Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2 – From a professional photographer

I managed to get this lens minty new £450. 8, a nice weight & solidly built. A great walk around lens, great for shady woods.

Without even considering myself as the great connoisseur of photography (in fact, the opposite), may i say that i’m just a regular guy who, like many others out there, wants to get the best of his lenses, trying to overcome technical, financial and other restrictions applied in advance. And here, just to speak a bit proudly, we the photographers should probably congratulate ourselves from to time to time because of the overall photographic effort we make, no matter what the artistic work we succeed (and periodically present) is. You see, it’s the trip that’s worth more than the destination. Also, because of the existence of this creative agony we feel when, against the context of a usually not helping everyday reality, we choose to hit the thing with the best photoshot we can (now, what’s more to say about it. I started my own photographic trip with a nikon d300s body and a nikkor 18-200 f/3. Even now, three years later, i think of this combo as a stylish start with good specs provided: it lets you do the work easily which is fair enough. I confess that if i was going to continue in this pattern of thought, meaning shooting mainly outdoors and under the strong greek sunlight, i don’t think i’d be looking for something better. The good nikkor 18-200mm is performing well and, because of this, it can be considered as one of the most popular, well-selling, value-for-money nikon lenses. On the other hand, it seems that tricky problems start to exist from the moment in which someone wants to shoot indoors, especially with no-flash settings on, and, to make things worse, without using a tripod (camera handheld). Well, in that case, i think he has to understand that things are specific: he definetely needs a fast and accurate lens. I saw it happening in practice, (actually, in some situations, things were much more demanding than i had originally thought – so, in addition, i bought two primes as well, but that’s another story to tell) and realized that upgrading my equipment was a one-way road to walk. And there, just there, all those fancy desires of every serious or, at least, wannabe photographer make their appearance for an enhanced, classy lenses formula.

I am thrilled with the product and it was delivered by courier on time. The packaging was a bit flimsey for a £1k lens it had too much space to rattle around. To my mind it was only the manufactureres packaging that saved it.

That is a good lens, but my teacher said that is not suits my camera(nikon d750). I m going to refund this one, and going to buy the right one.

I’ve drooled over this lens for a while now, read all the reviews reports etc, but was always out of reach. Finally was able to afford it and upgraded from my 18-70 f3:5 dx. To say that i was blown away by the results is an understatement, the handling and feel on the d300 is so right. Yes its slightly heavier and bulkier but it feels right and robust in the hand. Would definitely recommend this to anyone thinking of upgrading. This lens will be permanently on my camera for most of my shooting. Great lens – get it if you can.

____________________this is a review from 2005, when all nikon digital slrs were ‘dx’ format. If you’re looking for the ‘fx’ or ‘full-frame’ equivalent of this lens, then you need the nikon af-s nikkor 24-70mm f/2. 8g ed lens, though this lens outperforms it slightly in reach, and is less prone to damage. I’m keeping the review here for historic purposes. ____________________if you bump into a press photographer who uses nikon, chances are that they have this lens on their camera. If not, they probably have it in their bag. Nikon digital slrs multiply the focal length of the lens by 1. 5 compared to film, so, in old 35mm terms, this lens is equivalent to 24-82, which is by far the most useful range for general work. This lens is aimed fair and square at the premium professional market. 8 constant maximum aperture is fast enough for most light conditions, and makes for excellent differential focus. The controls are smooth, and the overall impression is one of sturdy workhorse reliability. In designing this lens exclusively for digital, nikon have accepted that we now require far greater sharpness across the entire picture than we did previously. However, this sharpness comes at a price — this lens is not suitable for 35mm film photography, and anyone still using a dslr with, say, an f5 or f6 will need to get the more expensive and less optimised 17-35 if they want to use it on both cameras.

 • Nikon 17 -55 mm

 • An excellent lens / buy it

 • Five Stars

I bought this as part of my wedding photography business. The optics are great and produce lovely crisp images. The only complaint is that the lens is heavy.

