Razer Widow Ultimate 2014 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard : 5 stars – Love it, mostly

Black widow ultimate a great piece of kit, one of the best keyboards i have come across. I make it a point of researching items i buy, this item stood out as one of the best. It is not cheap but it is worth the pennies. As any gamer will tell you good kit leads to a great game so do yourself a favour.

Only fault is not spill proof. Spilt coke over twice in a year and it stopped working immediately. Somehow got lucky by running warm water through it extensively while off of course and then wrapping it in a towel and leaving it for a month or two then retrying. It still works very well no sticky keys and good quality.

Update: after months of leaving it in the airing cupboard, i can now confirm it works againi loved my razor keyboard. I have nothing bad to say other than how to keys were laid out and i got used to it quickly. However i did realise on the 7th of april at the product doesn’t do very well against (a very small amount) of liquid. I spilt my iced coffee and a tad hit the keys. I cleaned it out and despite my best efforts the keyboard couldn’t be saved. So don’t spill liquids on/near it. Despite my personal problems, it’s a brilliant product. I had no complaints and thoroughly recommend this keyboard.

Excellent keyboard for anyone that is a regular fps player. Proslight and easy keys to pressgamer mode that disables the windows keyback light on the key so can see in the darkconsno wrist rest so i went and bought a gel onefunction keys are shift and f keys would be better separatea little bit priceyover all very good keyboard.

This keyboard is a joy to use. It sounds and feels wonderful. I love the emerald green colouring which you can have ranging from bright to slight to adapt to the surrounds. You can’t change the colour of the backing light but i love it anyway 🙂 you can use the razer synapse software to assign all the keys on the keyboard for their own use, such as macro’s etc too. Seems really useful though i havn’t had need to use it yet. The keyboard also came with a 2 year warranty which required registering, but seems like a nice cherry on top of a great product. It feels incredibly responsive while playing games. Much more so than my old mechanical keyboard which had black alps, which are themselves wonderful for gaming. The slimline build of the keyboard is ergonomic which is useful for myself as i often use a joystick for games.

This keyboard from razer in my opinion very good as are all products from razer. The build quality is very good, it is a very strong and solid keyboard. The usb and headphone and mic jack pass throughs are very useful, i often use the usb pass through to charge things such as my phone. The back lighting is is very bright for this keyboard which makes it bright enough to use in the day however, if you are using it in the dark then you can dim the back lighting so that it is not too bright. Overall i think this keyboard is built to a very high standard and is a great product.

Very nice keyboard, it looks excellent and the tactile feedback on each key is also very nice. One issue i do have however is that a couple of keys vary in consistency, for example my ‘y’ and right side ‘enter’ keys don’t make the same clicky noise as the rest of the keys on my keyboard, it’s not noticeable when you’re typing but nevertheless for over £100. 00 i’d expect every key to be equal. The keys also make a ‘thud’ sound as they bottom out (get pressed all the way down) this could be due to the fact i’m quite heavy handed i don’t know, however i rectified the problem buy purchasing some mechanical keyboard switch dampeners which are like very small o-rings that fit underneath each key to silence the ‘bottoming out sound’ now i’ve installed them all i hear is that sexy clickity-clack sound, which can i add sounds a lot nicer than cherry mx blues. That aside, once i had customised the keyboard to my own liking it was astonishing, the only reason i gave it 4 starts was due to the inconsistency between some keys (bare in mind that could just be my keyboard)i cannot fault build quality, and that’s saying something coming from someone who usually buys apple products. Shipping was prompt and my item was delivered next day in perfect conditioni would also recommend buying an extended mouse mat to put this keyboard on as again it eliminates some of the thudding sound as you hit each key.

I was always inloved with mechanical keyboards. Made the mistake buying the apex raw by steelseries and completely regretted it expecting something nice. Finally i bought the razer blackwidow and i must say that the difference is huge. I chose the keyboard with clicky sound and its just so satisfying :))feels extremely comfortable. Good features including custom macrogreat keyboard backlight. Tbh i’d still go for it if it was £130.

It’s quite loud to type quickly on, however, but its a lot more compact than my previous cyborg v7 which it is replacing. I think the loudness is a bit of an issue – it’s quite nice but a bit excessive – and it’s taking me time to get used to the keyboard layout as the v7 macro keys were way off the keyboard (thus contributing to the size), whereas i often find myself hitting the function key when i’m aiming for control. Tilda for 1 is a big issue too still. But these will work themselves out with time. The other issue is the price. At £100 or so, i cannot fully endorse this. I’m pleased i bought it, but it’s excessive and a bit overindulgent.

