Sigma 150-600mm F5-6, Outstanding lens.

For a good price, you will have several lenses in to one. But after using it nearly blows the 300mm f2. 8 mkii from canon out of the water. When light is poor the lens get slightly slower. Image quality, even after blow ups, absolutely amazing. Aperture starting at f5 might be doubt full, but i suggest to rent one and try it. And you will see what i mean. I’m seriously thinking to sell my 300mm and 400mm. Already 6 other professional photographer i know switched to this lens. Make sure it is the sports one and not the slower contemporary one.
Heavy but for the reach and build quality i’m not disappointed.
Had to return as large speck of manufacturing dust inside the lens. It is also a heavy lens and i would not expect to be handholding it for long.
An affordable solution for wildlife especially bird photography. As i will be travelling all over europe over the next few years i am confident that the sport lens will stand up to the rigours of summer and winter.
In the short period of time i have had this lense it has impressed me as quite simply the best long focus lense i have ever owned. Once i learned how to use it properly that is. I am recovering from cancer treatment and the lense is, for me, very heavy so a tripod is essential. I also use a wireless shutter release. Be prepared to adjust iso settings to keep to an aperture of around f11 for depth of field. I photograph wildlife as hobby and ensuring a sharp duck in the middle of a pond while set to f5 is beyond me at the moment. To sum up a fantastic lense, if in doubt, treat yourself.
I take a lot of wildlife photographs, mainly birds. This lens gives you the extra reach and importantly the image quality is superb. Yes it is on the heavy side but in real terms it is worth it. The construction is superb, built like a tank in truth, but i fully expect to have this lens for many years to come. I would recommend that you consider purchasing a gimbal to attach to your tripod or monopod as this will significantly help with prolonged use and it will also help with image quality.
Excellent quality, a good buy but heavy, recommended.

“you can do this on your own camera but the docking station gives a far better accuracy. I cannot fault this lens

Absolutely superb lens for the money. Ok, it’s not fast, but it’s more than sharp enough for most people. I’ve used it for concerts, air shows and news, and been delighted with it.
The best alrounder hight zoom lense iv come across. Been looking to get a powerful zoom lense for over a year, and have been looking at several including nikon 200-400mm tamron 150-600mm and sigma 150-600mm contemporary. But i decided it’s worth the extra money to just go with the sigma sports version for all the extra added features you get with it, and haven’t looked back.
Amazing lens quality for the range at the price but will say this is a very heavy lens make sure your arms are strong.
Shooting for a glossy magazine and as a photo journalist (nuj) i use this a lot along with a nikkor 70-200 f2. 8 for most of my shotsi was among the first of 10 in the uk to have this lens. The quality is uncompromising, it is best used on a gimbal i prefer a wimberley on a gitzo but i also shoot hand held. Almsot every image i have shot for classic cars magazine was this lens (99%).
Delighted with the lens fantastic delivery time. No hassle whatsoever well worth the few bob.
The best tele-zoom on the market. Incerdible sharpness and os (optical stabilization system) which allows handheld shooting with such a long focal lenght. I’m using it with sigma sd1 merrill and the results are stunning.
Very heavy but very good so far. I can’t wait to get out and about for more wildlife photography.

Met all my expectations having had tamron 150-600. Very sharp -quick auto focus. Be prepared for extra weight if hand holding.
I take wildlife pictures, mostly birds, and my cameras are canon. I went with several telephoto lenses before going to my first 150-600. So 55-250, 70-200, 300 f4 is, 400 f5. 6, 100-400 ii, sigma 150-600 contemporary were my previous lenses. I was always looking for more reach, and more flexibility, trying not to loose quality in the process. About a year ago i’ve got my sigma 150-600 sport (bought it here in amazon uk), and i think it has all that i was needing for the price i was willing to pay. Of course a 500 or 600 f4 can be better, or even the 200-400. But that is a cost i cannot pay, specially if i can get pictures that can be sell and published with the sigma. As always, there are some tradeoffs. The weight is one of them, and the aperture is another.
The lens is the best ‘third party ‘ answer to reaching long wildlife focal lengths without utilizing image damaging extenders. I use canon primes for all my wedding and wildlife work and also high quality l-series zooms and primes. My wildlife kit consists of 70-200f2. 8 l 300 f4 l is and this the sigma150-600 sport. It hasn’t let me down even when being rained and snowed upon in freezing conditions or baked in the summer sun. I photograph peregrine falcons and hobby amongst other birds of prey and although reassuringly heavy it is built very professionally and coupled with the usb dock can be tailoured to your needs. I use it on or off a triod and handheld it can hunt a little under low light but so does my canon 300 f2. Its tough smart looking and big and has served me well over the last 3 years.
The lense i use with the canon mkiii, for sports photograph at gymnastics and trampoline events. What a difference in the quality of the pictures i now take. The lense is easy to use and the old adage applies ‘it does what it says on the instructions’ well worth the money.
This lens is a first class piece of equipment, it is heavy but not as heavy as people say. Make sure you have the usb docking station as the lens does require some micro adjustment for front and back focusing, you can do this on your own camera but the docking station gives a far better accuracy. I cannot fault this lens, the zoom ring is a little tight but i would rather have it like this as being too slack. The focus speed is as good as any 2. 8 prime lens however, please remember that this not a 7-10 thousand pound/dollar lens but it does match many aspects that you would expect of such lenses. Would i recommend this zoom lens?. – yes i would and furthermore, sigma currently have upped their game and are now setting design quality to match and better their main two big counterparts of nikon and canon. I now have to rate sigma art, contemporary and sports lenses as being as good as and in many ways better than the two main companies named. (images provided by me are on a canon 7d mark 2 plus sigma 150 – 600 mm sports (after usb docking adjustments) and on a tripod with gimbal).
It is heavy so bought a good monopod to support it. I have it working with a mc11 adapter on my sony a6300 and it is superb.

