Tamron – AF 55-200mm F/4-5 – Tamron 55mm – 200mm f4 -4.6 Di LD macro for Sony
I have only bought this as a replacement whilst i get my main lens fixed (hopefully), which got sand in and has jammed on the shaft. This lens however was second hand and cheap at the price, but non the less good for general photography.
It’s a cheap lens with decent output. I needed a tele zoom lens for my canon 450d and did not want to spend a lot. I took decent photos with it, don’t expect high quality or using it in low light, but it does it job well and i don’t regret buying it. I recommend it to amateur photographers that need a zoom lens and have a small budget.
Excellent lens though in hindsight i should have bought myself a 18-200 lens which would have eliminated the need to change lenses.
I have had my sony a57 for quite some months now and i really wanted to get a better zoom lens. The sony 70-300mm zoom lens seemed like a fantastic lens. However i seen this lens for just a bit under £100 when the sony was nearly £200. I decided to take the chance and get this one manly down to the price and i have to say it has been one of the best purchases of the year. Now haven’t used it loads yet, but with what i have done has proved that this lens was worth every penny. The quality is perfect, couldn’t be better for the price. Now when i do take pictures of the birds i do normally have to use the digital as well as the manual lens zoom. But with this lens i can zoom in just enough to get a good shot. A lot better than the standard 18-55mm. The quality may not be as good as the sony’s but i have to say i wouldn’t expect better for this price.
Really amazing value optics for the price.

I have already reviewed this product, which was exactly as presented and as good as i could have hoped for.
Hard to fault this for the good qualities it has related to its affordable price range. It is a good opportunity for many on a tight budget to experience a new range in their photography. Beats the pants of the packaged lens from most of the dslr manufacturers. The fact is it is hard to find a lens capable of producing even reasonable images consistently without spending a lot of money (for most people), but this is definitely one of the golden opportunity lenses like the canon ef50mm f1.
The original canon lens at 55mm max was a bit restrictive when taking pictures from places where it was impossible to get close. I needed a lens that ideally was good for portraiture as well as getting closer to subjects withour loss of definition. This lens covers what i was looking for and picture quality is excellent. Tamron have been making lens’s for a long time and i had one back in the old 35mm days and the dedication to producing good quality products continues today. This lens represents such good value for your money and if one bears in mind the limitations of the lack of usm (is that worth 2-3 times more?) it is a must buy for anyone looking to go that bit further than the standard lens. Should also mention it does fit my eos 350d.
Bought this for upgrade from standard kit lens. I have used canon 55-250 lens before but i felt this lens is much better than the canon lens. The make of this lens gave a rich look and never felt like a cheap 90 quid lens. And the positive side is i also got the lens hood rather than spending for hood again. Can’t expect more at this price.
Excellent lens for the money. Only had it for 2 days so far but totally enjoying it. The sharpness is great, colours vibrant and contrast excellent. I’m using it on the sony a300. My one slight niggle is it seems to over saturate colours eg the grass looks a little too green but that can be easily rectified when editing.
A nice ef compatible lens for the price though obviously a little softer than more expensive lenses – you can see the loss in resolution when using the full 12mp on the eos1100d over other lenses. However is useless on autofocus, if that’s important to you.
Having always used canon lens with my camera (eos20d) this was very much a take a chance sort of purchase, however i have been very pleasantly surprised with the results obtained from this lens. Once unpacked it seemed of similar quality build to canon lens although the plastic mount i am not keen on, however, i am sure with careful use it should last the life of the lens, the only other minor quibble is the focus ring which does seem rather fragile especially when i read in the instructions focus should be set to manual before fitting lens hood other wise damage can occur, if that is the case, then it is quite possible i will forget to set the switch to manual one day when wishing to take a hurried shot, so to eliminate that, i have stuck a big white lable on the lens hood to remind me to set to manual before removing or fitting. Anyway on to the results, the small amount of use this lens has had so far has proved that this is a very good lens, i personalty do not care about focus motor noise but to me it is no louder than some canon lenses. Focus is very sharp throughout zoom range and colours are well reproduced, in fact in many cases better than canon lens. I really enjoy using this lens and it is now the lens of choice for most photography, calling it a macro lens seems rather an exaggeration but nevertheless you can focus well at reasonably close range. I have given this lens 5 stars as it excels in most of what it does and that alone far outweighs the minor quibbles, also the price of this lens puts in reach of most people which is also worth a star on its own. If you are undecided about purchasing one of these, take a chance as i did and you wont be disappointed.
I only received this lens about a week ago so im not in a position to offer a detailed review but from the images it’s produced so far im impressed. It’s surprisingly compact and although its a budget lens it feels well built and the zoom action is spot on. Iv not come across any major issues so far but have included a few observations below. It’s not the quitest lens when focusing on auto. Not an issue for me but if you were planning to use for wildlife it may cause a problem. The colours can seem a little muted when compaired to my other lenses although there really isn’t much in it. It has on a couple of occasions had trouble focusing in situations where the kit lens has not.
Second hand, cheap as chips, works well.
This is a very sharp lens for the money. Nice to use and good colour definition. It lacks image stabilization but for outside uses then good camera practices will make up for that.
Bought this as a second lens when travelling, does the job and a bit more compact than the 55-300 lens,, i.
I bought this lens as an alternative to my other tamron telephoto lens and i much prefer it. I found the other lens (70-300mm) produces less clear images when zoomed in. I just took this lens to new york and i’m more than happy with the results. A great buy when compared with the canon equivalent.
Good lenes however it is wanting, good first timer and is an upgrade from a kit lens but i feel it wont take long till you are looking for under the 55 and over the 200. All in all a good buy for the money, but once you get a look at the images better glass gives you will notice the difference. Dont get me wrong i have a macro 90mm tamron which produces amazing images, but i knew a month after buying this 55-200 lens i needed more and i am no expert. If you are looking for a good upgrade from kit lens, wait and save a little more and get a prime telephoto it will be worth it in the long run.
Could have paid 3 times the price and been no happier.

