Sony SAL35F14G A Mount – Full Frame 35mm F1 : fantastic clarity and quality

A prime lens of this quality at this price, [i paid £149. 88from amazon less £30 cashback from sony] must make it a relative bargain. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. Far better in low light and for perspective at short range than the kit 18-55 zoom lens that came with my a57. Not that the zoom is a bad lens but this does different things better as a prime fixed focal length lens.

This is one fine lens for aps-c sony bodies. 8, getting noticeably better by stopping down a bit. I find bokeh quite pleasing and i really love the feel this lens gives to b&w images. Build is not outstanding, but considering price it seems like a fair trade. Of course it comes with nice hood and proper caps. Definitively super reccomended.

The item arrived before time but has not been used much as of yet but have been impressed with it so far so will recommend it and the supplier too.

A super lens, not cheap but not as dear as some. A bargain at this level, good quality results.

I would recommend this lens to any one with a sony alpha.

Great as my first prime lens to move my skills a bit further.

Brill bit of kit use it more that the standard lense.

Built to a low budget and it does look and feel like it, but i did know this before i bought it to fill a smallish requirement which would not justify big bucks. It does however deliver good quality images throughout its f-stop range, peaking maybe at f8, and with good bokeh down at f1.

  • Good lensbut with reservations

  • Impressive light weight, low light lens

  • Fantastic picture quality in any light!

This is part of what sony call their “easy choice” alpha lens range (along with the 85mm f2. 8) – the lens is absoultely deserving of this description – it is indeed an ‘easy choice’ because it is cheap yet brilliant . This is what those in the know call a ‘plastic fantastic’ lens – a lens that is built cheaply yet performs as if it were a lens far more expensive. So, what you have here is a cheap and cheerful ‘made in china’ plastic lens with a plastic lens mount. Af is reasonably snappy on slts like the sony a57 or a77 but a little noisy for video use unless you plan to use an external mic or recorder. It is (obviously at this price) not weather sealed like the superb sony 16-50 f2. 8 ssm lens, and given the plastic lens mount, should probably be handled with care when mounting/dismounting on your camera. But – bottom line – iq is superb – not just for the price, but at any price – you could use the lens for pro work and in terms of iq it absoultely delivers in terms of resolution/sharpness, with a decently pleasant rendering of out of focus areas as well (bokeh). Seriously, in terms of iq this lens is an absolute steal, just like the 85 2. Ca and purple fringeing can rear their head under certain high contrast conditions with bright objkects or lights in the image – this is common in cheaper lenses lacking expensive apo or ed elements. The limitations of the focal length – the crop factor on sony dslrs and slts is 1. 5mm equivalent focal length (35mm equivalent) – while this is close to what was considered the ‘standard’ 35mm focal length in the 1970s and 1980s (50mm), it is not wide enough for many interior shots and not long enough for some kinds of portrait photography (i prefer the cheap but impressive sony 85mm f2. It is a nice lens for street photography and videography if you have external sound recording setup though. If you can get close up without disturbing your subject too much, it is very nice indeed for indoor photography work – i’ve got great baby and young children portraits with this lens – pro quality ones in fact. But for working with teenagers or adults the 85 2.

After recently buying the sony a65 camera i then decided it was time to buy my first prime lens. After much research into 30mm, 35mm & 50mm lens i decided to opt for this one. I can only echo the positive comments others have left.

I bought this as my first prime lens for my a65. I’m very impressed, compared to the 18-55 kit lens the image quality is a big improvement. It works really well in low light situations as well, where before i would have had to use flash. I was debating between this and the 50mm prime but i’m certain i made the right decision as 50mm would be too much for most indoor shots. Since buying it, i’ve hardly taken it off.

I have used this lens on a number of professional video shoots on a panasonic camera via an adaptor with no problem. Don’t understand the other negative review on video shoots using this lens. I have had no focussing issues with the lens shooting in a variety of conditions. Great quality for the price.

Fantastic lens, sharp and crisp. Good value and must have in any lens collection. Use for landscapes, urban photography and portraits.

Being an amateur photographer i decided to buy my first prime lens and went for the 35mm f1. 8 (i have a a65, crop factor 1. This is an excelent lens, very, very, very sharp and fast. And is clearly unexpensive, specially when you consider it’s twing sister with f1. It doesn’t feel cheap to touch or operate, has a sharp and fast autofocus (a little bit louder than i’d expect though), all in all, a great buy. Go for it if you can’t afford the f1.

