Canon EF 35 mm f/2 IS USM Lens – : Nice lens, good value.
I bought this used canon prime lens from italy, in german amazon warehouse deals on prime day 2016, for a very discounted price. In my first days of use i don’t find any fault or major problems in the product, thumbs up for amazon. Dei use it on a mirrorless eos m3 (another great deal of amazon. De) with canon mount adapter, so the following impressions may not suit all users, especially reflex camera owners. First of all this lens is quite big and gives a sense of a solid product (for reference is big like canon ef 85mm and more heavy than that), imho is not so suitable for a mirrorless camera, visually looks a bit awkward and not well balanced, and a bit intimidating for casual subjects (usually addressing at me with some suspicion: “what’s that cannon??”)i chose to keep it with me for its good quality, but for new buyers i would advise considering the ef 40mm f/2. 8 lens, is a pancake, less fast, lacking stabilization, but its size is more appropriate for a mirrorless camera, is quite sharp and has same level of vignetting. As i just wrote the quality of this 35mm lens is high, besides the solid feeling the sharpness is impressive, the aperture is very convenient for getting luminous pictures, very useful for taking candid family pictures at home keeping isos as low as possible, in an environment there is no possibility to getting a powerful lighting. At full aperture vignetting is quite strong, but already at f/2. 8 it decreases much and becomes a non-trouble. The stabilizer is effective, basically i’m a beginner with little hopes of technical improvement, so i can get stable pictures at 1/15 s with about 50% success rate or less, on the internet you will read that at the same shutter speed is possible getting near 100% ok pictures and you can go up to 1/8 s.
I purchased this lens on the 10th of jan & it was delivered to my door by 12. 00 on the 11th of jan impressed by this. I open the box & noticed the lens was heavier than i thought it was going to be however got used to the lens quite quickly & was able to take photosstraight away with it & was pleased with the results that i got.
This is an excellent little walkabout lens, ideal for discreet street photography and full-length portraiture. The original 35mm f/2 (non-is) had a reputation as being a bit iffy with build quality, slow focusing (it had no usm), so a replacement has been a long time coming. I’m pleased to say this new f/2 is vastly superior to the old version. Image quality itself is a notable improvement, the inclusion of is is a nice addition, and the build quality and focusing are both massively improved. Sharpness is good across the range, even at f/2 (the old version was virtually unusable at f/2). When this lens first came out, it was around £700. At that price, it was too expensive, especially given the 35mm f/1. 4 l can be had for under £1000. But now the f/2 is less than £400, it’s a much more sensible proposition. Probably not, but it’s a great deal closer than one might think, and it’s less than half the price.
Everything you may have read about this lens is true; it is capable of taking the most amazing photographs. Yes, it is very expensive – but it’s worth it:i do not find it easy to use, wide-open it can be difficult to get the focus where you want it, so the “keeper” ratio isn’t great; but with digital photography, that is no longer a big issue. But, the lens has great colours and contrast, and of course the big max aperture lets you take photos where you’d never bother even trying before; i hate flash and i hardly ever use it with this lens; it seems almost an insult to do so. 4 can give your pictures a dreamy almost cinematic look. My copy seems to sharpen up a bit at f1. 4 i’ve got some some fantastic pictures. And i don’t miss having a zoom at all, you just get used to having to walk around more; i need the exercise anyway. I’ve been “bitten” by the prime bug and now also have a 135mm f2.
4 to fund it and don’t regret it for a second. Sharpness, colour, versatility all first rate.
I’m always pretty skeptical as to the ‘performance’ of lenses, especially the expensive ones; after all, it’s you who has to perform to get the shot – as long as the lens isn’t screwing it up, then all is well. In spite of this i have found that not only does the canon 35mm 1. 4 not get in the way, it’s actually really adding to pictures in terms of colour and contrast. The one (very common with canon primes) detraction is that it’s not brilliant wide open – in this case just very good. The auto focus is lightning quick and near silent to all but casual movie recording, in which case it becomes the loudest sound in the universe. I really can’t say this lens is lacking anything except maybe weather sealing. In the worst case, even if this lens doesn’t jump out of the box, attach itself to your camera, and drag you to scenes of untold colour and composition (as lenses don’t), everything you use afterwards will suddenly, seemingly, have a high standard to live up to. A great lens at a great expense, but better to have one lens that serves without complaint, than three that hunt and struggle. It’s an investment, just like all l lenses.
