Pentax SMC PENTAX-da 50mmF1 : Awesome Lens for the price!!!

Note when using with lens adapter you may need to hold open the aperture switch near the mounting bracket. I used a price of cardboard.
Brilliant addition to your kit. Made portraits look much better with the massive aperture giving a very shallow depth of field. Works seamlessly with my kr. Love this lens and typically use this rather than the kit zoom lens.
This is a must have lens with a excellent image reproduction and quick focusing. 4 al lens on my pentax k3ii.
Excellent prime lens , very good sharpness and bokeh.
I love it, its a standard lens for dslrs, equivalent to 50mm. Versatile, useful for a variety of themes, snapshots, landscape or portrait. It is specially designed to offer a compact and lightweight design, weighing only 124g. Good things: its price, its image quality, its light weight and its size. It is said that it is a remanufacturing of the fa 35mm f2. Very good defición and contrast, few chromatic aberrations at maximum opening. Special coating (sp) to repel dust, fingerprints, grease.
The aperture, weight and lens quality make this a lens i take everywhere. Even if i use a different lens for a particular purpose, there are so many time that i swap to this lens for its brightness and clarity.

- Make sure this fits
by entering your model number. - In-camera shake reduction (SR): the Pentax Digital SLR K Series cameras are equipped with the SR mechanism built into the camera body. Because shake reduction is applied in the camera body, this means that any lens compatible with the K-Series cameras will benefit from image stabilization
- Ideal as a first lens: enabling unique imaging that is only possible with fixed focal point lenses, namely, large blurring of the background and sharp resolution to the edges of the image
- Beautiful bokeh effect: you can S easily enjoy shooting of portraits, snapshots, and other situations
- Portraits: for shooting portraits with contrasting sharpness, We recommend the da 50mm F1.8. It is brighter than the kit lens and beautifully blurs the background so you can shoot images that focus attention on The person
- Round iris diaphragm: with round iris diaphragms, the light sources appear to be enveloped in soft, rounded light when they are captured
- F1.8 for high brightness: This enables easy visibility with the viewfinder and shooting at high shutter speeds even in dim locations for reducing the adverse effects of hand shaking
- Super protect coating: pentax-original SP coating by fluorine coating is used on the front surface of the lens. Prevents Adhesion of dust, water drops, grease and other substances
- Compact, lightweight design: weighing about 122G and having a total length of only 38.5mm (1.5in). it makes it easy to carry around
- Minimum focusing distance: enables minimum shooting distance of 0.45m (1.47 ft.) and a maximum magnification of 0.15x
- What’s in the box: includes front lens Cap 52mm & rear caps
Takes really great photos with my k200d. I like to use it as a walk around lens, doesn’t take as impressive pictures as my 50mm f1. 4 but given the price i really can’t complain. I still get beautiful pictures especiallyin tighter spaces than i would with my 50mm.
Bought the lens as a replacement, thought that for once i would read the instruction book, but it is in french, not sure about how long the warranty is because the guarantee card is not stamped by the dealer, but i love the lens, of course, it is a basic part of any kit and will be fast enough for my need.
I got this lens for free as part of a pentax promotion so i am more than happy with the results especially great in low light. It’s a great budget lens that punches well above its weight.
Very nice lens and a bit of a game changer as there’s not too much point in splashing the cash on an older manual focus lens when this budget offering from pentax can be got for very little more and it’s new. 8 but as with most lenses the performance improves a couple of stops later. Certainly a lens that i am very comfortable and more importantly confident using.
Has produced some great portrait photos with beautifully soft dappled backgrounds when set to f/1. 8 on my pentax k-x digital slr. Brings me back many years to the great pictures i used to take on my film based pentax mesuper which had a 50mm f/1. Pity pentax have faded as a prime quality brand over the years, losing their identity and independence as a company.
I’d been disappointed by the clarity of the photos produced by the 18mm-135mm lens that came with my k-30, particularly in low light. Had been about to write the camera off as a bad decision and move on, but thought i’d try this lens first. Has made all the difference. Despite the lack of zoom it provides me with virtually all the capability i need on a day to day basis. Everything from landscape shots to snaps at a dinner table. Not a surprise, i guess, that it’s better than the 18-135 in low light, given the much larger maximum aperture. It does have a plastic body, but in practice feels well built. Worth being aware though that depth of field is extremely shallow on maximum aperture, as noted in other reviews. Often this produces a nice effect. Other times it’s a bit annoying, with one person in a group out of focus if not exactly the same distance from the camera. All in all, the k-30 is now a keeper.