Perfect condition and a great saving over brand new.

Having bought a 18-200 nikkor lens for my d7200, i was distinctly unimpressed by its low light abilities. It felt strangled, as did i when using it. It should have been a great all-purpose lens, compact with a fantastic range. But it didn’t cut the mustard. Enter the nikkor 17-55mm f2. Now suddenly the camera is far more useful. Its built like a brick, solid and water resistant, which matches the body.

Even without the vr it delivers on all front. If crisp images is what you are looking for, then this is certainly a lens worth considering. This is my work horse when shooting weddings and it has yet to let me down.

Great, good contrast and sharp lens. Excellent and helpful comms from seller too.

The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55 mm 1:2.8G IF-ED

High brightness, captivating Bokeh, impressive sharpness: The 3.2 x zoom lens in Nikon DX format has a focal length range of 17 – 55 mm and impresses with a continuous light intensity of 1:2.8. Both professional photographers and committed amateur photographers offer exceptional image quality and design flexibility. Perfect for mood portraits, stunning landscape shots and more. The excellent image performance is achieved by a high-quality optical construction made of 14 lenses in 10 groups.

Three ED glass lenses (extra-low dispersion) are used to minimise chromatic aberration and three aspherical lenses for a highly effective reduction of opening errors and distortion. Internal focusing provides a close-up focusing distance of 0.36 m (35mm focal length).

In addition to manual focusing in M mode, it allows you to switch between manual and automatic focusing (M/A mode), while the auto focus operates practically silently thanks to the silent wave motor (SWM).

Inspired by the game with depth of field and enchanted with Bokeh: Thanks to its focal length range of 17-55 mm (corresponds to 25.5 – 82.5 mm in the 35mm format) and its continuous lens speed of 1:2.8, this all-round lens in DX format opens up a variety of motif options. It offers a picture angle of 79° in the wide angle position up to 28° 50′ at maximum telephoto focal length. The smallest aperture is 22. With a close-up focusing distance of 0.36 m (from the sensor level and 35 mm focal length), the lens achieves a maximum imaging scale of 1:5 and thus allows dramatic perspectives even at short recording distances.

High-quality optical system

Brilliance and detail in Nikkor quality: the super wide angle zoom lens has an elaborate construction consisting of 14 lenses in 10 groups. Three extra low dispersion (ED glass) lenses are used to ensure sharp images and minimise chromatic aberration. In addition, three aspherical lenses contribute to the highly effective correction of distortion. In line with the high performance of the optical system, the nine rounded slats of the aperture create a gentle blurring, which provides a wonderful bokeh especially during close-ups and makes backgrounds look even more natural.

Internal focusing (IF) with fixed tube length

Skin-close approach to subjects: thanks to internal focusing (IF), only a relatively small group of lenses in the lens are moved inside for distance adjustment. The compact and lightweight construction of this technology allows a faster, quieter and energy-saving automatic focusing with a fixed tube length and a low close-up distance of 0.36 m (from sensor level and at focal length 35 mm).

Auto focus with silent wave motor (SWM) and modes M/A and M

Almost silent focusing: thanks to the silent wave motor (SWM), the focus system works precisely, quickly and above all almost inaudible. In addition to the M mode for manual focusing, the lens has the Nikon exclusive M/A mode, which allows you to manually engage at any time without delay.

Good lenses don’t produce good photographers. With this caveat in mind, this lens is absolutely superb. Fantastic when stopped down. This is simply the best mid range zoom for dx cameras. It is a fast pro-zoom great for low light photography. Only criticism is lack of vr, guess due to this being produced in 2003, when vr didnt exist for nikon lenses. The design has not been updated since then. Cons – can be stiff when brand new but eases with use.