I borrowed this lens for a wedding last year and the results were so stunning that i knew i had to buy one, even my wife agreed for a changeso buy one i did and i couldn’t be happier. I find it to be really sharp, even wide open at f/1. 4 it is sharp but you need to be spot on with your focusing. Colour rendition, bokeh and all that jazz are beautiful and the af motor is speedy enough too. This is now my 5dii’s permanent partner.
Great bit of kit, sharp as at 2. Used for group shots at weddings.
- Much better than the previous version
- Excellent lens
- Nice lens, good value.

Nice lens very sharp works great on my canon 7d mark 2 gives me about 56 mm have tryed it out in many situations very pleased with it.
Like many others i was wanting a prime that was a bit wider than 50mm. 4 l until i read a few reviews of this lens and decided it would better suit my needs – i wanted a smaller lens for street photography. Overall i’d say i’m very happy with this lens, it’s light, has fast auto focus and is very sharp. A lot of reviewers are surprised that it’s not an l lens given the image quality and i’d go with that as it’s easily a match for my l lenses. 4 aperture i’d save some money and go with this lens over the l. Yes the bokeh isn’t as good as the 1. 4, but if that’s what you are after then use a fast telephoto lens instead as it will give you better results.
My favorite canon lens and i have many l series and zeiss lenses. Sharp, fast and accurate focussing with wonderful colour.
Pros-razer sharp so you’ll have no problem cropping if needed. This is good for any ’50mm on cropped sensor,’ user that wants a bit more freedom, it’s not as bright as a those fast 50mm but with the added image stabilisation this will give you sharper shots and you won’t have to keep taking steps backwards to get everything in frame. It’s also not that much bigger than my canon 50mm f1. Feels very balanced on my 80d. The angle of view on a cropped sensor is a nice 56mm (after considering the 1. This i have to say i love as it’s very close to a true 50mm that you’d get on a full frame sensor and in my opinion as close to what the human eye sees as you’ll get. It’s a great walk around lens, perfect for street/travel and festival/candid portrait photography on the fly which i love. Also it has a very short, ‘close focusing distance,’ which is very handy.
I think it’s great canon have started to do some more is prime lenses, much needed imo. When this first came out i was put off with the rather high price of near £800 just too much for a 35mm f2 lens, but with recent price drops (to more sensible levels) i decided to give it a bash. I tested the lens on my 70d and borrowed a 5dmkii to get a feel how the lens performs on a full frame body. Kicking off with my quick fire pros and cons list:pros:+ very good build quality, decent plastics (dense and solid) used on the body with a metal mount+ fast and quiet af the usm ring motor is very quick to focus with full time manual focus available+ very sharp right off the bat at f2 even on a ff body superb in the central area and very good across the frame+ only very slight barrel distortion well controlled for a 35mm focal length+ minimal ca present i had to hunt to find very minor fringing it’s not a concern at all+ nice and smooth blur/bokeh (8 blades circular aperture). Very nice at f2, some very minor ‘onion rings’ at about f4 or so mostly good here+ lens does not extend with focus and filter does not rotate+ is works well around 3 stops or so (based on my real world use)+ max mag of 1:4. 2 is pretty good for a 35mm prime (you can get close enough for non macro work)cons:- quite a bit of vignetting on a full frame body at f2 (you’ll certainly notice is) not unusual for a prime, improves stopping down just one stop quite a lot (ie no longer likely to bother you) some folks don’t mind fall off for artistic reasons. Easy to correct in software so no show stopper- 67mm filter isn’t a common size but they’re not that expensie either- no hood includedi’m really pleased with the lens it’s very sharp at all apertures with very nice rendering. This can be a tricky choice as the non is 35mm f2 is also around for a few hundred less, i went with the is as i do quite a lot of lower light shooting but consider your options here too. F2 is fairly fast, but there are faster 35mm lenses around. I’m trying to get hold of a sigma 35mm f1.
