Canon 14XEF II 1 – Look out for detail

This little device is designed to add a bit more range to canon’s range of ‘l’ telephoto lenses. I bought this together with my first l lens (a 70-200 f4 l is) and am very impressed. I have it hooked up to a canon 400d so even without the extender the 70-200 lens gives me up to 320mm focal length due to the crop factor – a very useful level of magnification. With the extender i get up to 448mm of focal lengthi can’t see any change in image quality in using the extender – with my 70-200 the images are so sharp and the colours and amazing with or without the extender. I can’t tell the difference yet i gain a great deal of extra reach in terms of focal length. Build quality is very high, along similar lines to the other l telephoto lenses with its white exterior and weather sealing. Using the extender will mean your lens effectively becomes slower. So for my 70-200 f4 the maximum aperture with the extender is f5. A minor drawback for such a useful gadget.
Delivered and performed as expected.
Excellent quality commercial standard images with my 300 & 600 canon prime lenses. Still using it regularly after 7 years.
It does what it says on the box – extends the focal length by 1. 4i use it with a canon 400d and a canon 70-200 f4l, so it extends the range to 280 at f5. You can’t really tell there’s extra glass in the way either, which is impressive especially given how good the canon l lens is. The only problem is that without an image stabilised lens, it is pushing the ability to take a steady shot hand-held, especially if you are on relatively slow shutter speeds. In mediocre light i sometimes find that sports photos are better taken without the extender and then cropped rather than with the extender. It isn’t a problem in good light or if you are using a rest. The real answer, of course is to get an is lens. Speaking of which – not all lens fit the extender – you need to check first that whatever lens you have does work with it.
4x converters this has got to be the best to match with the right canon lens. It is permanently fixed to my 500mm f4. I do not notice any loss in iq.
A very high quality addition to my canon equipment, especially in combination with my 300mm f/4 l zoom. Super images and perfect functionality.

Excellent.
This is an excellent addition to supplement canon’s compatible l lenses. It enables those of us who don’t own the high-end canon super lenses to achieve good quality extra reach. Some of the more recent canon cameras feature quality, low noise, high iso performance and this means that the loss of an f-stop when using the extender does not matter. The extender performs very well in conjunction with the reasonably priced canon 400mm f5. Generally, at least some support is desirable for the best results. As is well documented, this lens is very portable and virtually a must have for the photography of birds and wildlife with or without the extender. Obviously, the extender/lens combination will not match a very expensive super telephoto canon lens but i think it will be more than good enough for the majority of photographers. For reference, i attach a squirrell photograph using the extender and 400mm lens mentioned above shot at 1/250, f8 & iso800.
Item arrived very promptly, box rather battered but this may be because it was placed directly into a transit bag without additional protection. Item as described but no warranty card. However, would recommend because amazon customer service is generally very good.
4x extender is designed to provide that extra few mm of focal length when distance is the challenge. I bought it to add-on to the canon 100-400mm zoom l series f5. 6 lens and it works as the canon spec says it should. It doesn’t fit my canon 70-300mm ef lens. Of practical importance, its use is associated with a loss of 1 stop, f5. 6 to f8, and this is significant because any stop higher (higher number) than f5. Putting this accessory to a f5. 6 lens (or higher) will necessitate manual focus.
Ordered, goods arrived next day as described, excellent.
When used in partnership with a canon prime lens there is no visible loss of image quality. The added 200 mm focal length it gave when added to my 500mm telephoto comes in veryuseful when photographing birds and small mammals. It’s build quality is excellent there is nosearching when autofocusing. An relatively inexpensive way of increasing the focal length of aprime lens.

Neat little way of boosting the range of your l-glass. I’ve actually owned the 2x extender as well and to be honest never really got on with that. I had sharpness issues and focusing problems, which i seem to be free of with the 1. 8 and you don’t really loose much, if anything, especially on a tripod. If you want added reach on something large and expensive like canon’s range of super telephoto lenses, this is a cheap way of not having to spend a couple of grand more on more expensive glass. 8 it makes it a 420mm f/4, which as i said on a tripod, has virtually no noticeable loss in apparent sharpness, and not much in aperture to boot. It weighs virtually nothing as well, meaning you simply won’t notice it added to your camera bag.
