Sigma 18-200mm F/3 – Five Stars

I like the range from 18 to 200mm it means you are swapping lenses much less and can be used as a good all rounder from standard lens to telephoto. Has a long focal length which reduces the versatility at the 18mm end, wide ranging aperture is good but overall a fantastic lens considering the good value.
Good general purpose lens, much lighter and easier to carry on the camera than earlier nikon or sigma models, performance is good though not outstanding as you would expect from a lens of this class. An ideal lens for casual and tourist photography.
Sharp zoom, lightweight (430g. The quality of this zoom lens remains constant even at long focal lengths being able to use f / 7- f / 8 (light ). 18 / mm obviously a bit of distortion, but clear; better use f / 8. 200 mm, sharper in the center and the edges with f / 6. Great for photos in the presence of light. In case of low light must act primarily on the sensitivity, exposure and, of course, rely on a tripod. At this point, the objective will be able to also give in these situations the best. Autofocus very fast, responsive and accurate if used mainly with autofocus single central pointcomparable to other higher cost objectives. A objective of this quality should be coupled with a prosumer body or with a high-level body to improve the level of the entire set. Obviously with objective with a brighter zoom and f4 constant at all focal lengths the results would be better with low light, exceptional under normal conditions. Recommended for travelers who want to travel light and / or can not bring much photographic material.
Let’s get this out of the way first: any superzoom is going to be a lens of compromises. At 11x zoom range, this lens is no exception – it’s not going to compete for image quality with the high-end canon ‘l’ zooms, many of which are no more than 3x or 4x zoom range. Now that we’ve dealt with that, this is a mediocre superzoom at best. There are a lot of options to choose from in this market: sigma have an 18-250, an 18-300, as well as this lens; tamron have an 18-270 and a 16-300; and of course canon themselves have an 18-200. I’ve tried all of these at various times. This lens is certainly at the lower end of the sharpness scale. Centre sharpness is acceptable, especially when stopped down to f/8. But wide open, especially if you stray to the edges of the zoom ranges (worst at 180-200mm) edge sharpness is best described as poor. Having said that, at £250 this lens is around £150 cheaper than either the tamron or canon offerings, so those on a tight budget may well want to give this lens a try. Superzooms are perfect lenses to carry around on a small dslr when travelling and space is at a premium, or for those short trips where photography isn’t the primary goal, but you don’t want to be without a decent camera.
Got this lens yesterday and its perfect great build and so far the pics are great good value to.
Nice lens the only problem is you get fisheye at 18mm a part from that a nice handy lens to use.
- Very pleased with this lens.
- It is so much better than I ever thought it would be
- An ideal lens for casual and tourist photography

I bought this lens from amazon two weeks ago for my canon 100d. I wanted a better zoom than the canon lens supplied with the camera, but didn’t want to spend a fortune as i am an amateur, but learning. I am very pleased with the results so far. The pictures are sharp and clear with good colours. I recently went to the photography show at the nec and tried different lens before deciding on this one. It’s true there may be better lens costing two or three times as much, but for me this is an excellent lens for this stage in my photography. It’s very easy to use and not too big and heavy. I’m having fun taking pictures with it at the moment and i’m pleased with the results. Excellent customer service from amazon, as always.
Ordered this instead of the canon model. Have not long started using it but to date have no complaints with the quality of photo.
I am copying here my dyxum review:compared to: sigma 18-200 3. 3 (first version)positive:focal rangesize, weightsharpnessquiet hsm focusingaf accuracynegative:vignettingaf speedreview:i used to have the older (first) screw drive version of the lens which served me well for some time, but i wanted a video capable lens for outdoor events – and the screw drive was just too noisy. The new version is better in:1. Sharpness – it is actually pretty sharp wide open for a superzoom (as far as i can see from web images, it is sharper than the tamron 16-300). Close up capability – better magnification, better sharpness. Hsm quiet enough although clicks can be heard when changing direction. Af seems to be more accurate than the old version. It is worse than the original:1. Af speed – i was surprised by this, but the screw drive on the old version was noticeable faster than the hsm in this new version. It’s still usable, but especially at longer focal lengths it moves in steps around the final position which may result in missed shots. Having said that, it may be the price for better focus accuracy – it’s spot on all the time, while i used to have quite a few misfocused outliers with the old version.
I was full of anticipation when i bought this lens, and had some reasonable results using the macro end. However, when i used it out in the landscape, there was unacceptable vignetting, particularly between focal lengths 22mm and 34mm, at a wide aperture. (curiously it wasn’t too bad at 18mm). The retailer agreed this shouldn’t happen, spoke to sigma, and i was given a replacement. However, exactly the same thing happened with the second lens, which points to a problem with the optics. I have now returned this lens and decided, reluctantly, to opt for the more expensive nikon 18-200. On the positive side, the lens is light, handles nicely, good macro, and very good price – i’m therefore giving it three stars in anticipation of sigma sorting out the vignetting problem – although i personally won’t benefit from it.
I bought this lens to replace my 18-55mm standard lens. It is so much better than i ever thought it would be. I do not have to change my lenses as often as i used to. I was very brave and only took this lens on holiday with me to london. I managed to take all of my photos with this lens. Close up and distance photos.

Great lens for carrying all day, excellent sharpness and bokeh. Used all the time on my sony a58.
At this price, and covering the range that it does, this was never going to be a wonderful lens and it hasn’t surprised in that respect. In comparison with the sigma 8-16mm lens it was bought to complement, it falls short on quality but does a good job of matching image feel, meaning the colour and light in images isn’t so different that images from the two lenses are immediately identifiable. At least, not unless you check closely for chromatic aberrations, then they are. The three star ‘it’s ok’ sums the lens up pretty well. I don’t regret buying it but i’m not raving about it, either.
Perfect travel companion with excellent image quality for a tight budget. Lower build quality than their a series and still zoom ring but this is tolerable for its price range.
Amazing lens, so much better than my old 1.
Light weight easy to use, stabilizer very good and auto focus accuratethis is a good lens to use.
Build quality as expected from sigma, this is my third sigma lens.
Ultra-compact, all in one design

Excellent when i manage to keep my fingers clear of the focus ring.
Very good lens will use this one a lot for what i want.
Looking for a travel lens for my next holiday, i have tried a few of them over the last months but this one is definitely a keeper. For that price i doubt you’ll find a better product. Also it is smaller and lighter than the others. Barrel distortion at 18mm is minimal and picture quality is still good at 200mm (although you have to be very still despite the image stabilizer). Even when zooming in at 50% to crop the image, i still get a sharp image. Not as sharp as the sigma 30mm i use otherwise, but still very decent. Colours are good, although i find it has the same downside as the 30mm, i. It tends to overexpose a bit.
Includes SLD and Aspherical glass elements

Fast and near silent HSM autofocus

Includes Sigma’s Optical Stabilisation system
