TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm F/2 – It works great on my 600d

Very fast lens and able to use for night scenes without a tripod.

I bought this lens as i needed a faster lens for band photography – usually in murky pubs. I was a bit worried about the lack of vc, but as i need to be at 1/90th or more anyway to freeze the movement of the band it hasn’t been a problem. 8 nearly all the time and the results are fine. 6 or 8 the sharpness is amazing. A bonus is the free five year guarantee – this needs to be registered for , and it did get a bit confusing as i bought it through amazon uk, and it came from france, but the serial number showed it as from germany. The registration is europe-wide so there were no problems in the end – just need to translate the german registration confirmation documents now.

On my canon 70d focusing is very fast and has no problem tracking movig subjects. I think even the equivalent canon lens will it find it difficult to match even though it’s twice the price. It is also lighter than the competition. The lens does make a noise when fousing but not much and in practice it’s lost any surrounding noise.

I had been disappointed with the results with the kit lens and exchanged it for a used pentax f2. 8 20-40 from their top range. Although the results were better and the lens handled nicely i was still dissatisfied and decided to try a non-pentax lens. What a difference this has made. The tamron 17-50 is competitively priced but nevertheless operates very smoothly and feels well made. So far as focusing is concerned, when used in live-view it is very accurate but slow. It is not so accurate when used through the viewfinder but then the pentax f2. 8 20-40 was worse and it may be more of an issue with the camera rather than the lenses. This factor has been improved using the camera’s ‘focus fine-tuning’ feature more successfully with the tamron than i managed with the pentax lens.

I needed an everyday lens, it fits most purposes if you don’t need telephoto. Nice sharp pictures, very nice aperture range. Item came in without a scratch, and has been on my 40d ever since. Not too bulky, well built, handles well, fast af albeit a bit loud (i don’t notice any more). Suitable for a lot of situations, low price, good performance – if you have a crop body and looking for a non-canon alternative lens, this one should be considered.

Fantastic lens and works perfectly with my canon 550d. No issue whatsoever and considerably cheaper than a canon one.

  • Huge improvement over kit lens

  • Great quality in terms of picture, but too prone to fungus. Loud auto focus, so not good to video.

  • Fantastic upgrade!

I use this lens for 12 hours a week for my residency at a nightclub. It works great on my 600d, it’s very durable and the wide angle is very useful when there isn’t room to step back any further. Also very good i’m low light conditions, much better than a kit lens.

I spent a lot of time reviewing lenses before selecting this product. I wanted a lens to replace the kit lens that i had bought with my pentax k-5 last year. The kit lens is ok but is a little soft and doesn’t have a great quality feel. Luckily i managed to find all my short list lenses on photozone review site so felt that i had some consistency across rival products and my current kit lens. This tamron 17-50mm lens came out top for image quality. I have not been disappointed. This lens is really excellent. It feels solid in construction – all parts moving well but with a firm feel. The image quality is superb, far higher than one would normally expect of a zoom lens. I know the lens is built for a pentax kaf fit but it also feels like it is meant to fit this camera – the size, weight and feel of it complement the camera perfectly.

Use this on a 50d along with a canon 85mm f1. 8 it’s not as sharp or as contrasty as the canon lens, but then that’s unfairly comparing a zoom to a prime. For the money the tamron is outstanding, just don’t twist the focussing ring while in af mode as i have done, luckily no damage, but if didn’t feel clever when i did it. Images are razor sharp, i use it as a general walkabout but its great for landscapes so long as you zoom to above 20mm otherwise the barrel distortion becomes noticeable, though nowhere near as much as the standard canon ef-s 17-85mm zoom kit lens. Examples of the images i have taken with it are here:[most of these were taken with either the ef-s 17-85mm, the ef 85mm and the tamron, processed wth adobe lightroom. ]

Good replacement for the horrible kit lens.

Amazon are treading a fine line here: the product is described as ‘new’ but the one i received clearly had been opened and used and included a hoya filter fitted to the lens with a finger print on. I’ve had a quick look and all seems fine with the lens so far, however selling a opened and used item is new is not an honest way to proceed.

This barely ever leaves my camera, i only swap it for the 50mm 1. It’s incredibly convenient, 17-50mm on a crop sensor is a very versatile range, distortion has an odd pattern to it but in general use is hardly noticeable. It is slightly soft which is a shame, pictures are never as tack sharp as you’d like them to be, but f/2. 8 throughout is a life saver and perfect for filming video.

Bought it to replace my kit lens in k70 and after some time this is the only lens i use. Very bright, provides focal lengths sufficient for street photography, very low distortion.

