SAMYANG 8 mm F3 – Nice quality product

Does everything that you would expect from a fisheye lens; what (pleasantly) surprised me was how good this lens is both optically and in terms of its ae interface with my nikon d7000. I purchased as i could not justify the expense of the nikon alternative but i have no complaints. Focusing is manual but, with the incredible depth of field available with any extreme wide angle lens, this is almost irrelevant. For most shots focusing at infinity is all that is required. Slightly slower than the nikon 10. 5mm lens but for my purposes, this isn’t critical. I am delighted with this lens which represents excellent value for money.

This is my first fisheye lens, for use with an eos 700d, so don’t really know what to expect. I would have liked autofocus and auto aperture, but this is fully manual, just like the old days. I would have liked the ‘canon ef 8-15mm f/4l fisheye usm lens’, but for at least £720, even for a used one, it was more than i could justify for my hobby. Unlike the three canon is stm zoom lenses i have, 10-18mm, 18-135 and 70-300mm, there is no autofocus or stabilisation on this, but they are hardly necessary with such a lens. I am still getting used to it, particularly the exposure control, with the manual aperture. I find a good setting is f8, focused midway between 1. 5m and infinity, with the camera set to ae or av. I suppose this is more about artistic effect that technical precision and it provides an interesting effect. The pictures compare this fisheye with the 10mm wide angle.

Very difficult (nigh on impossible) to get pristinely crisp professional quality photographs, however it’s such a great lens for point and shoot pictures and for the price you can’t knock it really.

I bought this lens to marry to my infrared converted nikon d90 and have never regretted that decision. 5 – not a lot of difference in the ‘real world’ of usage. 5mm not 8mm like this beauty. Scared by the thought of manual focussing??.No need to be with this super lens. There is a chip which enables the rangefinder in the nikon version and at 8mm, once focus is found, everything is in focus. Colours are faithfully reproduced too. I have not found flare to be a big problem – either put the light source in the frame or take it out altogether, don’t dither. I did have the nikon version until i got sick of the so-called lens cap slipping off and exposing the bulbous front element. The cap for this does have lugs which hold it tight. Coming in at half the price of the nikon the samyang is an absolute steal. I also use the samyang 14mm full frame lens with a nikon d750 – could not be bettered.

After much research and reading up about this lens i decided to take the plunge and purchase it. The item was sent with guaranteed next day delivery with the courier citylink. The item, ordered thursday for ‘guaranteed delivery’ on friday, eventually arrived on saturday after much chasing. Now this clearly didn’t meet the guarantee so on friday after waiting in i decided to email amazon. I cannot fault them for their excellent customer service and help in tracking the parcel. Citylink however had terrible customer service and their tracking of the product was terrible. Amazon helped resolve the problem and eventually got the product to me a day late but at least i got it. Now, moan about the courier over. It attached, granted with a very small amount of force, slightly more than usual but nothing damaging in the slightest. At first i didn’t think the lens was working even though i had set my d7000 correctly with the non-cpu lens data input correctly. The reason for the lens not communicating with my camera and the camera showing an aperture error was because you have to set the lens aperture to f/22. Now this may sound strange but it does work. This then allows (only cameras witty the functionality of inputting non-cpu lens data) control of the aperture and shutter speed through the camera. Focusing is done with the focus ring but for someone who’s camera is always set to manual focus on the body, this is not a problem. The lens focus is more difficult to get used to as you see more image in the viewfinder as it is very wide so seeing detail using the viewfinder is harder than with a standard lens. Basically, the infinity logo is where you turn the focus ring to when you want a wide shot – eg. Landscapes or things far from the lens. – and turn the lens clockwise to get focus on things nearer the lens.

I have been using this for virtual tours only and i would highly recommend this product for the ease of use and value for money.

A brilliant lens for my canon 550d. A tip to achieve full image focus, set focus length to 1. 5 m and app f8 in good light conditions.

What a superb product this is does exactly what it said it does fits my camera exactly.

Perfect for cropped sensored cameras.

I’ve owned the canon version and the nikon version and both have been great. Extremely sharp for the price.

Interesting , fun and once you understand its full manual, then it just gets better.

Not bad at all but not quite a canon. But to be fair it’s a 1/3 of the price so i would say it’s pretty good for the price.

Very good lens for a nikon owner like me, amateur, on a limited budget. Nothing comes near it at the price and the internal chip (only on the nikon version), makes it easy. Here are the specifications for the SAMYANG 8 mm F3:

  • Make sure this fits
    by entering your model number.
  • Focal length: 8mm
  • Maximum aperture: F/3.5
  • CPU integrated
  • Focus type: MF (Manual Focus only)
  • Mount: Nikon

I was a little worried about this lens before i bought it, i had fancied a fisheye for years but couldn’t bring myself to part with the £600 or so for a cannon or sigma lens. I came across this after reading about it in a magazine and at first was a little worried about it being a manual lens. However, set the aperture to 8 and the focus to infinity and every single picture you take will be pin sharp. It works ok in very low light but really excells at wide open shots with foreground interest. It is very solid, well made and simple to use, the detachable hood is a bonus over the older model and the price is superb. This lens opens up a whole new world of photography, buy it.

