SAMYANG 85 mm F1 : Fully Manual Focus Lens – must have patience with it!!
Very well made lens, very sharpand would recommend.
Lovely bokeh, tack sharp images. The only thing is the very noticeable ca when shooting branches and whatnot against the bright sky for example. Other than that, i’m having so much fun with this lens at d moment.
I have used nikon cameras and nikon lens for over 35 years now. I still have all the cameras and lens i have ever bought. I had a little bonus at the end of the tax year, thank you hm inspector of taxes, so i took a chance and purchased the nikon ae version of this lens. Wow, portrait photo’s are superb from my d7000. Yes it can suffer a little flair when shooting towards bright light sources but the so do half of my nikon lens. Being old school the manual focus is not a problem, my wife took about 10 mins to get the hang of it on her d3200 producing some very good photos. Pound for pound one of the best lens i have ever bought.
Very nic lens had o problem at first thought i had a problem just a reflection.
Beautiful, creamy images and the overused term ‘monster boheh’, but in this case warranted. Manual system takes some getting used to and the depth of field at f/1. 4 is razor thin, but i love this lens. Well made, reassuringly heavy and positive aperture click stops.
Has become fixed to the front of my x-e1 as if glued on. It took a little while to get used to as it as manual focus only and the temptation to shoot at f1. 4 is at first overwhelming so with a narrow dof and relying on my manual focussing skills i missed focus on a hell of a lot of shots. Get direct strong sunlight on a white subject and expect a lot of purple fringing, but that’s easily corrected in lightroom. Don’t point the thing at bright objects harshly lit and you’ll start getting lovely results. There is a crispness to the results but a certain delicate softness which is what makes it such a great portrait lens. A little large on my small fuji body but with practise i’m nailing the focus more and more often and the results are wonderful. Oh and the bokeh – to die for.
I am absolutely amazed by this lens. I was reluctant to the brand, reluctant to manual focus. This is a great lens, extremely sharp, even when used with a nikon d90. The manual focus is really great, and, as long as you know that your camera is capable of confirming focus, you’ll be fine.
A beautiful lens and a joy to use.

My ffirst non-motorised focus lens. Focis is easy to achieve and stable. Very good valie for the price.
4 this sharpness improves a little when stopped down to f2. The manual focus is not a problem as i have been using manual focus lenses for many years. Very happy with my purchase.
I bought this in canon fit to use with a simple adaptor on sony full frame e-mount. I’m comfortable when using a manual focus lens with my sony mirrorless because of the helpful focus peaking and the live view magnification. It’s a fantastic lens for the money. In focus areas are very sharp, when wide open the edges suffer a little, typical of any 1. 4 lens but the centre is perfect, great for portraiture. Colour and contrast all fantastic. I have used it for both photo and video. I’ve owned l glass like the canon 24-105 zoom and the quality from this prime easily beats that lens.
The focus distance, you have to get use to the distance between the camera and the subject and adjust yourself accordingly to get a sharp image.
Buy it if your after and good value for money portrait lens im happy with mine give it a try.
Isn’t autofocus but on nikon d700 the focus indicator comes on solid when in focus.
Great value lens and really sharp at 1.
Very pleased with this lens. I read a lot of reviews before buying and it is, indeed, a lot of lens for the money. If you are happy with fully manual shooting (focus, aperture, shutter speed and iso) you can get great portraits and stunningly sharp photographs with this excellent lens.

I bought this lens for its bokeh qualities, it is a super fast lens at an affordable price.
It changed my view to photography, an excellent lense. Downside its manual and once you are aware of it, you are on the ball.
10 star for the seller , 10 star for amazon 10 star for this lens , fast delivery , good service. This lens is absolutley amazing , the only problem this lens don’t have af is manual but if you are good no problem and you save hundreds and hundreds of pounds. The quality in the pictures are extraordinary.
I’m sure i’ve reviewed this before. This is used on my sony a77. The pictures are stunning and 1. 4 it is very fast with great bokeh. It is a manual focus lens but i love manual focus so it suits me. As my pro snapper friend said it’s the best 85mm manual lens he has used. It is what you wouls call ‘engineered’ it’s heavy, beautiful and made incredibly well. If it was auto focus it would cost at least £1,200 in my opinion.
Has the a pin so the camera can be set to many automatic settings, no just manual. This focal length is generally used for portrait, i have used it for sport when you can get close to the touch line and the action is not too far away.
For the money it’s the best lens i’ve ever had the pleasure to use. Remember it’s manual and a little fiddly but a joy to use.
Quality glass with pin sharp pictures. Takes a lot of hit and miss practice at f1.
Manual focus, but very easy to focus due to the long throw and it’s sharpness, even wide open. Downside is either due to the aperture or coating, ca appears in high contrast areas. This is however incredibly easy to remove in lr.
A great quality, solid build, manual focus lens, the perfect budget choice for portrait photography, love it. Only downside is no af but that doesn’t matter if you aren’t lazy.

This is nonautofocused lencs.
Sometimes hard to focus (depth of field is very thin a f/1. 4), but great for low light. I bought the nikon mount, so i could use it on my dslr and adapt it to mft. Easier to focus on the mft with focus peaking.
Well i bought this as i had read quiet a few reviews but was not expecting this. 4 lens but i was shocked how good this is ,,,,at 1. 4 the background is blown right out and further up the clarity is just amazing i was speechless. I recommend that you learn aperture priority and pop one of these on you will not be disappointed.
This lens is a gem and amazing for portraits. Dont be put off by manual focus. Well happy with this little beauty and a must for any photographer.
I like the this lens, it’s made very well. It’s slow to use so it makes you think of what you’re doing.
Quality build and focal precision.
As usual, top optical quality from samyang. I own the 12mm, 35mm, 50mm & 85mm and can say that i like them much better than my canon 135mm f2 or 16-35 f4. None of the samyang lenses have autofocus, and to me this is an advantage as it makes me a better photographer. In the old days all lenses were manual, there was no photoshop and yet legendary images were produced. I am using it with magic lantern focus peaking which makes manual focusing quick and accurate.