Damn good lens for the money

Much better than the kit lens

Great lens, better than the Sony version!
I use it with my canon eos 450dsmall, light and fairly inexpensive, a high image quality with regard to resolution, contrast and sharpness.
Not the best lens in the world but it works and i have had some good results with it. Nice and light for wildlife shoots, but a tripod (or monopod) is a must.
6 di-ii ld macro for minolta it is making a great photos with my sony alpha 390.
I love this lens bought for my cannon it fits fine works well , if it’s what you can afford go for it , it brings so much more to the range of photos you can take.
This lens produces great images that are very sharp and give lots of detial. It is a good size that is not too large and looks quite cool on the end of my sony a300. At the price of under 100 quid i would really reccomend this lens. I am an amateur photographer so dont know too much but i rate this lens highly,.
I tried one of these and was amazed at the quality for the price. It is small, light and well made (plastic lens mount). Image quality is only a little less sharp than the equivalent canon lens (although this has image stabilisation built in but is three times the price). It is certainly very adequate for nearly every purpose, although it is best suited to entry level dslrs. I can’t think of a negative point worth making. Very particular you can’t go wrong buying it.
Very good quality, extremely good dof, easy to use good quality photos, would recommend this lens to beginners and professionals alike.
I brought this because i’d used the kit lens for a while but was bored of having to get so close to my subject. Oddly as soon as i put it on i started missing the 18mm range but that was my choice to keep the price down. The lens itself was fitted to a sony a57 and the quality of the images are great. I’m not an expect so whether they are better than the kit lens – i don’t know but it gives you freedom to take a wider range of photographs and makes using the camera more enjoyable. I’d stuck with a cheaper model simply because i had no experience of using different lens and didn’t want to start throwing money at something that might not match my ability. The images are clear and sharp. The weight is not noticeable and the range is good. I’d recommend to anybody who just wants to get started with their dslr but not break the bank.
Perfect lens for my canon slr camera, great for amateur photographers while learning new skills, very affordable so you can hold out on paying for more expensive lens until you’ve mastered the art. This is good for newcomers to slr.
This lens is amazing value for money. It is a tamron lens and the equivalent canon counterpart is almost 3 times the price. It came well packaged and included an instruction leaflet.
The lens arrived very quickly and in good condition. It is what is says on the can and from early use i feel is a good value for money purchase.
I originally bought this lens as an all round lens so that l would not have to carry other lens with me on a day tripit is ideal for my needs and the quality of the pictures is good. I would recommend this to anyone.
Ok so you have your shiny new digital slr, i sold my eos300d after many years of use to upgrade to a 450d and decided to get a better telephoto, reading the reviews i opted for the tamron and all i can say is it was a revelation. I thought, (perhaps foolishly) all cheaper lenses were the same, but compared to canon’s own lens this really shines and makes the kit lens pictures look awful, even after adding a 430ex 2 speedlite flash the canon lens was still awful but the tamron is brighter sharper and somehow gives a much better picture even on full auto. If you are going to add a lens to your eos dslr then buy this tamron, i’m no tech expert on photography but i can see a huge difference when using the tamron, whereas canon should be ashamed of the rubbish they can bundle with their medium priced dslr’s. The tamron also seems to find a focus lock easier than the canon lens, someone out there might be able to explain all this, but all i can say is i am truly amazed by the quality of tamron and wish i had known this earlier. Get this lens before someone realises how cheap it is.
Already given a review on this item. Still very pleased with it all round. Knew what i required before bying this lense.
Purchased this to compliment the tamron 17-50 f2. 8 & numerous sub 55mm primes i have. Before picking this up i tried out the sony 55-200mm which people informed me was a re-badged version of the tamron. I’m not sure if this is actually true or not but what i do know is the tamron, though plastic, is better constructed than the sony and feels nicer in the hand. Picture quality & colours from the tamron are also more pleasing, especially in the sharpness department. For the price, this is pretty much a no brainer if you need something longer than 50mm.
A price worth it for the light lens money i spent with a wedding picture taking plan worked ok wow.
