Sony SEL18200 E Mount – APS-C 18-200mm F3 : Excellent lens. This is the original

I took great care of it always had it in a case, but somehow its full of dust now and i can see it on the picture.

This is probably one of the best lens i ever own(not much experience) i use this lens with the nex 5 and is great for film and picture, images come amazing and unbelievable clear in manual mode, just is a bit to heave for the body of this camera autofocus maybe is a bit slow and not accurate in dark but love this lens.

Not much to say really, its a good quality lens and the zoom. It doesn’t move on its own in a vertikal position like older versions of this seems to have a problem with. Although quite big for a camera body like the nex-6 it does cover a lot and it has a great overall sharpness. When traveling, small and light is always better. In my opinion this lens gives a great deal of flexibility but it is on the edge for how much bulk and weight i want to drag along on my trips.

Bought this as a walkabout do it all lens, which is exactly what it does very well. However, we would rather use the sal70-300 g lens for wildlife shooting, as it’s sharper and quicker focusing. This is a near perfect do it all lens.

This lens is so good and essentially an excellent all rounder. Tbh you won’t take it off. I use it on a sony a6000 so new the lens is more expensive that the camera itself but this was from market place so significantly cheaper sans box etc but warranted good as new. So glad i just didn’t buy the standard tele lens suggested for my camera. Has button to stop lends extending when not in use. Can’t see how the motorised version would justify the extra cost but then i don’t shoot video.

This lens is gonna go down as a classic. Great image quality right through the range, lovely smooth operation, amazing build quality (all metal and solid as anything) and a bargain compared to other manufacturers plastic rubbish iq offerings. Some complain of the size but the laws of physics dictate that with an aps-c sensor the glass and lengths need to be this size so sony aren’t able to work miracles. I feel that on the nex 5 and 5n this is well balanced, has superb stabilisation, great iq and is worth every single pennybuy it.

I bought this item second hand and it functions very well and only has a few minor scratches outside. However, when i take pictures of lighter objects, a very noticeable dark spot becomes visible on the upper right side of the image. Other than that, the image quality is very good. Would recommend this lens to anyone who’s tired of switching lenses all the time as it is a very good all around lens, although it is quite large.

Bought as a single addition to my 18-55mm lens, this has been brilliant. As a sony lens, for my nex7, there’s no fussing about with adaptors and the autofocus works. Being a telephoto though it does suffer – autofocus and image stabilisation don’t work the best when zoomed, and it can struggle with the light too. But for compact (though it’s heavy) size and performance i find it more than suitable to my non-professional needs.

  • This is the one!

  • A good all in one

  • This lens is so good and essentially an excellent all rounder

Currently, this lens is in short supply in the uk. I needed this to go with a nex-5 to take pictures during swimming galas, where distance and lighting are not the best, and to match the zoom on a lumix tz7. I decided to use this as my main lens for the camera, since it can replace the 18-55 lens that is commonly fitted, at the cost of size and weight. It must weigh around half a kilo on its own, requiring support under the lens while shooting, and attracting a fair bit of attention, especially when the lens hood is fitted (included in the box). The e-mount lens allows auto focus with the nex series of cameras, focusing quickly in good light, and taking 1-2 seconds in poor conditions; and was ideal for an incompetent novice like myself (other lenses fitted using the adapter mount focus slower, according to feedback on the net, using the latest camera firmware). The zoom action feels solid, the focus ring behind, with a zoom lock facility to stop it creeping and more usefully for me, to stop the lens extending when the camera is slung over my shoulder. Quality-wise, the pictures are as good as expected from the nex 5, distortion is apparent at the 2 extremes of zoom range according to reviews on the net, but isn’t noticeable for me as a casual user. Packaging-wise, there’s only a plastic lens hood, lens cover and paper instructions in the box. No case provided or snout to fit over the lens when attached to the body, and no flash extender, which is needed as the lens barrel is taller than the camera body – this is quite poor considering the lens is almost twice the cost of the basic camera. With the relatively high cost of outlay, i’d hope to be able to fit this lens to future e-mount cameras.

This sony lens is a fine example of what `build quality` can be achieved especially when it`s dedicated to a specific camera. The lens controls themselves are very smooth. Yes, the lens is heavy and it does unbalance the nex. 5 i fitted it to but i expected this. The image quality overall is absolutely superb and `yes` there is the expected `barrelling effect` at the both extremes but you have to expect this as any zoom lens is a design compromise as opposed to in a fixed focal length lens. At the price (and cheap it certainly isn`t) i would have expected it to be supplied with a few `bits`, for a bare minimum, a protective case to carry it in. Also a front lens element protection by way of an nd or uv filter. A tripod mount would`ve been useful. I also prefer a t bar you can screw into the zoom barrel for zooming control (as a lever) – yes, i know it`ll stick out but zooming is more useable with this feature. I`d certainly recommend this lens to any nex camera owner and just think what it would be like with a nex.