While i can’t deny the convenience of a dslr, one thing i miss from my old film slr is the special sharpness you get with a prime lens – somehow zoom lenses always seem to be just a little soft in comparison. Problem is that most dslr prime lenses are really expensive, and i could never justify the cost. While i’d have liked a slightly wider angle than this, it’s a focal length which works very well in most applications, being roughly equivalent to a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera. This one is a lot cheaper than many primes, is very sharp, and works far better in low light than the kit zoom lens. It pretty much stays attached to the camera all the time because it just takes better pictures. It is slightly plastic in construction, but not in ways that i would expect to matter in the slightest.
Nice enough lens, very light. I bought it for my fuji x system so only use it on manual and with an adapter that allows me to change aperture (beware no aperture control on the lens itself).
This is a good quality lens, not used it much but will do in the spring.
This has to be the best value lens out there. Excellent walkabout lens, nice and light, and a useful focal length. Used it in the studio with no flare from the big softboxes pointed towards it. Haven’t given it a full test, but i couldn’t be happier at that price. Not sure what else a lens is supposed to do :).
Very sharp, very cheap but is very noisy. But as a cheap brought lens it does the job.
SMC PENTAX-da 50mmF1.8 Medium Telephoto Lens Focal Length 76.5mm (Equivalent To 35mm Format) Bright Open F Value and Round Iris Diaphragm Beautifl Bokeh suitable for Portraits, Snapshots Lightweight : Great little lense if you’re prepared to manually focus. Autofocusing on pentax k100d just doesn’t happen, ever. With pentax k7, it’s a hit and miss. Bought it fully aware of the problem and very content nevertheless considering the price.

As an enthusiastic pentaxian (several cameras and lenses) i waited for the price of this amazing lens to drop down before i bought it. Like all my pentax lenses it is well built and has great optical quality. Do not be put off by this models light weight or that it has a plastic rather than a metal mount. I bought mine in december so i have been able to test it out. I really works well in low light conditions (the reason i why i bought it). I already have an older pentax m series 50mm f. 17 lens that performs superbly on modern cameras ( fits straight no to all pentax dslr’s and other makes with a suitable adapter) despite being more than 30 years old but as my eyes get older focusing manually all the time (as you must with any m series lens) i don’t always nail the focus point each time. With the da50 focusing is very fast, smooth and always spot on. A real joy to use and no missed shots.
I more or less knew what to expect based on other reviews but this lens still managed to surprise me. Light and unobtrusive yet sharp, sharp, sharp even at its full f1. Close focussing is actually better than with the older smc-f50mm/f1. 7 and the bokeh comes close to that of the da*50-135mm/f2. 8 – quite an accomplishment for a lens that costs about 15% of that epic star lens. The price was excellent and delivery (free with super-saver) was within a week, give or take a day or two. All in all a winner from whatever way you want to look at it.
Very sharp, good contrast, i really love how shallow depth of field is :)i saw some other mean reviews, which said ‘it does not auto-focus’. It’s not perfect, i’d rate 8/10, but it does auto-focus, you just need to learn how to do it :dthis is a must-have.
Very good quality lens for the price and will take better quality photos than most zoom lenses 4 times the price. Due to aps-c crop factor of 1. 5 this lens works like a 75mm on a full frame camera so you need to move further away from what you want to photograph than you might think. Good for portrait of product photography or where you want to focus on some detail. But for landscape and buildings and everyday the 35mm (equivalant to a 50mm on full frame) might be more useful everyday. The lens is still very good its just not the general purpose lens that the 50mm is on a full frame camera.
It may be plastic mounted but has an excellent performance producing really sharp images. All this for a budget price. This makes a good walkabout lens.
For the price it is nearly perfect. But has a problem that makes it not so excellent: the focus is for some reason often off. With slower moving things it is very nice, but with some moving objects it is not possible to use autofocus properly. However: if anyone can get better at this price, please tell me. I am satisfied with the picture quality. And overall i really like this lens. I’d give it five star as it is quite inexpensive. But at the moment i feel four is better.