I desperately wanted a 50mm lens as i love this focal length but having tried canon’s main offerings (the 1. 4) i was bitterly disappointed with both. 4 is too soft (wide open) for professional work and the 1. 2 simply isn’t worth the price tag for the small improvement over the 1. I may have had a bad copy but at £1k+ it’s got to be flawless and i don’t expect to even have to use the term ‘bad copy’. I therefore settled on the 35mm and wow am i happy i did. 4 and the focal length is perfect for my style of photography. And if i want 50mm (or there abouts) i just stick it on the 7d. One of the most important lenses in my kit bag, quite simply stunning. If you shoot at this sort of focal length and need a super fast lens there is nothing better. Buy it, you won’t be disappointed.
Terrific lens; had been coveting it for years and price finally came down enough to be affordable. Takes getting used to, after years of zoom lenses; requires mastering manual exposure but a lot of fun to learn and the results are outstanding.
Shame, it’s a nice lens but is rather slow in low light, missed a beautiful image opportunity or two. Nether the less a great price and a useful addition to my gadget bag.

This is a canon prime lens, and as expected the quality and sharpness are impossible to criticise at amateur level of use and viewed on a 27inch imac. For comparison my previous experience includes the canon 50mm f1. 4 and the excellent 70-200mm f2. This new 35mm lens is visibly sharper, with better colour rendition and better contrast than either of them. I had a difficult time choosing between this lens and the old 35mm (not is and less than half the price) and the pro 35mm l series (is, metal construction, water tight, bigger and heavier and half as much money again). Some websites criticised this lens for its plastic construction, but then it is cheaper and lighter than the pro lens, and for me it feels very well made and durable. Camera shake spoiling pictures is an ongoing battle for me, however hard i work on cameral technique, so for me the is seemed to be the clincher in the decision. It does seem to work, and buys at least one or two stops of extra sharness. Three or four might be a bit of an exageration.
The main reason to buy this is speed and hand holding for static subjects at a fifth of a second, if its image quality at higher f stops then an l zoom will do as good a job, i bought this as a fast standard thus giving me pseudo super fast f stops in practical terms as my subjects are static, its hitting bargain prices now as it was nearly twice the current price but most people would be better with an l zoom , 24 to 105 would be my choice unless the fixed focal length and effective super speed is your priority.
I most take landscape and cityscape photos; and lightroom shows my goto lens is the 16-35mm f2. I spent an age deciding between 3 35mm’s wanting something a little sharper at times than the l zoom. I ended up getting a 35mm f2 is usm (as well as an 8-15mm fisheye – i have a problem. ) the prime 35mm f2 side by side with the 2. 8l is noticeably sharper especially at lower apertures and has less vignetting. Canon is as sharp as i would want it to be and the color is mostly excellent i bought the f2 over the 1. 4 as i wanted the is – there are times when i am out shooting landscapes or cities that i want to be able to shoot video and the is that this lens offers is a big benefit for anyone shooting slr video. This was my second non l lenses and they are for the types of photography i don’t normally do – a 50mm f1. 4 for the odd portrait and street photography day and now this.
I am not a pro photographer but i take a keen interest as an amateur, i am always out and about with my camera and i have to say – this is a staggeringly good lens, and easily worth every penny. The quality and sharpness of the image, the definition, the brilliance of the colours, the build quality – top, top notch.
Quite impressed with this one. Build quality is typical of canon ef i. Very good, and value for money is now also good as this lens costs around half its original price thanks to stiff competition. Not quite as fast at f2 as sigma’s latest f1. 4 offering but you do get is, along with consistent and reliable autofocus neither of which comes with the sigma art version. I shall be keeping this lens.