Be aware – used item with serial number 1983023 from vimoo is defectedi ordered this item as used from vimoo, item had a sign of external damage which was not shown in photos it was promoted as fully working, but sometimes lens started shaking inside, making strange noise and introduced very big horizontal blur in photos and videos. Also sometimes camera with this lens mounted turned itself off. Now i brought another used liens like this which has no problems mentioned above. This is great lens for travel, replaced my selp1650 and sel55210. It is also very big and heavy comparing to other sony lenses.

The lens is great, its quite big and heavy but good very quality. The zoom lock is handy when carrying it around. Now i need to find a new camera bag because the one i had isnt big enough.

I bought this lens to replace the standard zoom on my nex 5, it is a real cracker, i’ve found it sharper than the standard zoom and reasonably easy to cart about. The 300 mm equivalent top end is all you’ll need for close ups , sports etc. I thought it might struggle with focus etc but no, great results and of course there is the optical stabiliser built in. I just upgraded to a nex-7 and i still love the results, even at the higher pixel count of the 24 megapixel sensor on the 7it does make the camera bulky so i kept my 16mm as a ‘party’ lens and have just pre-ordered the 50mm 1. All said and done, the 18-200 is a great all-rounder but a wee bit big for an ‘only’ lens on such a compact systemi did all the research on the tamron also but various reviews all put it much more inferior both in optical and mechanical quality to the sony. The build of the 18-200 is exquisite and well worth the extra few quid. I’m delighted with the nex system as a whole, i even use leica glass on occasion on the camera with an adapter , the nex-7 is fabulous and coupled with the 18-200 , a formidable setup for almost all situations. . Just be aware it’s a big heavy lens ( but way smaller than a dslr combo of similar quality.

One very nice lens for an affordable price. Only comments to make have already been made. It is quite heavy and bulky and zooming does take a little getting used to. On the other hand it is a valuable asset to the nex camera.

This is delightfiul piece of kit. At first inspection it appears to be very well constructed mechanically and this impression is reinforced in use. The focus and zoom control rings both move with a silky smoothness and the finish looks most attractive. I’ve given the lens a test run and the results to date are most satisfactory with my nex-7 and i would say it beats the standard kit lens with only slight barrel distortion at the widest setting. It is pleasing to see a lens hood is also included, other camera makers please note. A zoom lock is also provided. The only warning i would give is that the lens is quite weighty and does need support from the left hand. Delivery was also very prompt.

Zoom is good, a little bit sticky at max zoom, but time will probably make it smoother.

First things first: this thing is big. Many people have said it’s pretty heavy and all that, but i actually don’t mind that. It lends some weight to my nex-7 that i really appreciate. Picture quality is blow-away and all the issues with lens creep have been rectified, so no need to worry about that.

It was a good buy, although pricey, but i got lots of options to take pictures without changing lenses the delivery was very quick.

I’m using this lens on my sony a6500 and i really like it’s performance. Worth the money, as far as i’m concerned.

Pretty heavy, but i knew that before i bought it. It saves me from having to change lenses. I like zoom in and out all the time.

Great service and value for money.

The quality of this lens is really good and it produces slightly sharper images than the other lenses in the range. However, as most people have said, it is bulky and heavy which promulgates a bit of shake unless used with a tripod or other support and it does obscure the field slightly if used at its lowest zoom setting. It has since acquired a detritus speck inside the lens which it has apparently sucked in, when zooming, and i cannot get rid of this. I also noted that another reviewer said this his lens was full of dust. Sony say that the repair of this lens somehow requires a spare part costing over £300 (total cost + £402) and that if the lens is out of warranty then they will not help financially, which i find very bad pr given that this ingress of detritus is a design flaw. However h lehmann of stoke on trent are able to remove the specks without having to resort to replacing expensive spare parts.

Overall, this lens is a fantastic complement to the nex camera, helping you to bring out the fuller potential of the camera; it is not, however, without a few (minor) compromises. For me, none of these drawbacks are sufficient to outweigh the significant benefits of this lens but i set them out for completeness in case any are deal breakers for you. Pros:* the 18-200mm range of the lens is superb. I had found i was reverting to using my old f828 to take some shots as i just could not get in close enough to some of the action i wished to capture using the 18-55mm nex lens. The quality of the combination of lens and camera is clearly visible in the shots and video footage i have taken since buying this lens. * a lock is incorporated to prevent creeping but i have not found it necessary to engage this feature; even when i had the camera on my tripod taking shots almost directly overhead/underfoot the lens stayed firmly in position. Cons:* one of my primary reasons for purchasing the nex was the size and weight of the camera – i wanted something that would be easily portable and not feel as though i was carrying a hundredweight of equipment. This lens almost doubles the weight and size of the camera to the extent that it feels little different to its predecessor (for me), the f828, although the picture and video quality are vastly superior. The 18-55 lens and camera weighs around 570g whereas the 18-200 lens and camera is over 910g. * sometimes i like to rest my camera on improvised mounts to take shots, like boulders or fences.

