Opteka 650-1300mm – Excellent product for the money

Had to return item as not compatable with my camera.
Well first, as per other entries, it is worth remembering that this is not a professional lens that will be likely to get you the high class images by professionals get with their £££ lenses although in the right conditions and with time and practice you can have a pretty good go and the images i have taken so far i am satisfied for my own records. This is a great way to understand using iso settings and manual focus and as helped me get a better understanding of my camera and also my abilities. If you cannot afford ££££’s and like photography with the option to get a better range, therefore likely to reduce disturbance for wildlife (my hobby) then this is a pretty good option. I also do digiscoping where i have been fairly successful with (in my books anyway) but this lens gives me me the gap i need where digiscoping does not suffice. On a final note where i did not have my scope with me i was able to get a reasonable view with the lens and adaptor at an equally good distance, its just that it was too far to photograph.
My husband has been looking for a telephoto lens at an affordable price, for some time. As an amateur, he is delighted with this product. It exactly fulfills his requirements, now he’s got used to it.
Like previous reviewers, you know your not getting the best ever lens here. . Having said that it does the job, not looking for perfection but brings objects a lot closer that the standard lenses. Time and care are needed with focussing and lot’s of patience is required. Master that and then the next obstacle is getting your focal lengths correct. The lens is not letting a lot of light in so you may need to step up to gain better results. All in all a reasonable lens for the money, just don’t expect miracles.
This is a very nice bit of kit, well made which i didn’t expect for the price but i’m having great fun with it. I found it very heavy to just hold and mounted on a sturdy tripod still get a bit of wobble when trying to manually focus bit i got my self to baby tripods and it works a treat.
A little heavy but now i have had time to play with it and taken some photos i now think that for the cost it excellent value as a nikon one would have cost me a hell of a lot more.
-
Reasonable quality for the money (but forget the 2x converter)
-
Great lens for the money but not for biginners
-
opteka

The arrived early the only problem the outer box was well packed but inside the bag the lens cap was damaged and also slight damage to the lens tread this did not effect the prefect use.
Not a bad lens at all, this is not of the same quality of the so-called marque lenses but if like me photography is a hobby that you cannot afford to throw ££££’s at a lens then this will certainly suffice. All completely manual of course but who wants everything auto anyway, the lens is well made (but heavy if you are carrying it around for any length of time) and the images whilst very good are not 100% perfect but for the cost of the lens they are acceptable. A tripod is certainly required.
I have a nikon d3100 and desires beyond my funds. With this lens i can take great shots of the moon (that’s all so far). Do not expect to take instinctive shots – you need time, a tripod and knowledge of how to set up your camera manually but isn’t that what good photography is all about?. I could only dream of a nikon lens of this depth and am very happy with what this adds to me repertoire. No, it doesn’t get out much, but i don’t feel guilty because of the price. I still have the lens but haven’t used it for ages. Now i am more familiar with what dslrs can achieve, and what quality glass can do, i will no longer use this lens. I now have a d7100 and my main lens is the 18-300mm. Combined with a x2 teleconverter i can get much more stunning and crisper shots of the moon (for example) than i could ever achieve with this opteka lens. You get what you pay for, so i’ve dropped from a 4 start to a 3 star rating not any lower as this is a budget consideration for most people.
Like many i suppose, i was tempted by the low cost. Do not regret the purchase of main unit, but 2x makes a marginally useable lens useless. As i’ve bought it mid-winter, the light is not ideal so will perhaps get better results later in year?took some good shots of the moon (as everyone does?) but other test shots of distant buildings did not compare favourably with a crop of shot taken with my 55 – 300mm nikon. (now just waiting for the new 200 – 500mm nikon to drop < £1k, then i'll buy one.
This is amazing lens very sensitive when focusing (never seen the moon so close) excellent.

Don’t expect this to be anything other than it is for the price, no electronics/motorisation, no autofocus etc. However, if you fancy a bit of fun with a big lens – no fast focussing though – and don’t have thousands of pounds to spend then this is for you. More expensive lenses will be better, but it is good value if you don’t expect too much and like to have to work out how to get the best from this lens.
I have gotten the best photos of the moon. Video also looks awesome if your camera supports it.
I bought this lens as i am going to south africa on safari soon, and having been there before knew that my 70-300mm lens just was’nt good enough for birding. I practised on some local wildlife and found the lens plenty good. Though heavy, a good tripod will help no end. I must say i did not use the teleconverter as i really dont want to push the lens too much, and as the lens is manual, you would be advised to use an exposure meter. I also invested in a window clamp support for use where you cant leave your car, and this also worked very well. There is a small problem with noise when you try to crop the picture, so i would recomment you get as close as you can when taking your picture. All in all a great lens for the money.
Hubby going to be beside himself, its a huge one :-).
Great value for the price,my husband was really pleased with the quality of the lens itself and the photographs, thank yu amazon.
Easy to use lens work great on a good sturdy tripod more you use it the better you get with the manual focusing. Get a remote shutter release and within a couple of days you will have some great shots being taken. Great lens amazing priceafter sale service is excellent, i e mail for some advice and got the right answer with in 24 hours.
ADVANCED OPTICS: Featuring an optimized design, this lens uses a series of 6 optical glass elements (one SD super-low dispersion) in 5 groups to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range.

