Sigma 120-400mm f4 : had this lens works very on my d7100 and and

Lens arrived on time undamaged. Have been out on a few trips and found image quality good. Knew from fellow photographers that the lens was heavy but did not appreciatee the weight. Worth living with that and planning accordingly. Will def need support for most shoots. Still to try aviation / airshow photos to try out free hand on stabiliser 2 setting.

Considering the cost of this lens it is a very good buy. I have several great shots of red kites using this lens. However it has its limitations, it needs to be stopped down to f8 to get sharp images. It’s focusing is a little slow and the contrast is quite poor in low light conditions but if you work within these limitations you can get good shots. I am using a nikon d800 so it is a big ask for a budget lens and this lens performs admirably.

Owner is yet to use the full range of this lens but rates it thus far.

Still getting used to this lens. I’ve found it really needs support, i’m using a monopod, because my hands shake too much without it. It really is a heavy beast and will take it’s toll on your hands and also neck as you carry it around. Something i discovered, when carrying it around connected to the camera round my neck, you have to hold it somewhere, and the best place is the handle. So one hand helping to support it there you can’t help nudging the focus ring as you walk along. Then what happens is when you turn it on the auto-focus seems to just drop out. It only happens if you accidentally nudge the focus ring. I found switching the af/m buttons on the lens or camera made no difference to get it back on, i had to partially un-mount the lens, then it would give the reassuring beep as it acquired focus again. Other than that it’s a pretty good lens. The images are a little grainy and soft, and as with most digital cameras you need some software to do your ‘processing’, sharpen the images a little, take out some noise.

Delivered on time and is exactly what i wanted. I have said all i want to say on this but have to write more because the system demands it.

Decided on this lens as it fitted perfectly with what i wanted to photograph (wildlife and airshows) also my budget isn’t that of a rich man lol. Well i can safely say this lens is superb, the clarity is fantastic and zoom perfect if a little slow. For a lens of this length you really can’t go wrong for the money. If i take photography further then i may upgrade and find a whole new world with much more expensive lens’s but for not this is absolutely spot on. I shall try and upload some images that i took at the biggin hill airshow to show you just how good this lens is. I for one would defo buy this lens again.

I have had this lens since march 2009 and i can it was one of the best buys i have made. The quality of the lens construction is first rate and the results of the pictures are first class, the only down side of the lens is the weight, but that’s the trade off with a well built lens,as its the with all other quality lens. But with the sigma you only pay half the price of the canon 120-400mm and with all the reviews that i have seen in the camera magazine it is as good as the canons and they recommend buying it unless you are a camera snob. So grab your self a bargain and buy yourself one.

I’ve only managed to use this lens around three or four times since getting it and already it is proving to be one of the best buys i have made for ages. As both my wife and i are avid bird watchers, this is starting to come in useful for general use, and it also focusses at around 1. 6 metres which makes it great for garden photography as well. It took a little getting used to in terms of handling, however seems to be good definition even at wide apertures, and even better at something like f11 at 400mm. Used it on a boat recently and was well impressed.

I have had this lens for about a year now, and it is a lovely piece of equipment. The lens compares well with 3 other contenders for this range:canon 100-400 lsigma 150-500sigma 50-500all of these lens are pin sharp, this one and the canon 100-400l are arguably the sharpest, the canon though is twice the price of the sigma, and does not come with a hood nor tripod collar. It scores over the 150-500 and 50-500 by being slightly ‘faster’ – it is f4 not f5 at the widest and f5. All of these lenses are heavy when compared to typical 70-300mm lenses (e. The tamron, which i also own). The sigma 120-400 benefits from optical stabilisation and hyper-sonic motor. The latter is particularly good, as the focussing ring can be used to override the auto focus without having to turn it on and off. The manual focus ring does not turn when the lens is auto-focussing. The optical stabilisation works well, it cuts in when you press the shutter button halfway down and you can see the difference through the viewfinder. Os consistently provides 3-4 stop advantage. The biggest advantage of this lens is the clarity of the pictures. 1 and f8 (i can detect no difference between them) – sharp as a prime lens, which is astounding at the price. The biggest disadvantage is the weight and size. The canon is slightly lighter, but only a small amount less (240g). The other two are heavier (the 50-500 significantly heavy). I have not had good results when using a teleconverter, i think my cheap one is not compatible, so i will think about the sigma 1.

