Sony SAL70300G A Mount – Full Frame 70–300 mm F4 : Buy this lens!

Received in excellent condition.

Bought for a tiger safari in india and used on a full-frame a850. A huge improvement over the effectively kit lens on my a350. 5 means not as fast as you’d get from a prime and despite the option to limit the focus to 30m-infinity, it does have a tendency to search quite slowly. Overall though, a very good lens.

I am new to this quality lens so i cannot compare it with any other, but no need to, this is good.

If you are considering buying this lens- and you can afford it- then you already have a good deal of experience and know what you are going to get. A top class professional grade piece of glass that will help you achieve the very best shots possible. So what can i add from my experience?.I’ve had the lens about 6 months. Firstly, and contrary to the internet, the lens is weather sealed. Sony claim so on their website and i also wrote to sony to check- they confirmed that it is. The lens itself is finished in the same style as other weather sealed sony products so- accept it- it is dust and moisture resistantsecondly, if you are still making up your mind, then perhaps you are considering the sigma or tamron super-zooms?. Don’t buy those lenses- they are truly inferior. The sony autofocus is incredible, the bokeh (whilst subjective) is beautiful; the build quality is top class and the sharpness, across the entire zoom range (even wide open above 200mm) is class leading- quite astonishing.

My interest in cameras started in the mid 70’s and i have owned a few slr’s. I have always been an enthusiastic amateur, but my interest in photography has bloomed since the invention of the dslr and now slt cameras. In the last few years i have owned three sony alphas a a200, a350 and have now treated myself to a a77. I have loved all of these cameras. My sony 70-300mm has spent a bit of time on all three of these cameras and overall the results have overall been very, very good. On the a77 the results are certainly professional quality. But you have to know what you limits are and what to expect. It may not be the same as other lenses that you have used, but in operation it is intuitive and easy to get used to.

Expensive, but if you require the best 70-400 for sony alpha this is it.

I bought this as my second lens to compliment the 16-50 kit lens that i got with my a77i was torn between getting this and a cheaper version from another manufacturer but after a lot of reading decided to go for this onei did try the much cheaper sony 75-300 (around the £200 price) whom a friend let me use for a day or two, and to put it mildly it was awfulthe lens feels very well built and even though it mainly plastic construction to keep the weight down no doubt?. It still feels very sturdy with a nice weight to itthe autofocus is near silent and in most cases very quick through all the focal range. It comes with a very large lens hood to keep stray light out and a soft lens pouch which is very handy and i wish all lens would come with one?i have been using it exclusively on my a77 and finding it very good as long as you have enough light it being f4. 6 this lens performs superbly outdoorsi would not consider it if you tend to do a lot of indoor or poor light shooting?it does have the dreaded dust collecting rings all sony lens suffer from and they are reversed on this lens so the manual focus is at the rear which as caught me out a couple of times :-)i have put a couple of shots to show the size of the lens with hood attached it is rather large?. Also included a couple of pics taken with the lensmy final verdict is it a very good lens for outdoor use but very ££££££ so not sure about value for money really?my only gripe so far is i wish it was a stop or so brighter?. But i suppose it would then be double the price ?.

I bought this lens on 5/10/13, sadly after 4 months ift developed a focusing fault. Having contacted the seller on their response and turnaround time for repair i returned it. I was told normally 2 weeks, it has now been three, the part is unavailable until end april and sony are unable to supply me with a replacement quickly. The seller has refused to refund or replace the lens – despite the issue now causing me ‘considerable inconvenience’ which contravenes the sale of goods act 1979 section 48. I have raised a claim with amazon for a refund.

I’m not an experienced photographer but this lens and the a65 i bought with it is outstanding. Simple to operate, solid construction, and pin sharp photos.