This is a decent, good value lens. Lightweight and better built than some reviewers suggest. It is a first-rate lens in perfect lighting but can be very unforgiving at other times. The minutest error in focussing, or the slightest movement at slow speeds/wide apertures is enough to ruin a shot and make it not just ‘soft’ but actually out of focus, despite what the green light indicates. I usually prefer to use spot-focussing but with this lens i find the ‘zone’ focus setting gives more consistent results. The old adage about using a shutter speed at least as fast as the focal length of the lens you are using certainly applies to this lens. Keep that in mind and you should be okay.

Although i am no expert photographer, it is already clear to me that this is an excellent lens for portrait photography. Works brilliantly in poor light, fast focus, and is ultra sharp.

Great fixed focus lense for sony a mount cameras for any situation not requiring a zoom lens although optical zoom is supported.

Excellent lens for such a low price, sharp lens from 2. 2 onwards, bit soft wide open, this is excellent value for money, if you have a sony slr/slt this is a must have lens especially for portraits, but also close up work as it has a very short focussing distance.

Very fast and makes the difference if you want to shoot indoors with no flash. Way above avarage optic quality. Highly recommended as the main lens of a sony a slr.

I spotted this lens in a camera mag review & it had a very good write up. It is very well made – the plastic construction of the body is of good quality & certainly not ‘plasticky’. The lens is sharp & the close up range very good & all at a very good price.

Excellent lens, very bright. Lightweight, good picture quality and color reproduction.

Recently the price dropped a bit on this lens, so i picked one up with a gift voucher i had from sony directly. I’ve used all the 3 ‘budget primes’ from sony in the past, on balance this is probably the most appealing of the 3 lenses (35/50/85mm) for aps-c users. It has to be said that the build is pretty cheap just like the other lenses. Apart from the plastic mount, the casing is quite low density and clearly built on a budget, though at least you do get a hood with the lens. This costs a little bit more than the 50mm f1. 8 sony lens, but probably for general use, a better first purchase option as the 35mm gives you an equivalent of around 52mm for a crop sensor. I’ve used the nikon 35mm f1. 4 lenses as well, so i’ll compare between those offerings to see how this stacks up. Usual pro/con listpro:+ affordable and fast, not much else to say but f1.

Works a treat, a good bargain.

This is a series of four sony lenses at about £150 each, i find they are all perform very well, even if they can feel cheap and plasticy.

I am new to photography but i think that this is a fantastic lens.

First i was wondering what this small guy can do. Good build quality and comfort. I would recommend this for anyone against a 18-55 kit lens.

A bit noisy in use, a little loose around the focus ring.

It produces very sharp images and is very light and compact. Only not so good thing is it’s plastic build.

The sony alpha range is not over-burdened with prime lenses in the same way that the mft format is but there are some gems in there and this is one of them. Its positioned in the sony alpha budget range but should not be overlooked due to that. I have used this on my sony alpha a65 and it’s a great performer. It becomes an effective 50mm on a cropped sensor which is great for a number of scenarios including candid family shots, street photography and even some landscape work. The colour rendition is great and the focusing speed is pretty good. Also, it comes with a lens hood – are you listening olympus?.

Decided to buy wide angle lens from amazon warehouse as seemed good deal, have used lens couple of times, impressed with low light performance, lightweight and quiet in operation. One problem was amazon warehouse showing stock, but after i contacted amazon they said item had been lost in warehouse, and i had to reorder.

Work well and great price work well for a wide angle fix zoom lens.

Everything i hoped for and more. This lens is excellent value and lives up to expectation. The images from it have super definition. I could not want more and paying many times more for a similar lens would not increase my satisfaction.

Fantastic clarity and quality, even if it does feel a little plasticytiny little lens, and i think on my crop-sensor body it acts more like a 50mm than a 35mm.

Great for the amature photographer.

Really pleased with this lens. Lightweight, fast, quick focus and clear images. Copes really well in poor light. Easy to achieve small depth of field. Particularly good in portrait and reasonably close work although competent at landscape. Although it is plastictky it seems strong enough for purpose – i have not been put off by this and i certainly enjoy having such a light lens to carry. Would recommend this lens as a valuable addition to their camera equipment.