Super sharp lens – perfect for my 70d – now it never comes off my camera. Build quality is good as well. I’ve now moved away from zooms lens and more towards good quality primes like this lens.
So i finally upgraded my old school ef 35 f/2 for this new is usm model. I’d read reviews from all the sources i trust and thought i knew what to expect: good edge to edge sharpness even wide open, a great is implementation, good flare / ca characteristics, low distortion, great color & contrast and pleasing bokeh given the focal length. I found the lens delivered on all those points except for having just a touch more barrel distortion than i was expecting. It’s not bad by any means, but most reviews seemed to suggest that distortion would be negligible, whereas there’s enough that i’d want to correct it most of the time. Not a big deal, but i mention it here for completeness. Another thing that i wasn’t expecting from the reviews was just how good the af performance would be. I mean, i knew it would be better than my old buzzy ef35, but i wasn’t expecting such a dramatic improvement. On my 5diii particularly it’s very sure-footed, superbly accurate, consistent and really fast, even in poor artifical light. To be fair this is the first of the ‘new wave’ of upgraded canon lenses that i’ve purchased, and at only 35mm the motor doesn’t have a lot of glass to move, but still the difference between this lens and my older design canon lenses (even the ls) is not subtle. In my book it’s one of the best value lenses in canon’s line-up.
I much prefer the look of this lens to the new canon 35mm 1. There’s something about the images it produces which are reminiscent of the old analogue days. I don’t care much for 100% zoom sharpness tests or quibbling over 0.
Ive had this lens for about 18 months and its one of my sharpest lenses, only beaten by the 135 and 200 mm l primes, which gives you an idea of how sharp it can be (it’s a bit trickier to use in fairness, due to the dim light i’m often using it in)great colour rendition and contrast. Makes a great walking around lens at parties, so highly recommended for wedding photogs shooting small groups. My only reservation is the price, which is a bit on the stupid side.

Lens arrived on time but it came without a canon pouch which was strange and overall disappointing for the money paid.
Very good lens – highly recommend it.
Outstanding lens at a fraction of the price of the l-series. If you’re looking for a fixed lens but don’t want to shell out over a grand, then you can’t go far wrong with this beauty.
Great lens – clear pictures with great bokeh. Used for video and the is is great in this lens.
Most used lens on a 6d, lightweight and sharp pictures, only used at f2, very sharp, is claims 4 stops which is rarely true but 2 stops help at least, it comes with a hood, bag and center pinch cap. The is doesnt have configurable options like more expensive lenses but it is a smart one, if the lens senses that that u are moving the camera only horizontally so u are panning, following an object or person (walker, runner, bicyclist) that it will not compensate for horizontal movement but vertical only, it can very quickly recognize that u are pannig and when u stop doing so it goes back to full stabilizing right away. Dont bother that vignetting is very noticeable, with 6d you can add its profile with the canon sofware so jpg are corrected in camera and raw pictures can be fixed later on computer easily. Unless the the gear earns u money but this over the 35mmf1. 4, that is bigger heavier, very expensive and it could be a pain at 1. This f2 btw has very shallow dof when the subject is close to u, like 1m or less, the small min focus distance is a real joy the play with, u can go very close to objects.
The image quality is superb. I haven’t taken this lens off of my camera since purchase despite owning several l series lenses.
Extremely sharp, great handling and the is is brilliant and enables you to work without tripod in low light. Excellent as a standard lens for a 5d and also with a 1d.

First of all, this is an excellent lens and now it is only £379, it’s a perfect price. This lens is one of the sharpest lenses canon offers and is possibly the best value lens you can buy (including the 50mm 1. The lens hood for this lens is not included and is a separate purchase at around £50.
I’m really happy with this lens. It gives lovely bokeh, and the f2 is really excellent. I’ve used it both in the studio and outside in natural light, and i’m super happy with it. I’d definitely recommend buying this if you’re a portrait photographer.