I definitely enjoy the responsiveness, which is all that really matters for fps gaming on a high-end rig. Loud key clicks though – i don’t think i would have chosen it if i’d played on one before i bought it, but it was at a good price. The font on the keys wasn’t a good choice.

I decided to get this on a lightning deal and it was worth it. After having spent 10-20 quid on basic or ‘normal’ (non mechanical ) keyboards, i finally decided to just spend some more and get something that would last. I am glad i did, this keyboard apart from having all the bells and whistles ( the backlit keys, macro programmable keys) feels great. I like the fact every key is programmable, so for example i have reconfigured my f1 key as well as my shift key because of the type of games and software i use. One word of caution is that you will definitely need some time to adjust, as you have the macro keys on the left your fingers automatically stray there and your typing position shifts to the left a bit ( so you hit the macro key accidentally instead of the shift key). I have yet to get used to it so i just put a credit card in the groove between the keys in order to create a little ‘wall’ when i am typing.

Wire is a bit thick, usb is a bit fiddly, and headphone port i am yet to use/get working. Great keyboard though – i’d look into a cheaper brand next time though.

But please stop using hermes to deliver as they have now left two different parcels outside a back door on a public access drive way just leaning against the door. I keep trying to contact their customer service to make a complaint directly to them as electrical items are going to get damaged in the ran and or stolen.

After having to use a really bad cheap keyboard from tesco’s for several months after my razer deathstalker stopped working, this keyboard is a godsend, even though it’s my first mechanical keyboard meaning i have relatively next to no experience with them i definitely recommend to anyone who is thinking of buying it if they have the opportunity. I bought the razer blackwidow when there was a discount i just couldn’t let it slip, even bought prime just to be eligible. I’m having little problems with hand placement due to the macro keys to the left of the keyboard, but i am sure in time i will get used to it.

Great keyboard, this is my first mechanical keyboard and i’m in love with it. This keyboard looks great and the backlighting is a great colour. Compared the membrane keyboards that i have previously owned the mechanical switches definitely delivered on the promises of advantages of the switches. The clicking sound may not be everyone but i like the sound and the usb and audio jacks in the side of the keyboard are useful however i am somewhat worried about hitting them with my mouse whilst playing games. I haven’t tried the macro key bindings yet however will look to do so soon. They are kinda close to the rest of the keyboard and at first the added lines of buttons confused me as it messed up my hand placement but the adjustment came quickly.

Typing this on my new keyboard, i had heard some bad things about razer. But i decided to give this a try (coming from corsair k70) and i am very pleased. I love the feel of the switches, the sound is amazing, the lights, the looks, everything. Seriously just buy it and thank me later.

Love this keyboard so far, most defiantly the best keyboard i have ever used, defiantly a huge step up from the cheap keyboards i’m used to absolutely love the lighting makes it so much easier to type when your in the dark, or see what controls your putting in,one negative opinion of it is the usb port on the keyboard, it uses two wires from the razer to the pc one for power and key signals and such then a separate one for the usb, would have preferred it all be in one cable, but it may just not have been possible.

Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (USB, Fully Programmable with 5 Macro Keys) : Cracking pc for both gaming and general use, love the new razer keys, they may no longer be made in germany but they’re more tactile then ever and i consider this easily the best keyboard i’ve ever used, love it.

Great piece of kit and on sale when i bought it, so excellent value. One of the keys’ lights hasn’t worked since i had it (f5), but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

I’ve been a fan of razer products for a few years now, so when i decided to build myself a decent gaming rig i wanted to treat myself to nice mechanical keyboard. Yes this may by slightly more expensive then some of the other mechanical keyboards on the market but with razer you get what you pay for, a top of the line product packed with features. This keyboard comes with 2 extra usb 2. 0 ports and audio ports on the side. Keep in mind however this keyboard requires 2 usb ports to work so make sure you have enough free. Also the cable is a nice durable braided cord but is a lot thicker than a standard keyboard lead. My only negative is how loud typing can be, at first it sounded great and every press of the keys felt responsive and tactile. But soon that novelty wears off when its late at night and everyone can hear you tapping away at your keyboard. If i could go back, i would have opted for the stealth version (which i believe are meant to be a little bit more quite than the standard).