This lens was purchased as an upgrade to the very disappointing 18-55mm canon kit lens that came with my 400d. This tamron is leagues ahead of it in terms of build, and image quality. To start with from the box this lens looks and feels so much more substantial than any of my canon lenses. It is actually heavier than my 55-250mm telephoto and i see this as a good sign of the quality of construction and the materials used in the tamron. The 17-50mm focal range makes this an ideal everyday/walk around choice. I have used the lens at both extremes of wide and zoom and i’m really impressed with it. This lens doesn’t have image stabilization on it, but i honestly haven’t felt a need for it even in low light hand held shots, the f2. 8 aperture across the whole focal range make it very versatile in low light scenarios if you need to take a snap in less than ideal conditions. Not to mention the fantastic depth of field that can be achieved with this lense.

Bought this lens to match up with my canon eos 60d, and it delivers in still image use. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn’t too prone to develop fungus in lens elements. It never got moist or wet, just regular use. Other than that, it is a good piece of equipment, robust, reliable. In my opinion being a no frills upgrade from standard 18-55 canon lens (if you can cope with the above issue). If anyone may be interested, i’ll share some pics of issue.

Images are definitely crisper than the kit lens and the larger aperture helps in poor light. Autofocus is slightly noisy and the lens feels a bit bulky but this doesnt detract from its value as an upgrade.

The lens supplied with my pentak k-r was not cutting the mustard or any other condiment for that matter and so i started reading reviews for a suitable replacement and im glad that i went for this beauty. First off the construction is good the lens feels solid and well put together, as others have said it is quite a heavy lens but after carrying it around for a few days and with a wide camara strap attatched to the camara i can say that the extra weigh is worth it for the images it delivers. As to the pictures great very sharp throughout the range and beats the pentax standard lens hands down that little extra at the 17mm end realy makes a difference. Im very happy with this lens and would recomend that if you want something to replace your standard lens without breaking the bank this is the one for you.

Did a lot of research on this spec of lens. Was reluctant to pay full price for it as it has mixed reviews. However i got a used one from amazon today for £120. Let me just say i would happily have paid full price. I use a pentax k-3 and the results are just fantastic. Do not hesitate on this lens, you will not be disappointed. I have bought gear five times this price and they don’t come close. For sure this will be my stock lens for most shoots.

Well built, good clean images, it is a little heavy but it gives a feeling of confidence.

I use this as my everyday lens. I have had no problems with this – with the images or the actual lens itself. Works very smooth, would recommend.

Arrived very promptly from amazon who surpassed themselves this time. Ordered saturday night with 1st class postage. Arrived monday morning 9:30ami wanted a zoom lens for my a55 which i could use in lower light situations without breaking the bank. I found the sony prime lens i had was great but hard to use in the real world as you can’t always move into the places you want to be when taking photos indoors. For the price you can’t go wrong and i think this will be the default lens for me now. Picture quality is great and it’s quick to focus. My only criticism which is daft really is that it’s a little noisy when focusing which means if like me you want to occasionally use it for video then it could be an issue. But given the price and the fact primarily it’s a photo lens, it’s only a very minor gripe.

It produces some beautiful images under most lighting conditions. It was my carry around lens most of the time. The only criticism i have of it is that the autofocus motor was noisy. It had a harsh whirring sound which took quite a bit of getting used to. The focus was fast though, and usually spot on, and for me, the noise wasn’t really a big issue.

Bought it to cheaply replace a dropped pentax 17-70. This lens lacks the silent focusing and quick shift, but in all other respects is as good or better. Nice looking lens, very sharp, i haven’t needed quick-shift.

Product Description: Tamron SP A016 – wide-angle zoom lens – 17 mm –

After searching different lenses to replace my kit lens 17-55 i went for the tamron. The iq is far superior to what i was expecting, and the added bonus of macro i couldn’t go wrong, really glad i made the right choice. You won’t be disappointed buying this lens.

Tamron lens is good at its quality. It is a bit heavier than the vc version one. But this one is cheaper so i chose this one to replace my old canon 18-55mm. If your budget is higher, i suggest you buy the vc one that is lighter and easier to use. But this one is not bad, the price equals to the quality.

Got this lens from amazon in sept. Purchased for live music sessions mounted on a canon 40d as a step up from a general purpose travel lens. After recent testing in a couple of live venues, i’m really pleased with the results. 8 and the wider aperture compared to a standard lens is a huge plus for low light work. Build quality is good and feels sturdy and a nice weight. Auto focus is relatively quick, but is a bit loud compared to usm lenses (but that doesn’t bother me). Factor in the price and i am very happy with this lens. A good buy and would recommend.

Excellent lens for the price. Not in the canon l series bracket but good crisp images nonetheless. Well worth the money and you can always px it if you choose to upgrade.

It has already taken quite a lot of beautiful photographs. I can’t wait to see what else it produces.
