Marumi DHG 200 62mm Achromat Lens, Amazing!
Having used the +3 version for a year i decided i needed the more powerful +5 and the cheapest source was via amazon. The lens adds extra magnification to my very best macro lenses without degrading the image. Images may be found under my name, as author, here:[.
I’ve been using the dhg 220 (+5) in conjunction with my olympus em1mk2 and 60mm macro lens. The +5 allows me to fill the frame with the average bumblebee. Image quality is excellent with no noticeable negative impact. My attached pictures were all taken with the marumi lens, olympus 60mm and diffused flash. Working distances are a couple of inches. 1 (seems to yield the best results with my set up) is about 3-5mm. I hand-hold the camera and use autofocus. I try to hold whatever the insect is sitting on between my fingers, whilst balancing the camera on my wrist with a home made bracket. This results in a better hit rate for sharp pictures because the subject can’t blow around in the wind.
First off, check out the flickr marumi dhg achromat group to see what you get. Read on…i got the +3 (330) and +5 (200). I kept the +3 dioptre: i get no fringing, good sharpness, contrast and colour; and the results are surprisingly good. Very reluctantly, i returned my +5 due to some fringing going on in the corners. maybe i got a sample with its two elements slightly misaligned. They are otherwise well made and robust (i dropped my +3 onto a stony trail with only minor cosmetic damage). The 62mm +3/+5 weigh approx 90g and come with no end caps so i got cheap filter-stack end caps on amazon. Tele-zooms are ideal in the field with dioptres (lots of reasons on the web) and i get 0. 73x with my 55-200mm +3, 24-33cm closest and furthest working distances. the gain in magnification and new working distance you get will depend heavily on your lens (and chosen dioptre). I found the wikipedia “close-up filter” equations work. If you are undecided whether to get the +3 or +5, when thinking about how much magnification you want, consider the ratio of your subjects to your sensor size. The quality is good so i can zoom out a bit to preserve depth of field and crop later, or just crop to recompose.
Lens seems fine and as expected. The only criticism i have is that for the price it would have been nice if marumi had supplied a decent case like the ones that canon supply with their close up lenses. The thin plastic one that it comes in is not a good fit, nor does it protect the lens. I’ve had to buy an extra case so i’m reducing the rating to 4 stars.
Item is exactly what’s described. Note that with my sony rx10m3 the working distance is ~30 cm and requires a tripod for sharp pictures.

The marumi 330 was up to the highest quality that i expect from marumi.

I made only a few photographs with it.
It’s easy to pack and well manufactured. The image quality is excellent. The depth of field is very short, significantly more than a specialised macro lens, so bear that in mind.
Photos are from my first attempt using this ‘filter’ in the garden, handheld, for the price i cant really fault it, some shots may have a little aberration, but when using the lens at 300mm the depth of field is pretty short even with small aperture, so it is hard to tell. I recommend it as a first step into macro photography, especially if (like me) you cant afford a dedicated macro lens. Photos taken on a nikon d3400 with a nikkor 70-300 af-p f/4.
This replaces raynox dcr 250 – returned due to vignetting on my sony rx10. The marumi is excellent quality and being the same diameter as the rx10 (62mm) only starts to vignette from 50mm – a workable fl for my type of photography. It is 3 diopter so is suitable for flowers but not so much for small insects (for this one would need the next size up 200/5). There is very little chromatic aberration due to it being achromatic. Recommended for getting into macro and occasional use. I carry it when travelling saving ‘humping’ the more weighty dedicated macro lens.
I’m using with one of the best pentax lenses ever made – a 50-135 da*, i also had a real macro lens to compare it to,i found that the shots with the marumi were just as good and many actually better. With the marumi i seem to get more light/faster shutter speed than the dedicated macro (not suprising when you look at the size of the front element). In terms of depth of field i lost nearly 2 stops, so even with an f2. 8 host lens do not go below f6. 3, the results will be dire – get plenty of light (a flash or a very bright day) and go for high aperture at all times, bump up the iso if necessary but keep that aperture value high. If you have a poor host lens don’t expect miracles, also expect the minimum focus distance to be halved (great news for me as the da* lens has a 100cm min focus distance normally).

If you dont have the money for buying a proper macro lens and you own a telephoto lens then this little beauty will make you come really close to subjects with no distortions.
Really is as sharp as other reviewers claim. I use it in combination with a d800 and 70–200 f4 vr lens and really cannot see a loss of quality. Overall, this is a much more successful combo than the d800 and my trusty but aged 105d macro.
Super lens – maybe could use a quick access storage box.
Before i go any further, a serious moan. This fine lens arrived and is in a stout case. But the lens is without protective caps on either end. I can buy the cheapest lens going, and it will come with protective capsit is the easiest thing to finger mark such a lens getting out of its case, this is not a cheap item. Blame the manufacturer, nil points. The lens on my sony ri, gave staggering results after many ‘takes’ it was just faultless. I send photos of art objects around the world, and this lens has captured fine details to the finest degree. Ordered pm thursday, and i am using it on saturday can’t fault that. Must go i am sending a complaint to the manufacturer.
I use the x5 lens filter with my canon 100mm macro for photographing insects and the results are superb.
Great product – you only get a fairly short range of acceptable focus, but the quality is excellent and the results are also excellent.
I use it in a nikon 70-200mm f4 with astonishing results. This lens is very sharp, the vr helps with the stability and there isn’t any image degradation noticeable with this filter.
Works as expected, no noticeable effect on quality, very hard to focus though with wide open :).
Has enough resolution to match sigma dp m series. Auto focus still works but can hunt in lower light. The ring frame is quite thick tho, probably worth taking note of before buying.

Just wonderful on my little canon s120 (had to to build a tube for it). Good optics, and good glass. The photo is from the s120, a 12mp camera.
Well made lens but not suitable for my needs as can only be used at widest angle of camera zoom lens which meant had to be only a couple of cms from subject to produce image larger than possible with camera lens only.
First the lens is arrived without the fine leather protective case shown in the photos. Instead a plastic boxnow come on. (other wise 5 stars)that’s out of the way now the lens. When i ordered this filter, i was not sure what to expect. After taking a number of pictures and getting use to the focal length i am absolutely happy with it. Its sharpness, contrast, and colour are verygood. If you enjoy close-up photography but do not want to buy a macro lens, i highly recommend this filter. It is way better than most non-achromat filters on the market as it combines two elements to correct chromatic aberration.