I purchased this lens about a year ago and given the price (compared to similar lenses) it delivers superb quality images. I have used it mainly for motorsport and wildlife photography and it has never let me down regardless of the conditions. Yes, it is quite heavy but it is a 400mm lens after all and with the focal length you will need a mono/tri-pod to support it, i don’t think its meant to be hand-held despite having an optical stabiliser. It does also have 3 settings to help with panning / stabilising which helps get the right balance for the shots you want to take. There is also an auto / manual focus switch which is really handy to get the right focus for your subject(s). It would be great if they could make one with a wider aperture but unless you move into prime lens and have a massive budget then you cant go far wrong with this as a telephoto lens.

Great lens for the price, bit heavy, best on a tripod, however i have managed to get some good shots hand held.

Had this lens works very on my d7100 and and my d3300 af is very fast.

An excellent product and transactiom.

I bought this as an upgrade from sigma’s standard starter telephoto, 70-300, and have been using it for wildlife photography for the last three years. The hsm is audible but compared to standard af systems, much quieter. The image sharpness is impressive, though a little soft fully extended but that’s the compromise you get on any zoom lens that isn’t pro-level and pro-priced. I’ve never seen any sign of fringing or chromatic abberations in any of the images i’ve taken. Low light performance is great with the os system which works very effectively on two different settings depending how you are shooting portrait or landscape. For anyone worried about the weight of the lens, it’s worth bearing in mind that the canon 100-400 (£1200) is only about 300g lighter. All in all, a brilliant lens that i would highly recommend to anyone.

Purchased the sigma 120-400mm os on 7 day return, the lens gave good images at all lenths, is buit like a surface to air missile launcher and you need muscles like popeye to use it, good job it has the tripod mount which doubles as a carry handle, the most anoying thing is the optical stabilizer when it starts up it sounds like an old deisel engine trying to start on a very cold morning. Having said all that compared with canon 100- 400 is l price wise i still think it a good buy. I have to admit to returning it and purchasing the canon at over twice the price, but you get what you pay for.

Very pleased with the results.

I am very much an amateur photographer and like to photograph the birds in my garden and take portraits from a distance, so this looked to be a worthwhile addition to my kit. I am pleased to say i have achieved some wonderful results with this lens. I didn’t find it as heavy as some and enjoy using it very much. Easy to work with and a good carry case makes transporting it easy.

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM for Nikon Digital and Film SLR Cameras : Excellent service, excellent lens.

Beautiful lens, it definatley is a 1st class lens. Arrived quicker than quoted and i am really please with the results that it is producing. This is my second sigma lens and so far i have not been disappointed with any.

I have owned this canon fit lens for about seven years now. I am very pleased with the images i get from it. I have found it hunts whilst focusing in grass or trees. I tend to use manual focus 10% of the time because of this slight problem. I would not say it is a fault. I find as long as i have something solid to rest against i have no need for a tripod. The finger grooves on the tripod mount are a little tight on the fingers but still allow room for my small hands. If you have large hands this might be a problem if you want to use it hand heald. The auto focus is almost silent and works well. Just a small niggle like all sigma lenses the matt black coating on the lens body is hard to clean but easy to get dirty.

I have tested the lens on my canon eos 550d camera, being a cropped sensor, it is the equivalent of roughly 180-600 mm, i have had pin sharp images, hand held at the longest setting of 1/125 sec. At the shorter end at 1/30 sec. Thanks to the image stabilizer, a great lens.