A brilliant little lens and so cheap you could almost throw it away if it got scratched. I took it with me to a local river just to test it and although these pictures are more snapshots than works of art, they will give a potential buyer some idea of what they get for their money – and it’s quite a lot. 100003185884980&type=3 or https://www. I wanted something that i could just keep on the camera but not just end up with basic snaps. This gives awesome portraits and can be used for scenic shots. You need to step back a bit due to the fov compared to say 35mm, but i don’t mind that.
Won’t go into all the camera bull like a lot do, it’s a good lens, not fantastic build but if your climbing up mountains you can afford spares at this price that’s how i look at it, for everyday use it’s good, from aps-c you’ll get your nice blurry background or bokeh ( god i hate these photography snob words and i’ve been a pro 35 years lol ) it makes the usual cheap fuss and bother noise that pentax do on these budgets but that’s something you live with. Pentax have to change the fact that they sell their cameras with garbage kit lenses and their mid range are mostly garbage also unless you want the bird watches manual focus old ones god forbid, anyway it’s a trade off like most things in this game but buy one you won’t be disappointed by the images. If you want to ask anything you’ll have to message i don’t return to reviews ever.
Considering the price the lens works really well. On aps-c it is the angle quite narrow, but i find use for it quite often. I did not really select anyhow the right piece and taken what they send me after online order and i did not spit any obvious optical issues. The plastic socket is not great, but it is an exchange for the lower price.
Excellent lens; compact, light, fast and great value. Gives you about 3 extra stops over a typical kit lens of around f3. 5 and that makes a huge difference to indoor shooting. Only criticism i can think of is the min focus is around 0.
I bought this for my wife’s k20d camera when it appeared in an amazon deal. I’d been discussing prime lenses with a relative (who heads a photographic society) and was interested to see whether all the breathless enthusiasm was justified. The short answer – it isthe k20d is getting to be fairly old-tech these days, but is still a force to be reckoned with as slrs go, with a decent sensor density and in-camera processing that yields remarkable images, especially when it is teamed up with the right lens – which is where this comes in. I recently bought a 50mm fx prime for my smaller-sensor nikon d80, expecting to get similar results to this pentax lens, and realised that sometimes the lens shows up the limitations of the camera. The k20d may no longer have market-leading sensor density, but it definitely benefits from this excellent lens, and if your camera is anything near 16 megapixels or above, you will notice similar or even more spectacular results. In use, the lens is very quick to focus because the components are very light – there is no ‘hunting’ either side of the actual correct focus as you get with larger lenses and, unlike my nikon 50mm prime, it is quiet in operation. It’s a small difference, but if you’ve been using long zooms or telephotos for your photography, the snappy focus of small lenses like this is a revelation. The quality of images is the point, and having fewer lens elements goes a long way to eradicating the small errors that creep in with all but the most precisely engineered lenses – you can get better quality for less simply by leaving things out, which is the attraction of prime lenses. Where this lens really stands out (as better than my nikon equivalent) is in the depth of field effects and the quality of bokeh (the arty blurring of backgrounds) that i believe stems from the iris petals, which are subtly curved. As is uaul for prime lenses, especially 50mm, you need to pay quite a bit of attention to depth of field and focus, which are more critical for 50mm lenses where the dof can become very narrow in close-up, and really highlight out-of-focus areas – if you’re taking a shot acrosss someone’s face and can see both eyes, it comes down to the point where you have to work at getting both eyes in focus by managing the aperture very carefully (and where depth-of-field preview becomes essential). In that senses, lenses like this, used carefully and thoughtfully, make better photographers of us all. It may be a bit of a bind to zoom with this lens, since that involves walking towards and away from your subject (), but the results are definitely worth looking at.

