Canon EF 70-200 mm F/4 : Five Stars
Just a warning though, do not skimp on the filter you put on it. I had crazy ghosting issues with i think it was a hoya-pro. I went for a b&w protective filter in the end (just glass) to protect the front element, no problems since then.
After a year of using kit lenses i decided it was time to invest in better quality glass. And this lens fitted the bill perfectly. Super sharp, ultra quiet and very handsome, the 70-200 has proven to be excellent value for money. Comes with a canon bag and lens hood (as well as the front and rear lens caps). Not many negatives, but is a little heavier than say the ef 75-300mm f/4. 6 iii kit lens i was using (get a mount ring – makes a big difference). Bokeh is also very impressive. Remember that the f4 is really an outdoor/daylight lens, so if you want to shoot indoors, expect to pay another £450-500 for the f2. 8 (although the f4 manages fine with flash).
I had a canon 70-300mm “kit” lens when i bought the camera, but just could not get on with it, even though i tried hard to for some time. 2 problems,(1) if carrying it the lens has to be locked to the 70mm position or else it gradually extends much longer than this one, (easily forgotten),and even if you remember to do this you have to remember to unlock it for use. & (2), during zooming or focusing the barrel rotates, making the use of polarising filters (or i presume graduated nd filters)at best irritating, and realistically not practical. So after much deliberation i eventually got this lens, and oh wowa few test shots just of flowers in the garden showed what it’s capable of, the shots could be blown up to poster size and be more than perfectly acceptable, veins on the flowers individually standing out with a few dew drops showing i did’nt even know were there. This is on a “crop sensor body” not a 5d or equivalent. The colour saturation is also fantastic, and it puts another “l” lens, the 24 – 105mm, slightly in it’s shadow. I don’t think i have ever had a lens that so impressed me at the first try. For some reason the “bokeh” with this lens is slightly better than that of the 24 – 105 at the same settings, and it seems to have even better contrast, not very much, but a little. I will take as read those reviews that say how good the is is, yes you can hear it operate, (quietly), and i didn’t try to test it at low light levels, but indoor shots were fine at 1/60th about 80% of the time, (although canon only suggest you go down to 1/200th, i think that’s a bit cautious of them). Would i miss the extra 100mm of the kit lens?.
Current kit :canon 50def 50mm f/1. 4 prime lensi got this lens delivered today from amazon. I had been considering 2 lens, the canon ef 70-300mm is or canon ef 70-200mm l non-isthe canon ef 70-200mm l non-is has had some very impressive professional reviews where as i had some nagging concerns about the canon ef 70-300mm is (non-parfocal, rotating front element, no ftm, f-stop reduction when zoomed, loads of lens extension when zoomed)in the end i went for the canon ef 7-200mm l non-isi am one happy photographer. The quality of pictures i’m getting out of this lens is simply breathtaking. Being an l lens i expected quality, but my expectations have been exceeded as i’m getting pictures as good as some of the best i’ve managed to get using my 50mm prime lens, which is an impressive achievement for any zoom lens. I would have no hesitation in recommending this lens.
I took a long time to make up my mind to purchase this lens reading reviews left right and centre before taking the plunge, was i happy with my decision to buy?, indeed i was. Ok it is a heavy beast but so is the 5d mark 11 camera to which it is attached. I shall be using this lens for landscape and sports photography and weddings. I have ran a few shots since taking delivery and i am very impressed with the results, the bokeh is great and the weather sealing a bonus focusing is fast and quiet, even at my age (80s) i can handle its weight well though i did buy a better camera strap to help take the weight. If you want a top class lens buy this one you wont regret it.
This is a wonderful lens which can be used at full aperture with confidence. It is much smaller and lighter than the f2. 8 version, and this is appreciated after a long day. Its also a lot cheaper than the f4 with image stabilisation. Well engineered with fast quiet focus.
Takes awesome photos – amazon threw it over the back fence on delivery rather than leave with next door.
I bought this lens for my daughter & her photos are amazing.

