Opteka Achromatic 10x Close-Up Macro Lens – Amazed

Like many people getting into digital slr, i opted for the sony a200. The lens that comes with the a200 doesn’t have a macro mode, so i thought it might be fun to try converting it for macro use using the opteka x10. Once you add the opteka, you have to set the camera to manual focusing (set the little switch on the camera that reads ‘af mf’ to ‘mf), and you have to put the camera on a tripod if you are going for extreme macro (as i did – i worked with the lens set to 70mm, giving max zoom). Macro photography can take a lot of setting up, because (a) you have to manually focus (b) you have a very low depth of field and (c) the lens with the opteka attached requires very long exposure times (easily over a second), but the results can certainly warrant the effort. Rather than talk about the results, and given that a picture is worth a thousand words, i have added three of my photos to the customer images section (the ones with ‘photographed by shamb’ in the captions). Judge the results for yourself. All photographs were photographed by myself using the a200 in raw mode. Some post processing was carried out in adobe lightroom (mainly exposure correction – i always overexpose my images and then correct by underexposing the raw conversion in lightroom as this gives you very good colours because of the way digital camera sensors work). Oh, one other thing my order came back with a free opteka 7 piece camera care kit. This included a mini tripod, a pack of protectors for the a200 screen, a dust blower, and some misc other cleaning equipment.

This is just as it was described perfect i every and the delivery was on time and i could not wish for better,i would recomend this to anyone and as i always do tell people to deal with amazon james.

Exceptionally good close up images are possible with this lens from around 3-4 inches.

Having bought much cheaper close up lenses, i was really please with the performance of this. None of the usual blurred edges the image is very clear. Just a bit of practice helps, keeping above f8 helps avoiding too narrow depth of field and attached to my sony hx300 bridge camera you can get very close. Well worth the money, stay away from the stackable cheap lenses this 10x is excellent value. Will be buying the girlfriend one.

This lens is an ideal way to delve into macro photography without breaking the bank. It produces excellent results when used as intended, but can also deliver up some interesting effects when used ‘outside it’s envelope’. For example, it created a mild fisheye effect when used to photograph our german shepherd dog from about four feet away. All in all, a fabulous lens for the price, and delivery from the usa took less than a week.

I’ve only had a wee play with this lens so far as i’ve come offshore to work, but a couple of pics i took before leaving home have had lots of ‘likes’ on facebook. ๐Ÿ™‚ considering the low price this is well worth it.

Very happy with this add on macro lens. Used this for close up of wedding rings and friendship badge for a newly wed couple and was amazed with the results.

I’m using this with a sony a200, as an actual macro lens is a bit of a stretch for me at the moment, but i still wanted to try some close up photography. I’ve got some fantastic results out of it, it takes a little bit of getting used to but is well worth it. I work in print, so tried printing out a couple of images at 1300mm x 1000mm and even at that size the detail and clarity is really good, for instance a baby tomato filling the frame, with all the tiny hairs perfectly sharp.

I really like this product its save me a lot of money. The only thing you need to remember this lens doesn’t come with adapter so in my case i had to buy one 40. 93£) and i bought 49-77mm rings stepping adapter set(9. 99£) so now i can use for my 40.

It’s cheap but it works okfitted my sony dslr no problem & i took a few quick snaps of small apple buds which came out grand.

This little lens gives surprisingly good results when put on the end of the 18-70mm sony alpha lens. The area of focus is very small but the lens allows you to get so much closer to your subjects which allows for great photo opportunities. Supplied in small carry bag with lens caps, good delivery service too.

Great quality for money, promptly delivered this macro lens is added on top of your actual lens and works very well for good close-up macro pictures. Have a look at the uploaded ones.

Wow, i’m blown away by the quality of the results i’m getting just from a quick play with the lens. I have a lightbox i use for product photography and mounted the camera on a (cheap) tripod, using a cable release so i could use long exposures. Once i’d switched to manual focus, i was able to get a nicely focused shot of a tomato seedling at a fastish shutter speed which kept the depth of field nice and short. Ramping it up to a 2 second exposure brought the background into focus. Can’t believe what stunning results i’m getting from a £15 lens attachment. Ordered in the evening of the 16th and it arrived on the morning of the 18th. I have taken a few trial shots and it appears to perform well. As with all macro photography you do need to use a tripod, cable release and self timer for best results. See image of watch as an example.

4 and its amazing for £15, you can get so close. The dof is really small with macro so i tend to use f5. Lots of light and/or a tripod is of course recommended. My 50mm max magnification is only 0. 15 on its own whereas the 18-70mm is 0. 25 so should be able to get even closer. Really impressed with this lens, can’t believe the price.

I have just received the opteka 10 x macro lens and am delighted with it already, not even having used it yet. It looks and feels like a good quality lens. I’ve fitted it onto the camera and the 55mm thread is a precise fit, with no snags, just as you would expect. It comes with a small pouch to keep it in. I also received a free gift from 47th street photo. As a previous reviewer has noted, it consists of a 7 piece accessory kit, which includes screen protectors, a lens cleaning kit and a neat mini-tripod with flexible legs and a belt hook. I can see the mini-tripod, in particular, getting plenty of use. When compared with the price of a full-size macro lens, this is a very good option. I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to get up close with their camera. I’d also recommend this particular supplier.

Really awesome, if u compare with the price it’s better than the price. I would like to invite friend to buy this.

This macro converter is actually a nice bit of kit as although not a true macro lens it does still alow you to get close up shots and is also a good starting point for getting into macro photography.

I am a complete novice to macro photography but i have had excellent results from this lens straight ‘out of the box’. You have to get focus sharp really close to the subject – about 3inches – and avoid camera shake if possible. I find that the sony a58 steady shot function is a great help in avoiding blurring. So far i have only been on autofocus. Look forward to experimenting on manual, aperture priority mode and shutter speed.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Excellent – astounding value

  • Remember to buy adapter its your lens its different than 55mm size

  • Brilliant buy

This lens accessory does exactly what you expect – works in auto or manual mode and delivers a quality image. It is easy to use and comes well packaged.

I received this today and immediately went outside for a play. I was quite happy with the results and even checked to see how much of a difference there was with using the 18-55mm without, and it does indeed allow you to get closer and the detail is good. I will compare this with the tamron macro tomorrow, but i would say for the price you have nothing to loose, it probably won’t be as good as say a £200 + macro lens but it would definitely be excellent for those just starting out or maybe for the odd shot for project work which is what i will probably use mine for.