I’ve had it 11 months now and it still works like the first day i got it. Keys feel fantastic, with a satisfying click and a nice key distance. A month back i did the ultimate stupid thing and spilt the watery bit of pot noodle on it. I disconnected it and opened the back, which was actually quite hard to take off, it has 9 screws or something. I dried out the circuit board above and below with a hair-dryer and left it to dry overnight. Next morning it worked perfectly again. Wouldn’t swap this baby for any other keyboard.

The backlighting is a great help when gaming in the dark to avoid annoying reflections in your monitor but the main thing is the fantastic tactile feedback from the mechanical switches. The more reliable keystrokes and consistent feel allow you to sharpen your muscle memory and develop more fluid control in game. Only downside, as with all mechanical keyboards, its a little noisey, so maybe not the best option if you are working in an open plan office, rather than gaming in your cave.

I bought this keyboard on release, and its still going strong in 2019, i have had no issues at all with this keyboard apart from it attracting dust, but it’s easy to clean. The braided cable is really strong and the usb pass through is great for my mouse. Keys feel really responsive and the tactile feedback is great (i have the green switches).

Broke after 8 months due to a slight spill of water, and i mean the tiniest spillage.

Really good keyboard, the switch (razer’s own custom switch) is fantastic. The only 2 criticisms i’d give it are that(1) for a gaming keyboard, i would have liked a bigger space between the q and the tab keys so that i know where my hand is for gaming. In many other gaming keyboards there tends to be a small indentation/groove or additional space at the end of the tab key which allows you to know without looking what key you’re on. As it stands in some games where every second counts, if i move my left hand away for whatever reason i often need to look down at the keyboard to make sure i’m on the right keys as they all feel similar and are all around the same distance/shape (from a ‘feeling around’ perspective). (2) i’ve had a couple of rare instances of the keyboard spamming a key despite it not being pressed. The last instance where this happened was where the keyboard was acting as though the ‘f’ key was constantly pressed, despite it not being. I removed the key cap and checked the switch wasn’t stuck or pressed down, and it wasn’t, but the keyboard was still spamming the f key. Unplugged and plugged in the keyboard, same thing. Restarted windows and it all worked fine again. I don’t know what the issue was, whether it was a keyboard issue or software issue or windows issue, but fortunately this very rarely ever happens (twice in about 3 months of use).

What an amazing keyboard and price, cannot go wrong with razer and those mechanical switches.

Fantastic keyboard, really responsive for fast typers. Mapable macro keys and remapable funtion keys to give you the best variety to meeet you needs. They could be gaming, editing video/photos or even a writer. Everyone can benefit from a keyboard that is as great as this one. The ports on the side (usb and 2x 3. 5mm) mean you can run headphones in to the side of your keyboard giving one less cable running over your desk.

Sounds like a savage machine gun. Looks like a glowing spaceship.

After having my old qpad blue switch keyboard met an untimely death by hot chocolate i went through a couple of other mechanical keyboards unhappy i realised there was a cheaper version of my blackwidow chroma keyboard which i use at home and instantly snapped this up. It performs exactly the same as the more expensive chroma version with the same razer green clicky switches (basically cherry blues), it works flawlessly and i can’t tell much difference between these and the cherry blue switches. Now blue switches are not to everyones taste but i use this keyboard at work where i do a lot of typing (i’m a software engineer, more specifically i design/build the infrastructure for online shops and business critical web applications) and the blues are more suited to typing and i would say that the razer green clickly switches are a good balance between browns and blues. The keyboard is exactly the same as it’s more expensive chroma version the only difference being you can’t change the led colours (including individual keys) on this version where you can on the chroma. If anyones looking to buy the chroma but doesn’t care about it only having green leds i suggest considering this one first. The keyboard itself upholds the great build quality reputation that razer has earned and i don’t think anyone could fault the build quality itself, the only gripe i do have with this keyboard is the material the enclosure is made out of, it picks up finger prints way too easily, i can literally go wash my hands and touch the keyboard and theres fingerprint marks on it. For a keyboard where your touching it constantly it’s kind of annoying but not something i can’t live with (my old qpad had the same issue). I also had an issue with the software after having to reformat my computer but after contacting the razer support team we were able to fix it after several emails back and forth between the support representative, their software development team and myself, i wasn’t expecting that. For such a big company i was expecting the usual ‘have you tried turning it on/off, reinstalling, etc. ‘ and not actually having the development team look into log files of my computer.

After having a not working ‘9’. The keyboard was switched in no time and my son (16 years of age) has been (mis)using it since. The lights give it a special effect. They key have a different feel and noise and he loves it.

