YONGNUO YN50mm F1 – Good, inexpensive, prime lens.
For a lens that is considerably cheaper than any equivalent, there is little wrong with this product. Don’t expect fantastic optics in this price range, hence the four stars, but it is a very capable 35mm fixed focal length, ef, autofocus lens. If, like me, you are a hobbyist, looking for such a lens, then i would definitely recommend it, after all, it’s not going to break the bank, and gives you a prime lens, of sufficient quality for most hobbyist needs.
Took a few shots on manual and auto.
For that price this lens is incredible, totally recommend it.
Having tried both the yn50 and the yn35, the 35mm is a much better portrait focal length for a cropped frame (works out at 56mm on my 1. The 50mm always seemed a little too ‘zoomed in’ so felt i could always do with another step back. The 35mm is much easier to frame, especially indoors where space can be limited. Image quality is fantastic for the price, build quality seems good too with a metal camera mount.
The lens is good, a bit slow sometimes but generally good . It arrived a week late from supplier.

Wanted this for family meal photos in dimly lit restaurants in the mediterranean. 8 but the 50mm is just a bit too ‘zoomed’ on a crop sensor camera. This gives the extra width and for the price (and having autofocus) i was impressed with the quality. It probably wont get the most glowing score on dxomark but it produced results as good as most ‘kit’ zoom lenses and isn’t embarrassed by the canon 50mm either. I’m sure for the quality-at-all-costs types there are better options, but you’d have to spend 7-8x (or more) which for most people is too much. If you want to take lowish light photos without breaking the bank then this is well worth a try.
I’m lovin iti was very sceptical at first but after a day of playing with it i cannot be more happy. I think lens is very sharp – as for £70(ish) lens. I compared it with canon 40mm f2. 8 and it is not that much far behind. It does deliver pretty sharp pictures even at f/2. I love the bokeh it is producing. Zoom is a bit noisy but i do not mind it as i will be using it for studio photography. Just do not use the filter that is included with the lens – it’s super bad and it will make your pictures looks awful.
Not sure what anybody would expect from a lens at this price, but i’m pleased. 4, so wanted something wider for my 6d. Okay, the af is noisey and hunts a little and the build is a tad cheap, much like the canon 50mm/1. However, it works and the images seem fine. There is some vignetting, which can be dealt with in post, and it probably isn’t a sharp as some other lenses. However, it has given me a little boost on my primes. I guess if you’re after a budget 35mm, you cannot go wrong with this.
It works perfect don’t get me wrong it’s a good lens. Just not what i expected in a wide angle lens, but a good lens none the less.
Been using this lens for a while now, using a canon 700d (rebel t5i). Bought this to get a closer approximation of 50mm on the crop sensor. Feels sturdy when using it, i’m not particularly precious with my equipment, and this has been able to withstand my punishment so far. Very nice lens, esp for the price, some colour fringing, but nothing too noticeable.
Great for using a a standard prime on my canon eos 550d and 400d digital cameras. Also as a wide angle on my eos 3, 30, 300x, 5, 50e and 10 film cameras. 35mm is regarded as the angle of view of the human eye, which is why a lot of street photographers use it as their standard lens. This is a clone of a canon 35mm f2 though it has 7 aperture blades instead of 5.
Excellent little lens, great value.

4 so this review is based on the price, the sigma cost £600, this cost £60 and the difference is noticeable only at f2 (a little) at f2. 8 i couldnt tell and even at f2 your shouldnt be looking for sharp corners anyway, you can add some sharpening in post if its a big deal, on a canon 5d3 it focuses fast, reason i purchased this was for my 3 axis gimbal as the 5d3 and sigma are too heavy, this things is extremely light weight, if you dont like the picture quality you will need to spend much more money,.
Quality is great for such a budget lens, much like the canon 50mm f1. The auto focus was surprisingly very good and gave very sharp results at the focus point. 5 was the better fstop than the wider open apertures. The auto focus was quick and theres some noise but nothing i can’t live with. I did find it hunts and is a lot slower in live mode but this isn’t an issue. Took some portraits shots and the charity of the eyes was super sharp and gave some great results.
Works on a canon 300x film camera. Seems well made (plastic, but not too cheap, certainly seems better than the ef 28-90 iii that came with the camera). Will update when photos are developed. Update: i bought it for a film camera, but i have recently been able to try it with a canon digital body, unfortunately only the digital rebel xt (350d). I compared it to the 28-70 f/2. 8l usm at 35 mm and my kit lens the 28-90 as above. 8 was there too, but i didn’t compare images due to the different focal length. Build quality wise it is very similar to the canon 50 mm f/1. It is plastic, but feels better than my kit lens. It is quick to focus and produce decent, but not amazing images. Image quality wise, at f/8 the l lens obviously beats it, but i can’t see much of a difference between the yongnuo and the kit lens (the canon 28-90 has more chromatic aberration, i think). 8 and f/4 the yongnuo does not do so well.
Very good auto focus, and very nice shallow depth of field shots, but colours are a little strong, like a lumix.
I’d say you get what you pay for when you opt for cheap knockoffs but even at this price it’s a complete ripoff. The auto focus doesn’t work. It constantly hunts for focus and always falls just short when it does think its got it. Every single picture from my holiday is completely unusable. Focal length on a cropped sensor was good but i’d advise spending the extra on a better lens from a better brand. Only people i’d recommend this lens to:- children who are learning photography and would benefit from the more forgiving focal length compared to the 50mm on a cropped sensor and don’t neeeeed the best of the best – even then they could just use the kit lens and leave it at 35mm. Editafter going through and editing my pictures, the lens isn’t that bad. I still stand by what i said before but the pictures weren’t all completely unusable. For facebook/instagram photos you’ll be fine with this lens.
This is a great lens for those not wanting to pay for canon’s 35mm offering. A little soft when shooting wide open, a little better at f2. Honestly, i really like using this lens, and even having some slightly softer shots isn’t the end of the world in most cases, they’re still usable for smaller printsonly real issue i had with the lens was that the autofocus motor can be a little loud, it’s rather comical in truth and something that after a while you just don’t notice. It’s really not that much of an issue. For a better review, check out digitalrev’s video comparison on youtube.