Need to know it doesn’t come with lens caps and is totally manual. Zooming in and out isn’t smooth. I have difficulty using is with my nikon d7000. You get what you pay for basically.
Wasn’t expecting much to be honest but surprised to see the crators on the face of the moon. In good light it takes an ok photo but there won’t be much cropping of images and blowning them up because you will get noise in the photos. For the price i thought it to be worth it and its a work out at the same time to set it up, it is heavy so mind your gear as most dslrs are way more expensive than this telescope i mean lens.
Excellent service, all queries answered quickly and helpfully. Was a gift, and i was helped a lot i will use this company again, and recommend it.
This worked wonders at the wedding i was the photographer for. During the ceremony, i could sit at the back and eat crisps without upsetting anybody. Afterwards was even better because the lens received an unforgettable reaction for the group photo.
Excellent product for the money. Must use a quality tripod and auto/remote shutter release as it is so sensitive to movement.
I have just started to use this lens, although a bit heavy and manual, i found the photo’s came out quite well not competition quality but good for general showing, i wish i could down load a photo to show you all, all in all for the price to suit your budget it’s a good lens, but you do need a tripod.
SUPER ZOOM: 650-1300mm or 1300-2600mm with the 2x converter, this lens is not only a superb long range choice, but also performs well in a variety of scenes from sports and surveillance to lunar shots.

I brought this lens more for the phenomenal focal range i was promised. I’m happy to say i was not disappointed. I can easily fill the frame with structures roughly a mile away, and have no problem capturing birds in trees. The tele-converter is good too. Granted, this lens does not take the most amazing quality images, and i haven’t had the privelage to try a nikon or canon lens of the same range to compare it to. Regardless, for the price, i strongly recommend this lens for anyone who is interested in truly epic zoom. I’ve yet to try the lens out on stars and planets, but i’m assured it will perform just fine. :3i’m definitely going to be buying things from opteka again. S: i have a nikon d5100, and seeing as though it’s not listed in the camera compatibilities in the title, i thought i’d just let you know it fits fine :3).
This is a heavy lens, that performs as predicted. Being a slow lens, optics can appear dull in low light conditions. A sturdy tripod is definitely required for long range shots. Your ability to use the full range of manual camera controls will be tested. However, be advised that this lens falls into category of ‘luggable’ or ‘transportable’ due to its heavy metal construction, so be prepared to develop a few aches and pains in your arms in the short termfinal note. Lens comes with a doubler extension that transforms native 325-1300mm to 650-2600mm. This can be left out of the equation when not required, which will save a few ounces.
All i wanted was an affordable lens to bring me close to wildlife, flowers and the moon. You know you will not be getting competition grade images at this price, but i am completely satisfied with this lens.
Excellent product easy to use.
I purchased this lens because i’m only a keen amateur and didn’t want to spend thousands on a nikon telephoto. The only problems i have with this lens is the caps are too loose and fall off at will, as for the pictures i’ve taken so far so good. First night i received the lens it was a half moon fully lit on a frosty night, and it brought up all the pimples on the man in the moons face very clearly. Next i took up on the local hill and tried it on somethings i knew the distance of, and it worked very well. Next i took it out for a spot of wild life shooting, and sod’s law there was only a cormorant about, but i got a good shot of it taking off the water. Now all of these were shot off a tripod and that was something i had up grade the next day, as it is a fairly heavy lens. On the whole i’m very happy with this item. Delivery was before time, and well wrapped. And my only gripe, the lens caps, well a bit of stick on velcro fixed that problem. Now the only thing left to try is when the motorcycle racing starts at oulton park, how good it is in that field.
Reckon it could work reasonably well in static situations, but too clumsy for what i want, ie wildlife photography ¨on the hoof¨.
This is a very good lens for the price i use mine on a nikon d3100 it has to be used in manual mode so takes a little getting used to but with a bit of practice it works really well, the instructions are easy to follow and set up is quite simple, it is best used with a strong tripod but i have taken some good shots hand held with fast iso & shutter speed, all in all an excelent lens at introductory level.
SOLID CONSTRUCTION: Full metal body and rear mount allow this lens to withstand wear and tear much better than plastic lenses while commanding a rugged, solid feel when using.

It is hard to use but the shots it provides are worth it. The focus ring has very limited travel making focus hard, as only the tiniest move will be the difference between a great shot and an out of focus blur. The minimum focus of 5-6 meters is a bit excessive imo but i guess that is the nature of a lens like this. It is usable hand held on 650mm but it has to be a sunny day and use iso 2000. Attached photos were taken at the local zoo at 650mm, using a nikon d7000 body, using iso 2000 and hand holding the lens. (for better results use a tripod).
It came as what the pic shows and also it is very good. The clarity of the lens is also very good.
I have always wanted a telephoto lens for my nikon d3100 but to purchase a genuine nikon lens was financially beyond my means but, after reading numerous reviews, i decided to purchase this opteka 650 – 2600, which ismuch more affordable. This opteka lens is simply fantastic, it is a big lens and is best supported by either a tripod or mono pod, don’t be afraid of ordering this lens, you’ll be amazed by the quality of you photographs. My order was delivered on time and very well packaged, i would be happy to order from 47th street photo should i ever need to.
MANUAL FOCUSING: This lens has preset f-stops that correspond with the focal length at which you are shooting.
