Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens – An excellent all-rounder!

Excellent and versatile lens. Image quality is very good, asyou would expect from nikon.

I bought the original 24-120 some time ago and was never satisfied with it (lack of sharpness and clarity). I sold it and bought the 28-300. Though ok this lens again is not up to my (and nikon’s old) standards, and when focussing close (say up to 5 metres) the 300mm setting is only equivalent to 180mm. Nikon know this and seem to think it is acceptable. Decided to try the new f4 24-120. It is superb, as sharp as any zoom lens i have used. No contrast or flare problems. Very slight barrel distortion at 24, but not significant and less than the 28-300 at 28.

Since i have this lens it rarely get off my d800. It’s very sharp if you use it well. I will compare it with another i have the 28-300. In many reviews i saw they were supposedly same quality so better get the 28-300. I have both and results are just incomparable. From wide angle landscape to portrait, it does it all perfectly.

I wanted a quality ‘do it all’ lens for my nikon d600 and thats what i got, well nearly. To start with the lens is satisfyingly heavy and feels really well made. All the rings and switches ooze quality just like a rolls royce in their peak. With so much glass at the front i got a quality uv filter to protect it. Buying a new filter which has given it’s life to protect the lens it is on is always cost effective. I have now had it a few weeks and the images from the d600 with this lens are excellent. When i said in the first paragraph, well nearly, it does not quite do it all. There are times when i need more telephoto power for wildlife etc so will buy a zoom telephoto to go with this excellent lens. This is a lens to keep on your camera 95% of the time meaning you are usually ready for the quick shot instantly and not having to change lenses often means less dust gets into the camera. This lens is highly recommended.

Love this lens, lots of reviews about to read if you wish. My personal feeling is its well worth the money and i paid about £180 more than it is now. If you use photoshop/ lr the distortion and vignetting are gone at the click of a button. I have found this to be very sharp and not too heavy.

Just used this in the studio and am genuinely surprised how much better than my 24-85 this is- pin sharp and better contrast. Size and weight are fine for me. Toss up between this and the 24-70, i will miss the 1 stop of extra bokeh but the extra reach and vrii more than make up for it, ideal lens for weddings.

The lens exceeded my expectation in it versatility. It is an ideal lens for general photography with staggering results. It is easy to use and when used with a tripod for longer shots, the results are spectacular.

I had read mixed reviews about this lens, but i am so glad i bought it. I have found it to be a great lens. The pictures are extremely sharp. It focuses extremely quickly and accurately. I have no creep which i have seen mentioned in other reviews. It is a very versatile lens and although only f4 it has still proved fast enough linked with the very good vr. I am finding this lens now sits on my camera most of the time,.

Amazing clarity, superb lense.

Great all round lens on my d610.

I originally had the nikon 24-70mm f/2. 8 and in the beginning i loved the lens with its large f/2. 8 aperture, quick focusing and sharp image results; if only it had vr; but eventually the honeymoon period came to an end when one day the zoom became gritty and unsmooth in operation and started jamming up. I found out that this was a common issue with the 24-70mm lens and sent it off to nikon for repair. After the repair the lens was never as good as it was originally, especially with regard to edge sharpness and even in the good times using this the lens i found the maximum zoom of 70mm was a bit on the short side and wished for more reach. In the end i sold my 24-70mm f/2. 8 and decided to try the nikon 24-120mm f/4 vrii lens and i’m glad that i did:-although the 24-120mm only has a maximum aperture of f/4; vrii more than makes up for it; especially at the telephoto end when the light gets low; enabling one to keep the iso setting down for maximum quality images. The extra zoom reach to 120mm is really welcome and is great for portraits; it makes this lens the ideal lens for walkabouts; on holiday, weddings etc. And professionals do use this lens. Then there’s the price, one can buy two or three of these for the cost of the new 24-70mm vr lens; which makes the 24-120mm vrii lens excellent value for money.

Good nikon lenses are not cheap and deciding to replace the 24-120 f3. 5 kit lens that came with my nikon d700 with an almost identical lens for a big outlay was not easy. However, the lens has really lived up to the reviews and the two lenses are like chalk and cheese. The original lens has a bad reputation but in truth aint as bad as they say depending upon your needs and the body you use it on. If you are serious about your images though then this f4 lens is superb. The improvement in sharpness and clarity and colour edge to edge was markedly different. An excellent travel lens, this functions as my prime and i find i hardly ever switch to a super wide or telephoto.

I was lucky enough to find one of these in a sale and, as i’d wanted one for a long time, i snapped it up. It arrived quickly, perfectly packed and complete in its original packaging. Obviously, i couldn’t wait to try it out and, barely out of the package, it went straight onto my nikon d750 for a wide angle shot of my kitchen. The image looked so good on the camera that i had to put it onto my 27-in imac screen—it was a stunning photo, extremely sharp and with no sign of aberrations. Since then i’ve taken pictures with it at all the interim settings up to 120mm and i’m delighted with it. It’s an ideal lens for walking about, provided you accept that it’s no lightweight. However, i’ve been used to carrying around a 28-300mm, and there’s little difference in weight. The extra bit of wide-angle performance is useful and i don’t need the longer length very often. It’s been a good buy and i’d recommend it as an excellent lens that would cover the bulk of requirements for many photographers. Here are the specifications for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens:

Great all rounder lens, i’m not very technical but this lens gives me all the range that i need for travelling, it’s light weight and this lens got me back into photography so i’m ever so pleased with it.

I bought this lens for my nikon d610 and i am extremely pleased with the auto focus reacts very quickly the colours and detail are great,a very good buy.

This is so much better than i was expecting. :d even zoomed in all the way great clarity with vr.