Its good, i bought mine about 11 years ago & optically this is still a good lens even with high mp sensors, for how long im not sure as s & t have some very competent dx lenses whilst nikon is yet to respond. Also the price new is too high. Anyway, its a fair size lens as to be expected with f2. 8 ‘pro glass’, its very well built with a degree of sealing. I would prefer if it focussed internally particularly at this price. The zoom ring is at the back which you get used to quite easily & some people actually prefer with both controls rotating smoothly. The images are very sharp, theres slight barrel at the wide end as expected with wide zooms which is easily corrected. As this is fairly minimal, i often pass on correcting it. Into the sun, flare produces artefacts, sometimes in a good way and this can be controlled with the fairly large lens hood.

Very sharp, and a excellent walk around lens.

This was an expensive purchase for me. . All i can say to anyone thinking of purchasing this lens is. It is a joy in every way & all the positive reviews you have read about it are true, it is indeed for the serious photographer to be sure & yes , it is quite heavy but as others before me have remarked , it delivers . & i must also say , it gives you a new found confidence. The last thing i will add about this great piece of glass is, it really is mr flexible , you could, at a pinch, do an entire wedding with just this one lens.

Every one needs this lens on apsc.

As good as a 50mm prime throughout the range. . This is my most used lens. Be it concert, portrait, landscape. Yes, it is a lot of money but by golly you will not put a better zoom (or possibly prime lens) on your nikon dx body. Have used it on a d300 and d7100 and it sings.

135 picture angle equivalent of a 25.5-82.5mm zoom

Everything about this steel monster is fantastic and the price reflects this. Without echoing what the other reviewers have said, i would just recommend that you only need this if your doing professional photography or intend to use your equipment in adverse conditions. For occasional shooting, you’re probably better off going with the tamron 17-50mm 2. 8, which is a quarter of the price. I’ve owned both lenses and there is little difference in sharpness, especially when stopped down, though at the wide end the nikon outperforms the tamron and appears to have better contrast and colour reproduction. The nikon smokes the tamron in terms of focusing speed.

I am disappointed in the photos i get by using this lens. I have tried various settings on my camera. Maybe i haven’t found the correct one yet.

This lens came out in 2003, and is still in production by nikon. Its still in production for a reason, its that good. To compare it, its the dx equivalent of the fx 24-70mmthe down side if you buy one new its expensive £1300-£1500. The good news is, because its been out for so long there are plenty of excellent condition used ones on sale for between £400 and £500 on the usual web sites. 8, and amazingly so by f4 (edge to edge), the autofocus is super fast (fastest of any lens i own). Colour rendition is excellent throughout. If you are into it, the bokeh is very good, but not as good as some sigma lens (matter of preference)this is a lens that all nikon dx camera owners should look to have, but if you ask me, i would not buy a new one. I’ve used this on a d5100 and d7200.

I am a professional photographer and earn my living 100% from photography. Let me explain that control of your depth of field gives arguably the most important impact on your images. 8 aperture is so important on your main lens. Yes it is true that certain pro wedding shooters go even further and use prime f 1. But i personally prefer the convince of a zoom lens. And it is just a personal preference. I can shoot in dim lit churches with this lens without having to resort to my 1.

Given so many reviews for this ‘old’ nikon 17-55mm f2. 8g af-s dx if-ed, i thought i should first explain that the one missing star is due to its being slightly inferior compared with a prime lens. Apart from that, it’s an excellent lens, and its practicality compensates some slight weaknesses. I bought this lens for my d500. 5 factor makes its focal range nearly ideal for travel and street photography. I took it on my trip to paris last week, bringing only my nikon 70-200 f4g vr as backup. , the opera paris) and outdoor (no need to mention). Until finishing the trip, i didn’t touch the 70-200 and all the time this 17-55 was on my d500. The photo quality is totally satisfactory. It gives me peace in mind that when going on a trip i can just bring this 17-55mm with my d500 and i don’t have to bring with me different lenses unless it’s a trip with certain shooting plan. This is what i mean practicality. Recently, i used this 17-55mm for an indoor social dance event.

Really really good all rounder lens. Use it all the time to shoot weddings. I could even say that is all you need at a wedding.