Video reviewi bought this lens and find it very sharp i then decided to make many videos on all off the sigma 150-600 and tamron 150-600 lenses and compared them with each other. After using this combo for some time now often in borderline/critical light situations ( birds and nature, autumn low light, low cloud, grey in grey, rainy etc) i am impressed by all elements involved. The nikon d7500 really is a powerful and affordable low light cam and delivers an outstanding overall performance in combination with the sigma package ( and also the nikkor 80-200mm 2. The sigma lens has no issues with the d7500, focus without the tc-1401 is very fast and reliable ( result of full speed 7fs with adjustments to nikon d7500 overall to max. Performance for high speed is really surprising: 5-6 pics are always perfectly focussed and balanced – for me a superb result compared to my previous ‘’quotas’’). With the tc 1401 it still all works perfectly with the nikon d7500, focus works on all levels ( yes, also around f9 and higher – and at very high iso’s) and you do get a ‘’reach’’ like that of an a 1250mm lens. – just a little bit slower but still allowing for up to 3 fps with similarly good results. Sigma is max 600mm & tc1401 =840mm f6, plus nikon d7500 (aps-c= sensor size hands you an angle of view of 1.
This lense is great for taking wildlife shots and the detail in taking pictures of the moon is fantastic. An exceptional piece of equipment for those into wildlife photography and the clarity of the images is amazing. Really worth spending the money on this lense.
Superb build and optical quality. Canon and nikon could learn a few things from sigmas new lens range. I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, but i’m pretty impressed so far. It replaces a canon 100-400mm l series zoom, which was a fantastic lens, but i wanted that extra reach without the need for an extender. The sigma is a heavy lens, which a number of people have criticized, but how heavy and more to the point, more costly would a 600mm canon or nikon lens be?i’ve taken successful hand-held shots of birds at 600mm and 1/250th, so the optical stabilisation works well. I’ve attached a few shots below. The running sanderling was hand held at 1/500th at 600mm. The goldfinch was hand held at 1/250th at 600mm and the goldeneye was 1/1000th at 600mm using a bean bag. The main image is how it looked through the viewfinder and the larger image is the central section blown up to show the image quality.
I got this lens a couple of months ago as an update to the sigma 150-500 because i needed a little bit extra reach. As a direct comparison, there isn’t much difference between these lenses if you compare the centre area of images shot with good light; but once you look towards the edges or shoot in reduced light there is a definite improvement with the 150-600. Works fine on a tripod and the os does make hand held shots possible, providing you are sensible about shutter speed. Af is rather slow which can mean missing some birds in flight etc; but that is a problem with all similar lenses and adjusting the camera settings does make a considerable difference. Depth of focus can be rather shallow (often less than 3 ft) at reasonably close distances , such as average bird shots, even when using f8 but, once again, you are going to get similar results with alternative lenses. I have also taken some acceptable long distance landscapes. Whether it is worth spending extra for the sport version will depend on individual use. Yes it is a lot heavier but the build is stronger and i thought that when using such a long lens it was likely to get a few accidental knocks. The improved weather sealing is also worth considering if you are likely to be caught out in the occasional shower; or use in a dusty environment.
Very impressed with the build quality. I have the sports version which is damned heavy. Worked well straight out of the box. More than i would normally pay for a lens but feels worth it and built to last.
To be honest i don’t know what this other reviewer is on about. I’ve tested this lens at most focal lengths from 150-600 on both my canon 5d mark iii & my 7d & i find it to be a fantastic lens sharp and fast to lock on. 4x tc-1401 teleconverter fitted to the 5d i’m getting sharp images. Due to the weight of the lens a bean bag or gimbal is needed for support for sharp images at the 600mm end unless shooting at over 500th of a second. The image stabilisation does work very well hand held and its also very quiet. I was not a sigma fan until i was converted by the sigma 105mm macro lens i got last year. But i can say that i am now, due to the optical quality of this lens and the 105. Both very well built, fast & sharp .

I don’t usually write reviews, but are doing so to hopefully be of some ‘help’ to those contemplating purchasing this lense?. Because there are ‘some’ quite varied reviews and comments i have foundi am a long time canon user, who has slowly replaced all my ‘student days’, ‘cheaper’ equipment, and invested in quality glass and accessories and this is my first ‘sigma’ and true long lense ever . I have aspired after a ‘genuine long lense’ for many years (when the common-place 300 mm, just simply isn’t enough. )my main intent is to use it for bird/wildlife photography, from hide type or fairly static – stalking type situations. And the odd sporting situations, where family are involved. I was first put onto this lense by ‘photo plus – the canon magzine’, (which i gather are independent of canon themselves?- and therefore in theory?, not biased) in 2016, when they thoroughly reviewed ‘zoom lenses’. And they awarded this ‘first place. After that, i took a closer interest in this lense. And lets be honest about this, for me, ‘price’ played a significant part. I wanted quality, sharpness, a long reach and longeviety.
This is with out doubt a great lens, its image quality has been amazing, and that despite the fact that i bought it in november so the first 6 months use were always in low light. It is heavy but it is possible to hand hold with some amazing results, i would advise using a tripod though,i have always used canon l lenses up til now and i have to say this compare favourable with them and i would say that it is as good as many of the canon l range that are thousands of pounds. This is now my go to lens and more often than not it is the only lens i take out of my kit bag. Actually the last 3 time i went out to photography wildlife i left my camera bag in the boot of my car and just took this lens.