I can’t rate this lens highly enough. The image quality is really something. I upgraded from a tamron vc 70-300mm which was good but no prize winner. The canon is so good because its; a) got great build quality b) delivers top of the range iq right through the range c) is pin sharp right through the range d) is light so you can carry it all day e) is so cheap for an l class lens. I didn’t buy the is version as it’s almost twice the price, and according to all the reviews i’ve read is no better in respect to iq so why waste another £400?. I also have the canon ef 24-105 f4l which does have is, but i hardly ever use it, and the image quality is not a patch on the 70-200f4l. For the past 2 months this lens has hardly been off my 5d, i love it.
Needing a general purpose lens and without the funds to buy a f2. Having been won over by a previous l series is lens i didn’t feel i was taking any sort of risk and expected quality. The lens delivered all my expectations. Well built and sturdy i wished i had bought one much earlier in my photographic “career”. What did catch my eye was the sharpness of the images produced, so sharp that they might cut you finger if you were not careful. This is the all purpose lens that everyone should have. The extra cost repays it’s self in quality. It’s just not worth going with cheaper imitations.
No wedding photographer or videographer should be without one. Produces the best images of all of my lenses with spectacular bokeh. Also worth considering the canon 135mm f2.
Some shots may need a tripod but still an excellent product. It is very light for an l series lens so wonderful for travel.
This is a great lens for the money. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to by a quality lens and has a limit on how much they can spend. The image quality is excellent, although it would really benefit from the image stabilisation that comes with the more expensive version. This is a fairly heavy lens and for anyone that is taking images from a static position i highly recommend that you also invest in the tripod mount ring, (there are some very good budget versions of this on amazon). For those like me who are taking wildlife shots and have to move around quite a lot, just be prepared for quite a lot of discarded images – but that is the nature of the game i’m afraid. Over all, great product at a great price.
Brilliant addition to my current set of lenses, the quality of the l series lenses is so much higher than the standard canon range of lenses, i chose this over the more expensive f2. 8 lens because of the price difference and for people who don’t want to spend the extra £600 on the next lens it is an excellent lens. Perfect for portrait style photography. Only negative i have is the fact i didn’t want to pay £400 more for the much better image stabilisation.
Blew my expectations, as the previous owner sent it with two lens pouches and a protection filter. Impeccable condition, cannot wait to start using it properly.
Excellent item enjoy using it on my full frame camera.
As a photography beginner i’ve made a start on building a collection of lenses and this is my first one. A few days after arriving i took it to iceland and captured some amazing shots with it. Even though i’m still experimenting i’m seeing great results with this lense. Feels and performs like a pro piece of equipment, on the heavy side and needs to be used with a tripod or at least perched on a rest of some sort when using.

Sharpest lens i ever had, well built and quality shows through in images.
I like this lens, it’s quick and produces sharp photographs. Not quite in the same league as the f2. 8s but better value for me as i don’t use it often.
0 l is usm lensi purchased this to replace a tamron lens which was so-so, in the hope of getting better quality pictures. The lens arrived next day as promised, in time to take it on holiday. I shot several pics with it, and two were especially good- one of rocks on the seashore and another of an old tin mine building. The detail was breathtakingit is not too heavy to carry around, and the is mechanism is very quiet and efficient. This is my 1st lens from the ‘l’ range, and i hope to acquire more.
So i bought this after searching a lens for a month and it actually surprised me about how many reviews (good) it had, and so i done my research on this lens and bought it a week ago i have to say the quality is beautiful, i recommend getting a tripod mount for this lens just to make it more proffesional and to keep it balanced as for i have the 600d with battery grip and the lens is still heavier. The amount of crisp detail is unbearable, its a mouth-watering desert. If your looking to buy the is verison i’d say that isnt needed if you want a new lens asap, taking inside photos is very simply possible by putting a flash on your gear and then setting your shutter speed high enough yet keeping the exposure correctly. 4 i think is enough for this lens. 8 would come handy but look at the price as well.
I upgraded from my ef 70 – 300 to this and threw in a 2x converter in case i needed the extra distance. It’s a lot of money (for me) so i had to choose whether to get this lens or upgrade my 70d body. The image quality is outstanding. Yes it is heavy but i have found this a fabulously flexible bit of kit and the fixed f2. 8 really brings it into its own at sunrise and dusk.