See also the review by barrowfordian (the first one, above)together with my comments then. I bought this baby in november 2009 and from delivery there was no other lens for me. Today, 4th jan 2014 after some 20,000 action shots i give you the good bits: although not a canon l series lens, at better than half the price, it provides at least 95% of the performance. Great; sharpness great: down side. Haven’t found one yet and use it mostly in the 300 to 400mm focal length ranges. I find that f9 is its sweetest spot.

I am an amateur wildlife photographer who has always used canon lenses on my 400d camera. When i needed a lens with more reach the cost of canon’s lenses meant either a second hand or a look for an alternative. The sigma 120-400 had very mixed reviews – especially with regards the lens full open – but what persuaded me to buy the sigma was looking at the quality of photos on some of the better known photo sharing sites. The lens arrives in a well padded lens case. Also included is a lens hood and caps. As you can see from the photos of the lens there is a very useful tripod mount included; this also makes an excellent hand-hold for carrying the lens. Two straps are also provided – one for the lens, and one for the case (the case one is a little short, but quite usable). Make no mistake – this is a big lens. With the hood attached and mounted on a 400d camera it extends to 41 cm (16 inch) but it is also very well designed. On the left hand side are three buttons: one is a lock to prevent ‘lens creep’ when the lens is carried pointing down, one is a choice for auto or manual focus, and the third selects the optical stabiliser (os) allowing hand held photography at 400mm.

My first big lens and its brilliant. Dont know why i waited so long to buy it but i’m glad i did. I use it for aircraft photography at airshows etc and cant fault it. I would really recomend this lens.

This sigma is well built for a mid range lens. I’m really surprised how good is the definition even at 400mm. The os is effective, and it works well also with a short shutter speed (some other antishake systems produce blurred images when used coupled with short speed). Of course it is not a professional lens (both my 500mm and 150mm sigma prime are better in every way), but for a light and very unexpensive lens like this, the results are stunning.

I bought this lens for use on a nikon d300s, and it certainly performs very well, including the auto focus function. Compared with the genuine nikon lens, price for price, it represents very good value for money. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of glass in it, and it does feel very heavy after a few hours carting it around.

This is an excellent lens, light weight for its size, easy to use. No problems in any of the range. However as with all os systems – this must be switched off before camera is switched off (this direct from sigma through email). This gives an excellent quality picture throughout range.

Hi, i bought this lens 18months ago. . And never regreted it, this lens looks + feels total-class. And i can shoot hand held at 400mm and 99% the images are razor-sharp.

I have owned and used this lens (on a canon 50d) since late 2009 (call it a retirement present)i was in 2 minds – this or the canon l equivalent. Well then, perhaps not quite as sharp as the canon lens but the sharpness difference is not worth the price difference. One hand held photograph that i took included the back view of a cricket umpire and was taken from the boundary. When i enlarged the image at home i was absolutely amazed to discover that the time on the umpires wrist watch was a clear and as sharp as could be. Unfortunately i couldn’t read the name of the watch maker. Also a shot that included a chicken mesh fence from 150 yards at least , revealed both the mesh and the twists in the metal wire that were necessary to maker it. Yes i am 100% pleased with this gem of a long lens. I have given it 5 stars because i couldn’t give it 4 3/4 (5 for the canon l) note the camera is now on its third shutter mechanism.

Sharp clear photos ,must be the best for the price. +usual brilliant amazon service, very pleased. I use with monopod as quitelumpy.

I have had no feed back so have rated it average.

This lens is so good, i use a canon 5dmkii with this beast on the end of it. I try to shoot at f8 which is it’s best setting. I do a lot of model shots outdoors and believe it or not i use this lens in preference to my canon 28-105 lens. The image stabilisation is excellent and my pictures are pin sharp.

Very nice lens and very much cheaper than the canon equivalent. It has taken some very good wildlife shots on my canon 450d. Only downside is the weight.
