Great zoom lens, pro: price, lens hoodcon: no is, noisy auto focuswas a very quick to arrive.
Very happy with purchase and good value.
This lens is a great second lens to go with the kit lens you probably got with your camera (for me eos1000d and 500d)love this lens focuses great in good light. Have used it in 35-40 mph winds during a rugby game and you definitely need a mono-pod (i bought a cheap one from amazon for £9. 00)as others have said it weighs a bit and can get very heavy after a few hours tripod/mono-pod less. Any questions leave a comment.
This is a great lens for its price, but i’d highly recommend using a tripod even in sunny conditions as camera shake becomes quite evident (when zoomed) even at faster shutter speeds. If you can afford a lens with image stabilisation, i’d go for that instead. That said, this lens is still a great buy & produces some quality images.
Great little lens and very at price.

Very lightweight, so its handy to travel with yet it has a solid feel making it easy to grip. It produces great shots in light environment however in low lighting environment it proves difficult to get sharp shots. Overall a fantastic first lense for a mid-weight photographer and good value for money.
I bought this lens about eight months ago for my canon 350d. If like me you bought the kit that comes bundled with the 18-55mm lens you’ll notice there is a big gap when it comes to zoom/telephoto shots, this is a great budget tele-photo zoom lens that does what it says on the tin, and fills the gap nicely. I bought this usm version, (it comes in an even cheaper non usm version), after reading reviews by other users that complain that the non usm lenses tend be to a lot louder. So if noise is not an issue, you can get this lens even cheaper. I am an amateur photographer at best and still learning, but after using the lens for a while i was disappointed to learn that the f stop values really do make a big difference – the widest aperture you will be able to set this lens to is 4. 6 at 300mm, if your really serious you need a fast lens like f/2. 8, and definitely with is (image stabilisation) – the lens is not that heavy (for me), but during a long shoot it starts to feel like a cannon (pardon the pun), the lens really protrudes out at towards the 300mm end, and if you hold the camera pointing straight down, expect lens creep. Add an external flash onto the hot shoe and expect a real workoutmy wife complains its way too heavy – especially with a speedlite mounted on top, just carry a tripod if you expect to be on a long shoot, or mount the external flash on a tripod (you’ll need something like a speedlite wireless remote for this, expensive, but its tiny and weighs next to nothing and gets the speedlite off the camera). Having said all that, i have got some really great shots with this, and overall for the price you pay for this lens it’s a real good value for money.
Purchased this item from ‘used’ section on amazon. It is a great lens to compliment my 18-55 and 50-200 usm lenses and having used it for birdlife snaps already it has turned out to be an excellent choice and great value. Lens is fairly heavy to hold steady for any length of time and something to rest on would give steadier shots on a windy day.
Impressive piece of kit, bought for my daughter taking photography for her degree and ticked all the boxes she needed initially. Next stage up will be the 400 with macro.
Fantastic, replaces my older version, but now usm111.
I’ve owned this glass around 3 months now. There are many reviews out there that don’t rate this lens. Many compare it to canon l series lenses. There is no comparison bewteen such lenses. You often get what you pay for, so if you can afford l series lenses in this focal range at over £1000, go for it as they are unbeatable. However, if you want a high performing lens for your canon eos camera for little money, this is it. Its near silent usm autofocus motor is fast and doesn’t seem to ‘hunt’ much unless shooting in the dark, which in the main, you won’t want to do with this lens. It gives an actual 120-480mm focal length (35mm equivalent) on eos cameras (which have a 1. 6x crop factor due to the aps-c size sensor). My experience of using this lens is that is produces sharp images throughout the focal range, particularly on a bright day.
