TAMRON SP AF 70-200mm F/2 – Great no-frills lens.

Good for getting close ups and quite sharp. Have been using it for bird watching and as i am an amateur have been impressed with the results. It is a bit heavy but got to expect that with a larger lens.

Happy with the color and bokeh. If your like me shooting as a hobby then buy this one. Having this lens for 2 year, i loved using this and it is my primary lens on my camera.

8 works perfect from 70 – 135mm. Overall excellent sharp images.

Very good quality compared to the price. A bit heavy for handhold photos.

Amazing fast service and product excellence; what more could i ask?. I am absolutely thrilled with this lens~everything i wanted and more. I was a little tentative about buying a used lens as it was my first time ever doing so. That said it will certainly not be the last time. The savings and the value that made this lens affordable will help me broaden my photographic horizons.

Great lens, heavy but i expected that, image quality is superb, no ca visible i would say its as good as more expansive lenses.

Got this lens promptly from amazon and at a keen price and i love it. This lens is very much as described – big and with some weight. The weight is not a problem for me but this must be distinguished from a pure consumer and lighter lens like for example, tamron 70-300mm f/4-5. 6 which is also a good performing lens. I chose this version over the more recent tamron 70-200mm f2. 8 version which is heavier and reportedly has* faster focus with its hyper sonic motor – well, my version has excellent auto focus and i have read too many reports of failure in lenses with such motors and so i prefer to do without;* optical stabilisation [os – i already have os in the camera body so no need for that. This lens which i consider to be robust in build terms, delivers excellent image quality and has the magical f/2. 8 aperture for isolating the subject matter from the background. Although not advertised in the amazon web page, this lens comes with a 5 year european warranty. I do not think you can go wrong with this excellent lens that amazon delivered the next day. ]

Awesome lens, sharp from wide open even at both extremes of the zoom range. At least around the center, i didn’t check the corners.

Won’t go into details about this great (big) lens, others have done a sterling job on that front. Just wanted capture my experience regards focus accuracy. Love the versatility of this lens, although i found i had to adjust the focus for this lens within my pentax k5’s menu. I found the images slightly out of focus at the 70 mm end, so i bumped the focus adjustment on my pentax to maximum +’ve to get it acceptably sharp. Interestingly this did not appear to have a negative impact on the 200 mm end. Interestingly i found i had to do the same with my sigma 28-70 mm f2.

Tried this out for the first time on monday and am very impressed. Sharp clear photos even when hand held. Focus can be a little slow at times but that could be me as i am still learning.

As an hd video alternative to the lovely canon f2. 8 l series alternative, this represents superb value. Sure, the canon is even better built (though this is a solid chunk) and has a nice red ring round the front so everyone knows how wealthy you aren’t, but if you don’t need the image stabilised (is) version and just want a fast, long zoom it’s a great lens with super optics for the price. I can’t do an a-b comparison of the equivalent canon, but using it manually i’d say there’s not much to choose between them. If you’re a stills photographer, maybe pay the extra for canon’s snappy, super-quick, near silent af but if you’re strapping on a follow focus ring and using it for video, go tamron. I only wish they made an equivalent 24-70mm f 2.

Used it in anger at a corporate photo shoot and took very nice people shots even wide open with flash.

I love taking photos and find this lens great product at a great priceeveryone seems to think you must get the most expensive of gear but i have achieved perfect, sharp photos in low light environments.

Absolutely stunning – i use it with a 40d and a 50d – not missing is, or the extra price. – very clever piece of kit, hand-held without the mono-pod – has transformed my photography.

Good clarity, every bit as good as the canon version but at a lower price. I have other tamron lenses and i rate them all. Construction is solid and robust and performance excellent.

This is my ‘go to’ lens for my nikon d5300. It’s great for portraits, sports and landscape photography. It’s taken a terrible beating over the last 2 years and is only just showing signs of wear as the auto focus is taking a few seconds do do what it’s supposed to. Not a bad thing really as that’s something i rarely use.

Everything i had read or heard about this lens was true, it has in some tests and reviews been compared to marque lenses costing twice as much but equaling their quality , in the short time i have used my lens with a pentax k5 it has certainly lived up to my expectations, this really is a quality piece of glass and there lies the only drawback it is quite heavy but that is all the quality glass within. This is not a deal breaker but something to be aware of as walking around for a couple of hours with it you know you have done it, would i recommend this lens, hell yes but just be aware of the weight other than that i would give it 10 out 10.

Excellent lens for the price i paid, but out dated now.

Great value for a amateur user. The lense is well built but heavy and you would require a large camera bag to keep it in, but you do get a padded bag to keep it in if you dont. The picture quality as a jump from a zoom 18-250 is really good and i look forward to using it on landscape and outdoor sports.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Very soft on 200mm on f2.8

  • Amazing lens at an amazing price!

