Neewer 28mm f/2 : You won’t be sorry.

For the price of this lens and the quality you get, what’s not to like.
I use primarily legacy lenses with my sony a7 and olympus em5 camera systems. I’ve been on the look out for a cheap manual focus lens in a native m43 mount (no need for adapters), to use with my olympus em5. The olympus em5 is my ‘fun’ camera that i use when relaxing, out with the family etc, and don’t want the hassle of the (albeit) not much bigger sony system. I’m not going to to give a technical review, just an observational one based on my experience with manual lenses. Initial impressions:- packing is good, comes complete with a lined pouch and cleaning cloth (rebadged mieke i think?)- form factor is small offering a good compact pancake lens (reminds me of the pentax 40mm pancake lens from the old mx slrs)- construction is metal with glass elements (?) i think- mount is all metal- mount is snug and secure with no play- feel is good in the hand and mine seems well made- 28mm on a m43 mount camera gives a 56mm approx fov, so the lens/camera feels like your standard 50mmobservations from use:- the aperture ring is clickless, operation is smooth, but it’s situated right next to the lens mount. Moving it isn’t hard, but if you have large hands you’ll definitely find it fiddly – my hands are small and i find i have to look at the lens to get the aperture ring right sometimes- focusing throe from minimum to infinity is a 180º turn- focusing from minimum to 2 metres is through 160º- focusing from 3 metres to infinity is the tiny last bit of focusing of about 20º (not much at all)- focusing is nice and smooth, but can be easy to knock out of focus, particularly if you’re fine tuning focusing in the last 2 metres to infinity- focusing on mine at infinity isn’t at the very end of the focus ring position, you have to pull focus back a notch to achieve infinity properly- bokeh is nice and pleasant, not amazing, but not terrible- colour contrast is great and feels old school- sharpness, even wide open is very good in the centre, gets even better when stopped down- the render of the images has a nice roundness to them (again quite old school), compared with some modern glass, which i like a lotthere’s nothing more to say other than this is an amazing lens for the money. Under fifty quid for a new lens on a native m43 mount is just fantastic. I have been really pleased with the results and for the money, you really can’t go wrong. Glad i took the plunge and i’ll definitely be getting the 35mm and 50mm from neewer. I’ve added some snaps taken over the weekend.