This is, without doubt, the best lens i have purchased having considered a number of options i. 8 70-200mm and the 70-300mm. Although obviously not as fast as the f2. 8 this will suit my purposes (keen amateur photographer) without breaking the bank. If i need to extend the focal length i will purchase the 1. 4 or 2x converter at a later date.
Great lens producing significantly better results than the sigma equivalent it replaced.
I bought this lens last year and have used it extensively since. I considered the cheaper alternative, but i’m so glad i paid the extra for this level of quality. The lens is simply astounding in terms of image quality and i have taken perfectly sharp images at 200mm at 1/20 thanks to the amazing image stabilisation. The down side is the shear size of the thing. That, coupled with the fact that it’s finished in canon grey plus the huge lens hood that’s supplied with it really makes you stand out in a crowd. Not something that every photographer necessarily wants. But hey, admiring, envious glances from other photographers isn’t always bad. I can highly recommend this lens to anyone wavering in their decision. You will not regret buying it for a moment.
Possibly the best lens i have ever had,can use with my x2 converter.

Not a lot in it between this and the f/2. 8 l is that’s nearly three times the price. Performance is excellent across the entire focal range. The lack of is may be an issue for some but if your careful or use a monopod you don’t really need it.
Great service, brilliant product, thanks.
Now where do i start on this, i brought this lens because i do a lot of paintball events and i wanted the best image quality i could get and i wasn’t let down when i brought this. The images this lens produces are incredibly sharp and no color fringing and it focuses blisteringly quickthe lens comes with a nice protective cover and a lens hood, both of which feel very nice and premium. The lens its self very sturdy and feels very well built, the switches are nice and the focus ring is smooth. This is a fabulous lens and i don’t regret not having the image stabilization and if you shoot have a shutter speed set to at least 150/1 then even fully zoomed in it will be nice and sharp from handheld. I took this lens into central london to test out. Walking around and taking pictures of people, cars ect and all in focus and very sharp and i only use a 600d so it works with budget dslrs.
Love this lens, i’ve only been an amateur photographer for just under 2 years, im learning fast and recently passed my diploma in photography courtesy of amazon local. Ive come to learn the importance of a good lens and highly recommend this canon beauty, ive had some great results with this lens and it goes well with my 7d, you wont be disappointed if you buy it. You notice immediately the step up in glass and build, great bit of kit.
Bought second hand, love my lens.
This really is a superb lens, the clarity is amazing. I’ve connected it to a 2x extender as well at times and this is also wonderful. Delivered safely and ahead of time.
With canon, you get what you pay for. I don’t know if i’ll ever be able to justify buying a lens again if it’s not a canon l-series. I’d rather save up and buy one of these, than get a lesser lens sooner.

Awesome quality lens, this is my second one sold the first just to get a newer made one,it’s just such a beautiful lens to use focus ring is so smooth unlike any lens i have used, image quality naturally as you would expect sharp and clean,at this price £798 after canon cashback promotionbuy it now . , and yes registered with canon no problem.
Best lens i have ever bought, it delivers quality every time it is used. Whilst reviews dont rate it as highly as the f2. 8 version, it is less than half the price and i havent noticed any adverse effects. Not too heavy, and solidly built.
The image quality is first class. The is works very well so pretty much every shot is usable. Very pleased with this purchase.
The service was the usual standard (good). I’ve used the lens a few times and you can see the difference. I will only by l lens’s from now on as it is worth the extra money. If you want to get the is version it will not be a bad thing but you need to work out if it is worth the extra few hundred quid. It is great in low light conditions. I would recommend it to everyone who wants quality.
Just started using it so early days still but took some hand helds of birds at 400 iso and the quality looks promising, also took a few cropped landscapes but as weather was not producing nice blue skies and the fact i have not yet purchased a lens tripod mount – which is necessary for shooting landscapes and static subjects – i had a few blurred ones. But i know this is a good lens as i have seen pros use it on youtube and in books. If you can live without is and master panning of wild life and shoot at a continuous shutter speed on a wide aperture set on aperture priority or shutter priority – when hand held – and get a tripod lens mount for static subjects, then you should get some nice images. This is a good affordable and versatile zoom for those on a tight budget.