I bought this lens to go with my nex 7. I’ve never used such a zoom lens before but together with a 24mp sensor, i’ve been finding this is excellent for wildlife photos. All the comments about build quality i agree with. Couple of criticisms though: the central lugs on the lens cap are not deep enough to grip properly. If you use the lens hood, you need to grip these lugs to get the cap on and off – and it’s nigh impossible whilst wearing gloves. Autofocus in low light is rather slow, requiring a couple of attempts for the camera to focus properly.

I use this lens with the sony nex vg20 and get excellent pictures.

Had this for 18+ months now, originally for a nex-3 and more recently a nex-6. Takes very nice photos that are pretty nice quality – you have to pixel peep to notice any issues. Even then, you can magnify your images and see lots more detail if you want. Good points: quality output, solid feeling lens. + close focus shots are good. + wide range means less lens swapping (this effectively replaces the need to carry the 18-50 + 55-210 zooms)less good points: ok, this is a metal lens for the most part and so is heavier than some, such as the alternative sony le and tamron 18-200s. + on my copy, there seems to be some oil marks from use of the lens lock (that prevents the lens zooming when your camera is hanging down from its strap). + if you use a nex-3 the supplied flash will cause shadows in your photos (as it is not tall enough to illuminate above the lens) – i used the hvl-f20 add-on flash (for the nex-3) or a larger external flash (on the nex-6) that was fine. 3+) it can have trouble focusing on fast objects or in poor light such as at an air show. Probably it can’t use the pdaf / focussing cells on the nex-6 at that aperture. Workaround is to zoom out a little and focus then gets nailed. This is not really a fault of the lens but an attribute of it being a typical superzoom (with quite a small wide-only aperture at the extreme tele end). + it is a biggish lens, so it won’t slip into a briefcase without some thought.

Super all round lens for easy holiday use.

New lenses were very expensive so i was delighted to find this one which was approx £200 below the new price. Magnification will ensure some good close-ups when i hit the safari trail in april.

The lens is good as other reviews have said. It has good image quality, the zoom is smooth, and the build in image stabilisation is excellent. It is a heavy lens, so while it can be fitted to the smaller e-mount cameras in sony’s range (such as the nex-5n), it really does dwarf the camera. Still, that is not a high price to pay if it means you only need to carry one lens around with you while you’re travelling. One significant omission is a lens extender. The flash provided with the camera does not function correctly without the extender due to the very long length of the lens. In several other reviews that mention this odd omission someone from sony have popped in to apologise, say that the extender will be supplied to them now, and that future boxes should include the extender. I was therefore surprised that the extender was not included in the box i purchased. I previously thought that sony would have excellent customer care, particularly when an expensive item like this was purchased.

The best lens i have ever bought and use it as my go to lens for all types of shots. Price well worth the use i get from this lens.

This lens may be a lot of cash to start with, but in the long run is the better by. Honestly its worth spending the extra bit of money on it rather then going to by the smaller lens as it gives you that little bit more. Also its worth getting the lens that suits this camera then buying an adapter and using different lens as you would lose most of the cameras great functions.

Quite heavy, dwarfs the camera body. Excellent picture quality, and a build quality that nikon could only dream of with it’s 18-200. Disappointing that it does not include a lens case, or even a bag.

Thomas willis, the lens is now full of dust, very disconcerting and not good for a sony product.

I finally splashed out and bought one of these a few months ago when i managed to find somewhere that had one in stock; in a few months of looking, i had only found two places that actually had stock. In terms of build quality, the lens is fantastic. The metal body is sturdy and well made, with the zoom and focus rings well positioned, the zoom ring at the front, and the focus ring behind. The rubber rings are good to grip, and move easily. The zoom lock switch is especially useful when storing or transporting the lens, and also useful if you’re worried about knocking the zoom when taking photos. The quality of the images produced by the camera is very good. There are slight distortions at the extremes of zoom, but on most photographs these are not particularly visible. The range of the zoom is incredibly helpful, with my 18-55mm kit lens seeing far less use since i purchased this. Also, the optical stabilisation system (oss) works excellently. When shooting at 200mm, all unwanted movement is stopped as soon as the shutter is half-depressed.

Very well pleased with this lens and so impressed with the iq (am using it with a nex 6). Coming from a canon 7d with l lenses i am not disappointed. I have tried quite a number of super zoom lenses over the years, none of which i kept. This one is a keeper and i can go out for a day’s shoot without feeing compromised.