These keyboards hardly need reviewing anymore. If you’re looking to buy one you probably already know how good they are. The build quality is fantastic and they’re a pleasure to use. They feel lovely and are incredibly responsive. They have options for extra key bindings and the audio in/out and the usb slot on the side is very helpful. The only drawbacks i would mention for this keyboard are a) the price is very high for a keyboard and although they are amazing, this could be considered a bit steep. B) these keyboards are very sensitive to liquids. I had one in the past that completely died after my girlfriend accidentally splashed a couple of drops of red wine on it. Conclusion: if you like high quality things which are a pleasure to use, look the part and perform well then this is for you.

Picking this up on black friday for £75 i was chuffed. I’ve had a number of keyboards over the years but as a gamer using non gaming keyboards i find that ‘awsd’ keys seem to go before not too long. I have high hopes that i’ll not have the same problem using the razer. This particular model has the usb and audio jack points on the right side, something i’ve found very helpful (my pc is mounted up on the wall) so now usb changes are a lot easierhaving not used a mechanical keyboard before i didn’t know how it would sound. I myself love it, but being in a small flat with a wife and son it can get annoying for them so my pc time has been cut until everyone is in bed. (in another room) – i would suggest going into a shop and find any mechanical board if you are thinking of making the switch ((no pun intended) before buying one, simply to have a look and feel for the style. Lights, i’m not fussed either way but it does look great in a geeky sort of way. One thing i will say, i don’t like a keyboard to try and do too much.Media keys and all the other things some do.

Great keyboard, been using it for a couple of years now and still works excellently. Keys feel pleasant, pressure is just to my liking and the clicking is very satisfying, although fairly loud if that kind of thing annoys you or people you share the same space with. Can ghost pretty well, can’t find a combo of keys that wouldn’t work without using my both my hands on every key i can reach. Even survived a cup of coffee spilt on it, and my friend regularly spills water all over his and just leaves it over a radiator for a few days and it still works perfectly too.

Really glad i decided to go with this keyboard. I was a bit skeptical at first as to whether a mechanical keyboard really makes a difference over a traditional membrane one. I’ve owned previous razer gear and have been impressed (proud owner of a naga 2014) however this being my first mechanical keyboard i was blown away by the quality and feel of the product. The keys feel responsive and are a real pleasure to type with, and synapse works beautifully with both my keyboard and mouse. Honestly the best keyboard i have ever owned, if you’re on the fence about buying it. Just do it, you won’t regret it.

The noise is beyond fantastic. Seems ironic you end up paying for what used to be standard (mechanical keys) – but my god is it worth if if you type alot. As a coder (not a gamer as this is mainly marketed at) – i love it – and can use for hours without issue. Click, clacking away is how it should be done. And of course – you can’t really beat razor gear in terms of build quality etc. Usb port is a nice touch, as are the mic and headphone extensions built into the side of the keyboard. Version with the number pad is a must if your used to a traditional keyboard and moving to this.

Been using this for about a year now and it is faultless. The feel of the mechanical keys has made me confident i’ll never go back to a standard keyboard. It’s quite heavy and very sturdy, no problems with this. The green keys are also a great touch. I love this for typing, but it is quite noisy so if you have your keyboard in a busy room, take that into consideration.

The razer blackwidow ultimate is my first gaming keyboard so my frame of reference is less than comprehensive. However, this is undoubtedly an excellent keyboard and i’ve been loving it since it was delivered. I went with the blackwidow ultimate 2014 because at the time of purchase both the blackwidow chroma and the blackwidow ultimate stealth 2014 (which would have been my first choice) were significantly more expensive. The keys feel great, the ports on the side are useful, the lighting looks great. My only real criticisms are that the finish makes the surface somewhat prone to dirt and the clicky keys are not to my taste (though i realise that is purely a personal preference). Well worth a buy for anyone in the market for a gaming keyboard.

This keyboard takes a little bit of time to adjust to, but after that it’s fantastic. The keys might be a bit too loud/clicky for some, but i really like it.

The keyboard is nice, but one of the key is flickering and some times the light stop working. I send por a exchange but doesn’t give me a choice to do so only to exchange for something that i don’t need, they offer me the full amount returned or a amazon vouchers for that value, to be honest i will be very happy if they offer me a new keyboard as exchange but i don’t have that choice. If i wonted to pay for a new one the price will increase by £30 more for a used one at £99. And i wasn’t prepare for pay the difference. So i have to cancel my return. The keyboard is nice but only have a minor problem with the light but the key is working fine.  razer blackwidow ultimate 2014 mechanical gaming keyboard (usb, fully programmable with 5 macro keys).
