Canon EF 28-105mm f/3 – Very Good Lens

The build quality (both look and feel) of this lens is far superior to the stock lens supplied with the 400d. Since purchasing this lens i’ve had little need to use the stock lens for wider angle shots but i still carry the stock lens around just in case. This lens focuses very quickly and is very sharp. I’ve used it for landscape, action and macros and have had extremely good results in all areas. If you want to step up from the stock lens and you are on a budget, then this lens is a very good choice. A very pleasant surprise comes out of the box.

My original review gave this lens two stars and said the optical performance was poor. It is the photographer’s performance that was poor. The lens is actually rather good, or rather my copy of it was, i cannot say anything about the consistency of quality. Used properly it is not far behind the much more expensive 24-70 f/4l is usm in terms of image quality. It is a useful range of focal lengths, a reasonably wide aperture and is quite well made, and has usm focussing. Compared to more modern lenses it lacks is adn compared to ‘l’ lenses it is less robust and lacks sealing against moisture and dust. Far from being useless i reckopn this is an under-rated second-hand bargain.

Excellent condition no problems with it.

Please with the lens but not use it yet.

Packaging could have been a little better but it arrived promptly with no fuss. An excellent lens for a good price.

I bought one of these from a well known auction site for about £80. It’s a good all rounder and gives me a bit more scope than my nifty fifty ef-50mm. I’ve produced some really good photos from it with great colour and detail. Agree with other reviewers about it excelling when it’s stopped down, it does take a while to figure out how to get the best from it. Generally very happy with this lens.

I have used canon camera for years. This lens replaces a previous 28-85mm walkabout, and is definitely both clearer in result and better in range. It is not an l glass lens, and cannot be compared to an is lens either. But at the price, in normal light, it is absolutely excellent.

It is a cheap none l lens that has a very fast auto focus if you working on video you cant hear the motor adjusting. However this is not a 58mm front. So any caps or filters will not fit so make sure you have the right ones.

The lens came quickly and was well packed. I have now taken 500+ photos and i am pleased with the results which is what i would expect from a canon lens even though this one is relativly old (previous model, red spot rather than white).

Very good lens, but i bought used and it’s stuck a little bit when you zoom in, except this is perfect.

I use a variety of lenses, yet this one is the one that stays on my camera all of the time. It is versatile, extremely quick focussing, and built to last. Image quality is incredible, and probably one of the best lenses you can get shy of the l series. A perfect replacement for the 18-55 kit lens on the 400d.

Like one of the other reviewers i bought mine second-hand. 5, it’s a bit soft, but step it down a bit to f5. Not l or is sharp, but definitely a step up from kit lenses. One thing i have noticed is that this lens gets softer towards the limits of it’s range i. It’s best to use it in the middle of the focal range and stepped down to f8-f16 it’s great. I’ve used it for landscapes (night time), with a tripod and it’s been very sharp.

Buen objetivo, enfoque rápido y preciso, buena calidad de imagen, relación calidad-precio estupenda. El servicio de entrega muy efectivo, y en general por su calidad se puede decir que es un objetivo en lineas generales muy bueno. Here are the specifications for the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3:

Hi,i have this lens from few months and i have to say is superb. I have also 17-40l and have to say is hard to see different between these two lenses. 28-105 is spot on on my 5d, cos is walk around lens, which aparently i have the most time on my body. Colors fab, af quick like in my l 17-40, maybe is not as sharp as wide open, just need little more ps if you want superbly sharp photo. I bought far less from ebay, but it is excellent lens, just dont really understand why many people say is rubbish. And one more remember must be macro version(macro must be write on lens, not just flower, is japan ver which is far better than ‘only flower’ taiwan ver. . Dont why it is like that but is.

This lens is from canon’s consumer range and it’s designed to be a good all rounder. The lens is a nice weight, it feels substantial and well built. A full time manual focus ring is on board as well as a distance scale. The focus and zoom rings are smooth and the whole package feels right. Now down to the nitty gritty – image quality. The image quality is simply superb but it does need a little consideration to get the best from it and i’ll explain how. At the extreme ends of the focal length the lens is soft, more so at the 28mm end. But if the lens is stopped down to anything around f10 and above the image sharpness is unbelievable. Now i realise this isn’t possible in every situation but images will be more than acceptable at any f-stop but when they are stopped down they are utterly pin sharp.

This is the first usm lens i have owned for my canon eos 400d. Before i bought it i was a bit dubious as to how much the usm would add, but now all of my non-usm (all of them damn it) lenses seem slow and laboured when auto-focusing. Plus, all the focusing is internal (same with all usms) so never gets longer when focusing (i didn’t realise this until bought it. It does make it slightly heavier but if you want a light camera you probably shouldn’t have an slr anyway. As for the actual lens, great addition to kit. I have substituted the kit lens (18-55mm) for this one as it is a reasonable wide-angle (enough for everyday use and small crowds) and much better zoom. 5 which so far has made a massive difference, esp mid range.

I have not used the lens to its full capability as yet, but when i checked everything seems to be fine with it. When i asked a question i had a quick response from the seller and delivery arrived within the expected time and was well packaged to prevent transit damage. I am was unsure about buying a used lens but i am very please with the lens and the price i paid.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • very happy with the lens

  • Excellent lens – probably worth more than the cost, given the quality of result

  • Four Stars