It is now my absolute favourite.
Fantastic cheap lens from pentax. Quite sharp (day and night compared to kit or 50/1. 8), essentially free from aberrations or distortion, and very lightweight. It became my day-to-day lens. When i have a tripod with me, i even prefer this one to pentax 12-24 – a 3-4 frame stitch gives much better results.
Only niggle is slightly noisier than it should be but for the money and the stellar optical quality, this is not picking. A big step up in sharpness across the range compared to kit lens. Also an improvement over the 18-135 which is already pretty damn good.
Not long since i had this lens i had big scare, my camera with this on it on a mono pod hit the ground really hard. After fiddling with it it was good as it can be minus the stickers, other wise it’s not too expensive to replace with a new 1.
This is a lovely lense for getting a really good depth of field. At present there seems to be just two that go as low as f1. 8, one at something like £799 and this one at £99 when i purchased it. Not being professional photograher, in fact a complete ameteur just learning, i dont kow what the difference between them are. The next lowest produced i believe is a slr rather than a dslr lense at f1. 4, as an ameteaur i stuck to the digital lense for safety. It does do exactly what it says on the tin though, lovely pictures with great deapth of field.
Yes it may feel cheap thanks to its plastic construction, but the performance is exceptional, and the price point is unbelievable. If you are looking for a cheap way to get great results for portrait photography then this lens is for you. 8 aperture the edges of the image do become a bit fringed, so i would recommend keeping it at 2.

Note: tested on pentax k-5 and k-s2pros+ very affordable+ better value and image quality than canon ef 50mm f1. 8 ii (2nd generation), but the canon ef 50mm f1. 8 std
might be a close competitor if canon gets the bokeh right+ very appealing bokeh+ extremely fast af speed+ very light and compact – great to carry around+ surprisingly good build quality for a £80 lens+ front element does not rotate, so you can use polarising or nd filters without worrying+ appealing lens design (personal opinion, but it does look quite slick)+ makes your viewfinder look very bright (but also makes lenses slower than f2. 8 look depressingly dark through the pentaprism)cons- produces a lot of noise when focusing (sounds almost like a mini chainsaw)this is worked around by using mf manual focus which is perfectly possible, but requires some practice. – a uv (preferably hybrid polarized uv) haze filter is necessary to prevent dust from entering the inside of the lens- af is sometimes inaccurate (might be okay for premium bodies with af correction such as the k-7, k-5, k-3 etc. , but my k-s2 does not have this)- image sharpness at f1. 8 is average and only when stopped down to f2. 8 and above you will have a decently sharp centre, but then you lose the nice bokeh- plastic mount will wear over time- af ring rotates (if you touch it while af is running, you will permenently damage the motor)- turning the af ring when the drive mode is set to af on the camera will result in you (or whoever is currently operating the camera and lens) breaking the lens motorverdict: until pentax releases a silent and weather sealed medium end da 50mm f1. 4 dc and/or revises the da* 55mm f1. 4, i will be keeping this sample.
Lightweight, reasonably quick to focus it has the equivalent of 76mm. Focal length on a full frame camera, making it an ideal portrait lens. The noise it makes while focussing is a fairly quiet. This is in contrast to the excellent 35mm. Lens which is noisy & snappy in comparison. 4 for more sharpness with great background bokeh. You will notice how much better it performs than the 18-55mm. Standard lens which isn’t too bad itself.
A pretty good standard pentax lens.