Got this to replace my walimex, as it took a hit to the ground and chipped the front element. Great lens, fully manual, and offers little aberration and softness throughout the range. Great low price solution for extreme sports enthusiasts, or for photographers who just want a fun lens to use out and about. I’ve used mine at expos and for filming skaters in the past, and it works great for both. Joy of it being rectangular fisheye is it offers the huge width you expect, without the ‘stretching’ you’d find in – say a sigma 10-20mm. It offers a nice curved view of the world – and as i said, i basically bought this twice as my first when bye-bye.

The lens hood can appear in frame but the product is good and images clear and crisp. Very happy with all images taken so far. For the money defiantly recommended.

This is an amazing lens for the money. I use mine on a nikon but also on a sony a7r which makes manual focusing a doddle. Having said that, use this lens at f16 and focus almost at infinity and everything is in focus anyway. Not a lens to be overused but it can produce some super images. Just have to make sure that your feet aren’t in the frame sometimes :-).

Fits my canon 750d great and does the job for a lot cheaper than the other brands.

I really like this lens i usually use it for filming bmx you can get right up close to stuff. And for video in good light with a small aperture focus isnt a problem.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Good lens, but fully manual

  • Samyang 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye lens – Nikon fit

  • Nikon quality without the price tag

Using on my nikon d7100, great lens with endless possibilities. Not the sharpest but what do you expect from a budget fish eye, really enjoy shooting with it though, would definitely recommend.

Very good, and for a lens that you would not use everyday – a very good price.

I am absolutely in love with this lens. Don’t think twice about buying it, you will definitely be happy with the results. I use this with my nikon d5100 and have no complaints whatsoever. It’s also worth noting that while it doesn’t autofocus – you can use this lens with the camera on auto mode and it will select the appropriate iso, shutter speed and aperture. The only thing it won’t do is autofocus, which isn’t a problem as leaving it on infinity will probably suit most of your shots unless you are shooting something close up. I definitely recommend this lens. Very happy with my purchase.

I’m having so much fun with this lens. It’s very cheap compared with others but it is a great piece of equipment for anyone who wants to start playing around with fisheyes and wide angles.

Excellent lens, produces top quality images for a fisheye lens coupled to a dx camera.

Lens captures crisp clear images with relatively little loss of clarity towards the edges of the image. The infinite focal length makes this incredibly easy to use especially in dark environments. Its also worth noting that the lens is so large that you will probably need an external flash because the lens leaves a shadow at the bottom of the image.

Awesome product, cheap priceanyone looking to dive into fisheye photography needs this lens, very sharp and huge dof even at 3.

Quality glass and performance, but poorly sealed at the front, letting in humidity all too easily. Also not recommendable to be used on a full format camera since the camera will produce smaller images than usual that are somewhat distorded as well, filling only part of the frame (at least this is the case with my canon eos 6d mk2). Therefore i only use this lens on my cropped sensor cam, every now and then enjoying the fisheye experience.

Having already purchased a samyang 8mm lens in another fitting i had no qualms about buying this for my nikon system. A creditable piece of glass that gives an extremely wide angle of view that can be used to stunning effect. This is not a circular fisheye but can and does produce some creative distortion. (it can be removed in photoshop or similar package).

Will have some fun using this lens.

Love it gives a new perspective lots of fun.

Great lens for the money, the manual focus can be a bit of a faff in low light but i’ve been getting on fine with it and have been really pleased with the results from this lens.

I received this lens yesterday on time, as promised by the seller. The excitement to get it attached to my d5000 was immense. I just so happened to go out on a boat trip to an island 30 miles from civilisation, in the north atlantic and had my new lens with me. It took a few attempts to get the focus in order, but once i got the hang of it i managed to get some amazing photos. This is a complete manual lens, and takes great skill to perfect focus – but practice makes perfect. For a relatively ‘unknown’ brand, it delivers brilliant pictures – maybe not the sharpest compared to nikkor lenses, but for the price it is on the money. It feels nice and heavy; but the lens cover itself is flimsy, plastic and hardly stays on. You do get a lens pouch for it though, so that doubles up as armouri would recommend this to anyone who has had a fisheye lens on their wishlist for long enough but can’t quite commit to the more expensive brands, and also if you want to really get out there and master your manual focussing skills. I know i am going to have a lot of fun with this one.

If you want a lens for panoramic or 360 photography, just buy it. I’m absolutely blown away by the image quality and the stitching results are fantastic. I was hesitant at first but honestly, it’s a great lens. Don’t even think about buying the canon equivalent.

This high quality item was at a great price & delivered promptly .

I purchased this lens to film with my mates down at the skatepark and to create youtube videos. I use this lens on my canon 600d and it works perfect, great lens for the price and a great purchase.

Could not get along with this lens. It is manual focus and if you put on f22 you can’t see what you are taking as it is too dark. You have to snap away and then check photos on the computer. Saved up and bought the sigma fisheye.
