extra size and weight. The zoom ring nearest the camera seems really close, and my hands found themselves changing the focus ring instead to begin with, but you soon get the feel for where everything is. Only thing it lacks is the vr which i have on other lenses and don’t really know why it has been left off this one.

Had the lens just a week and i love it. The speed it focuses compared to my 17-55 f2. The clarity of the image is like nothing i have used before and in low light on my d800 i really dont need a flash any moreas for the weight, what’s up with all these people complaining its heavy?.I suggest you all change your butcheri am really pleased but obviously its early days yet, a cracking lens and i am so glad i have been able to buy it.

Having purchased the nikon d810 camera body i decided that i needed to upgrade my lenses. The first on the list was this 24-70mm lens to fill in a gap. I prefer to purchase prime lenses for the image quality but i was persuaded by a friend that this lens was almost as good as the nikon 24mm prime. I read the lab reviews and decided to go with it. The lens comes well packaged with a quality case. The build quality looks really robust and i have not noticed any of the problems that a few others have commented upon. The lens moves through the zoom like silk and the focus is very rapid and almost silent. The interior looks as clean as a whistle and i cannot find any faults at all with the build. It also has a weatherproof seal, which will be handy for coastal shots. I took the lens out on a photo shoot to see what it could do at all main zoom settings.

I’ve read a lot about this lens, and of course it’s one of nikon’s ‘holy trinity’ of zooms, but i was disappointed in the sharpness, particularly at the wider end. I got this lens to replace my 28mm and 50mm, but to be honest, i miss my 50mm too much. This lens excels at versatility that you don’t get with a prime, but i was hoping for more performance for such a huge chunk of cash.

The focus points were very soft, and not razor sharp as i expected. So it was returned to amazon as it may have been a bad example of the lens.

This is the best 35mm lens i’ve ever owned. It is fairly weighty so carrying around all day can be a chore but it more than rewards your efforts by giving superb results. There is a really sweet spot around f9-11 but even wide open this delivers.

This lens is expensive, but its worth every penny. I use it daily and am still amazed with the sharpness and iq this lens delivers. Af is lightning quick, and virtually always spot on. Bokeh is to die for, built like a tank, simply the best. Only down side is its bulk and weight (with the hood on this is a big lens), but its the price you pay for fast pro glass.

Having used the latest 24-120mm f4 vr lens for a year or so on a d700, i was finding that when i upgraded to d800, the very slight weaknesses in the 24-120 were becoming evident on occasions (big enlargements). Moving to this lens just showed that although it is an older lens and lacks vr (it would be bigger and heavier with it, i guess) the larger aperture definitely allows better view of what you are photographing, and the quality of the glass is simply excellent. It is not a lens you can use so easily as your only travel lens, but it does give the best quality as long as you can hold your camera steady.

If you can afford it, buy it and stop worrying about the weight, how it compares to several prime lenses and it not having vr. I use it on a nikon d700 or d800 using a black rapid strap and the weight just disappears. I admit that the quality might not be as good or as fast as some of the primes, but you make up for this with the convenience of using one lens without too much penalty. 8 can easily fit in your pocket for low light work. I like many others was initially frightened by the cost and weight, but all of that went out of the window when i took my first landscape shot. The handheld result was razor sharp, had great dynamic range and the detail in the far of trees was incredible.

Can zoom lenses really be this good?. This nikon beast sure proves that they can. I could and still cannot fault this marvellous creation. I’ve produced some excellent work under many conditions and this lens took everything in its stride.