  • Very happy with this lens

I would probaby have given the lens 4. 5/5 if available but chose 5 because i didn’t want to under value it. I can’t compare it to the equivalent nikon or sigma because i haven’t used them. That it is considerably cheaper is a matter of fact but really shouldn’t be a factor in the review because all photographers want to know is if it is sharp, fast, etc. In good light i can shoot at apertures of f5. 6 at 1/8000s (with a nikon d7100). 8 but i think even better at f4. In less good light conditions you will need to up the iso, 400 is usually enough to keep the shutter speed high. One bonus i didn’t really expect is that at wide apertures, you do get some lovely bokeh. For me the lens works best for portraits & for close ups of insects, flowers, etc. The reason i would have given it 4. 5 is that in poor light focussing is sometimes a little slow, so for wildlife & sport it might not be the lens you would choose. The lens is heavy but i expect that is usual for these lenses.

I have hardly removed this lens from my camera.

Top quality lens at a reasonable price i could not justify nikon prices but this is spot on and you would be hard pushed to tell the difference in picture quality.

After my previous one was accidentally knocked out of my hand by a staggering drunkard at a gig, i was offered the same lens by my insurance company and was i thrilled?. This is without a doubt the best lens in my collection. I use it for gigs, landscapes, close ups of insects and much more, despite owning a brilliant tamron 90 macro lens. It is incredibly sharp, with practically no distortion when wide open at f2. Having become used to the push-me-pull-me eccentricity of switching from manual to autofocus, i now prefer this method. I can photograph people unposed, acting naturally (we all know how hard it is to pose children) and get brilliant close up, ‘bokeh’ portraits. Oh, and if you want to photograph sports, then again this is a great lens for you.

I bought this lens about 2 years ago, second hand to use on my sony a77. It becomes a 35mm equivalent of 105 to 300mm on the apsc a77. Once i had spent some time setting up the micro focus, i found the results excellent. 8 and really sharp stopped down. The colours are great or at least similar to the sony sal1650 that is also a really good lens, besides the jpg colour can be tweaked in camera or in post if raws have been taken. The focus speed is fine in good light since it only needs to adjust to the new position of the focus subject ant it does that very quickly. In low light it can hunt but that’s when a switch to manual and focus peeking saves the day. I have found that it can get heavy when used for weddings towards the end of the day and camera shake starts to creep in. Plonking it on a mono-pod with the attached collar solves that problem.

Perfect alternative to the pricier nikkor.

This is a dated design with slow auto focus but the images are tact sharp wide open. Yes good optics and fit for purpose at a low amazon price to boot.

I absolutely love this lens and its fast becoming my go to lens for my wildlife photography. I use a sony a77ii and having started out 12 months ago have a limited budget. I searched some online reviews and this lens came recommended for my camera. There is a newer version of this lens which retails for £900 but this older version goes for around £475. I haven’t tried the newer version but having brought this lens am unlikely to spend any more upgrading it. It may not be the fastest auto-focusing lens on the market (i have not tried it against the newer version so wouldn’t be able to tell any difference), and on the rare occasion in low light can auto-focus can hunt a little bit, but it really always is about the end results. I am relatively new to photography and wouldn’t presume to give any advice around bokeh, lens quality etc. However i used this lens at a birds of prey photography experience and have attached some of the images. They do say a picture paints a thousand words.

I’ve bought this as the best option for high image quality in the up to 200mm f2. 8 zoom lens region on my pentax k-30 without spending over £500 or so. The pentax 60-250 f4 would match it optically but it’s not as bright and costs over twice as much but does have quiet af whereas the tamron is body driven screw drive old school af. 8 isn’t in the same class optically by all accounts so i never considered it, it’s also much more expensive. Pentax cameras from the k-7 on are quite fast with most screw drive lenses though, they have torquey motors and this made this tamron a viable option on the k-30 (in theory anyway). Testing the lens, it meets all my expectations for image quality. I found a little body af adjustment made it even better as it was slightly front focusing at f2. 8 – it’s as sharp as zooms ever come – as good as most primes in fact throughout all of the 70-200 range. F4 seems to be a bit sharper than f2.

Husband over the moon even if it was a lot of money.

I am lucky enough to have two dslr’s canon 40d and pentax k30, to buy the equivalent lens for the canon would have cost me 4times as much. Is is in camera with the pentax so i don’t have to pay for it in the lens , i have tried the canon 70-200 2. 8 is ,great lens, this tamron matches it in most respects, colour, sharpness and bg blur, not as quick to lock on but for £1200. Feels good in the hand not too heavy, if you have a camera with built in is get this lens.

You only get what you pay for, and this little gem is worth every penny. A bit on the heavy side, but i can get used to that, and the focusing ring and zoom are reversed, easily remembered after a few outings. Found the lens hood in the bottom of the black lens carrier after trolling the web for an hour. Other manufacturers please take note – if a customers buys a lens it’s a fairly safe bet they are going to need the lens hood too. Why don’t you just include it in the box with the lens like tamron do. Simples, and well done tamron.

Used this in the studio a couple times now before writing a review. The optics of this is amazing. Noisey focus but i can live with that as the performance and level of detail is excellent.

Lots of positive things to say about this lenses. I bought it in doubt as some reviews were not quite positive but after 2 years and 4 months of heavy usage i recommend this lenses as a must have for those who like outdoors and sport activities. The only recommendation i will do is to try to keep it in manual at sporting events as it may a be a bit slow to focus when you need for quick action.

This lens is a must for close up work and distance. The quality and finishing are of a high standard, and value for money. Recommend it to people who require a good lens.