The g series is the premium range in sony’s range and this 70-300mm g does give a good impression out of the box, it feels nicely made, comes with a deep lens hood and lens case to store it in. Build is solid with tight joins and a smooth zoom and focus action, the lens has a bit of heft to it it’s under a kg so it’s not a monster to carry around, but it’s not super light either. This is a full frame lens but can be used on both ff and crop bodiesmy quick fire list of good and bad pointsgood:+ delivers good sharpness across the range, does drop off a bit at the 300mm end (stopping down helps)+ good build quailty, well made with a nice but large hood and case included too+ ca is well controlled rarely an issue+ 9 blade, circular aperture delivers mostly good out of focus blur (or bokeh if you prefer) it can get harsher stopping down a bit, about in line with other tele zooms though+ ssm motor is very quiet, smooth and offers full time manual focus+ 0. 25x max magnification which is ok for close up shots (about average again here)bad:- cost is high, a bit too high in my view even taking into account the good optics- some pincushion at the 250-300mm mark (it’s not bad and fairly normal for a tele zoom lens)- not weather sealed (and it should be for the retail price)filter is 62mm which is shared with a few other a mount lenseslens speed is f4. 5 to start with dropping to f5 at about 90mm and f5. 6 at 135mm (roughly) so you’re at f5. The sony 70-300mm g is a nice lens well made and capable of delivering good results across the range, though it needs stopping down a touch at the 300mm at times (depending on how far the subject is from you) the fine rubber grips feel nice, though they are prone to picking up dirt and dust. It’s also a very useful lens to have for both full frame and aps-c users. The problem is the price, which can’t really be entirely overlooked.

Used on holiday really excellent but found it heavy needs tripod for best results. Fantastic when used at the air show great results but autofocus seams a little slow so care on your shots needed.

I know this is a massive financial jump from the cheap sal75300 but it’s also a massive jump in quality. Once you use this lens, just once in any conditions, you’ll wonder how you ever put up with the cheaper version. It is near silent, fast, very, very fast for this type of lens when you’re spending less that 4 figures. Auto focus is fast and accurate and there’s a hold button. The quality of images in almost all conditions is magnificent. I use it for product shots in studio, wildlife in both controlled and wild environments. It’s also good for some scenic views, especially at distance. I really recommend this lens.

The limited aperture was restrictive in the fading light, using a fast shutter speed from the jeep, but this was expected.

I am new to photography, having taken it up in january 2010 without any prior knowledge of the subject. I have only owned a dslr for seven months. ( sony a350 )being female, not very tall or particularly strong, size and weight of any lens used, is a concern. I am able to carry this around all day with ease. I am extremely pleased with the photos taken with this lens. ( some of them have been attached to this listing.

Clear photographs even if you crop.

So far lens lives up to expectations re sharpness. It is consistent with the reviews i read before purchasing. Getting shots i couldn’t get with my sigma f4 100-300 although a bit more sensitive to low light. The one issue and the reason for 4 stars is the lens hood. Made of some kind of brittle material. Effectively unusable in the field as you can’t lug it about without damaging it. Mine has a small crack already.

Sony SAL70300G A Mount – Full Frame 70–300 mm F4.5–5.6 G SSM Zoom Lens : It*s easy to handle, it is not to big to always take it with you. I often take pictures with children and dogs running around and i found this lens gives good sharpness and nice pictures. I am an amateur but more than satisfied with the lens.

A really top piece of glass,a superb lens if very expensive, but you get what you pay for.

When i originally bought my sony a77 i also purchased the sal75300, although an ok lens it did have its weaknesses, such as a lot of purple fringing at the long end. I took the plunge and bought the sal70300g, and its an incredible lens, solidly built, incredible iq all through the length and looks great fully stepped down. Its a great compliment to the sal1650 and being slightly shorter starting focal length means the intermediate gap isn’t too long. Overall well worth it, and a noticeable step up from the cheaper sal75300.

I have a sony nex 5n and wanted to to get closer to nature. I purchased the la-ea2 adaptor to allow me to use this lens and it was everything i wanted. Yes its big and heavy and makes the camera look small but as it’s a sony the results are superb. I have used it in hand and with the anti shake it still gives very good results at full range. The focus ring allows fast response for quick pictures. On a tripod with remote control its gives a better centralised defined image. With the adaptor it was well worth the money. I do have to say that i now put the camera on the lens and not the lens on the camera as it is easier. Came with its own padded bag with carrying lanyard and lens covers.