Excellent, i will buy from you again.

Sharp and fast focus, this lens although not the pro 2. 8 series at f4 you still get a great picture and at the 24 120 range it is now my go to lens, i find this better than some prime lens that iv had, obviously lower priced ones but this is a must for your kit if you can’t spend the extra £500+ on the 2. 8it is solid but not too heavy yet the build quality is standard nikon, great as always. The vr with 2 levels of vr is so beneficial you can certainly get an extra stop down or more because of this in low light, even at f4 and not 2.

Firstly the lens arrived in lightning time. This lens is an excellent addition to any kit and the image quality is outstanding. No lens creep whatsoever and a nice reassuring weight. Some may say expensive, but in my view worth every penny and it has a very nice firm quality feel. A good investment if you ever want to upgrade to fx but works beautifully on dx and extends the boundaries if you already have a 16-85mm dx and need to start at a longer focal length. Coupled with a tokina 12-24mm if carrying two lenses and you’ve got all you really need.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • The perfect companion for my D800
  • An excellent all-rounder!
  • Fantastically versatile little lens

This is an excellent lens from nikon, and i would highly recommend it. The colours, contrast and sharpness produced by it are simply wonderful. Build quality is semi-professional, but the optics are pro all the way.

Excellent price, ahead on delivery to my door. It was good on the tracking you estimate for delivery was very good.

An absolutely superb lens will now be my main workhorse.

This is a superb product, with the usual nikon robust build quality. Produces sharp images from an allround focal length, making it a truly versatile lens. Covering wide angle through telephoto means it has replaced three seperate lenses in my workflow, which at times is a huge advantage. The constant aperture through the focal length range is a real asset, and f/4 is fast enough for most needs. Okay for lower light levels an f/2. 8 or faster lens would be better, but for most situations and working with flash f/4 is enough. As a professional user, i am pleased to highly recommended this is a must have product for any nikon enthusiast.

Excellent lens providing great images and arrived in perfect condition all as described.

I bought this lens for travel photography so that i could put it on my camera and not worry about taking lots of other lenses around with me. It turned out to be a wonderful little lens that quickly became a firm favourite of mine – it was only until i replaced it with a 24-70 2. The lens delivers crisp sharp images and a wonderful bokeh at 120mm f/4 with very little fall-off and no sign of aberration. It is wonderfully versatile to the point that i even used it for concert photography because of its fast low-light focus capabilities. It is a wonderful lens that is lighter than the 24-70mm f/2. If don’t need the extra stop, i would highly recommend it over it’s more expensive cousin.

The lens is well built and give good clear images, the vr is good and fast focusing and is not to heavy and large to add to your camera. Like all nikon lenses full frame fx is a little expensive. But amazon now lets you pay monthly with no interest. Hope they do this on more of there products.

This a a great lens and good value for a ‘pro’ spec lens with a gold ring. Ideal as a ‘do it all’ lens, i bought it in preference to the much more expensive 24-70mm as it has vr and much longer reach. It’s very sharp and has great contrast and colour rendition. I use it with a d610 and it’s a great combination. The only issue i’d say you need to be aware of is there is quite heavy barrel distortion at the wide end but you can usually fix this in lightroom easily. There’s also noticeable vignetting at 24mm but this is even easier to fix. I shot a wedding with this recently and the couple were delighted with the results although next time i will also take something with a 2. 8 or bigger aperture for the shallow dof shots. All in all, highly recommended if you want a general purpose lens for fx.

After 50 years of photography and dozens of cameras and lenses, i have come to this conclusion. This is the lens i have been looking for all my life. I have always had a problem with camera shake from youth. Many of the fantastic prime lenses i used from pentax, olympus and nikon were never seen at their greatest potential unless i used a tripod. However this zoom lens fitted to a d600 body with the combination of its weight and balance plus the best vr i have used on a nikon lens means i can now shoot at or below 1/25th second regularly without shake. I always believed i could capture 90% of shots with a 24mm and a 105mm and this lens gives it all. The colour rendition is so impressive and the control of flare is very good. Corner sharpness has not been an issue for me and i can’t see any problems with the sample i have. I used to carry a bag of primes – 20mm 2. 8g but got tired of juggling and struggling with all this equipment. Now i am freed up and can focus on composing shots within the boundries of this lens which is no restriction and very little difference in quality to the primes. If you think you need better bokeh for then i can only recommend the 85mm 1.

I had never had a wide angle zoom before, so this was a revelation and i am completely happy with it. I shoot pretty much everything and find the focal range covers a huge amount of the photography i take and gives me excellent image quality.

I brought it for my new d750 , is full frame lens sharp image i m happy with it.

I had organised a trip to iceland so purchased a d750 and eventually settled on his lens. My mate was pushing me towards the 2. 8 24-70 but i wasn’t convinced it was worth the extra money and then i wondered whether the extra zoom of 120 was a better decision despite it being f4. It turned out to be the right decision. I do a lot of landscape work and the extra zoom is really handy. The f4 doesn’t bother me as much as i thought but that doesn’t tend to factor with landscapes. The images are sharp, the zoom fast and the vr exceptionally handy. I’ve also used this for weddings. Yes, a lens with a bigger aperture is a necessity particularly where the venue is dark such as a church but i found myself switching back to this lens after the main wedding. Sure you don’t get the bokeh shots but, it does really well in low lit conditions.

Great lens with a really useful focal range. It’s pretty sharp, good enough for press, pr and wedding work. Not the fastest focussing lens in the world, but again it’s workable. Distortion is very noticeable at wide end but can mostly be corrected in lightroom or similar programmes. It’s light and feels a little plasticky. Apart from that it’s probably the only lens i use for about 75% of my work.
