Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3 – Five Stars

The af-s 18-35mm is an ultra-wide lens well suited to landscape photography. The image quality is remarkably good. Image sharpness isn’t far off what you might expect from a prime lens. Colour and contrast is nice indeed and resembles that look you get when shooting with a polarizer with deep blue skies and clouds full of detail. There is distortion, particularly at the wide end and this will be seen in real world shooting if you have a horizon or any other strong horizontal lines. Of course, this is easy to correct and shouldn’t concern a practical photographer. In the box there’s a hood which you should probably use if shooting wide. The lens itself is well built but the low use of metal and lack of weather sealing suggests it prefers the easy life. Still, it might not be tough but it is small and light, especially when compared with its heavyweight nikon stable mates, the 14-24 and the 16-35 vr. As a lens, it has no obvious flaws but nor does surprise and delight.

Initially i do not knew if i will buy this lens or 16-35, and i opted by this due to its lower price and size. I am very happy with its performance, sharpnes and light weight. Very good to use with circular filters because do not causes vigneting in the corners. The only issue is the distortion but the distortion correction in post processing can help here. So i am very happy with this lens, and i recomend for those who cant buy 16-35 and want a lightweight lens.

Very nice lens for the price. Not as high quality as the top range nikon stuff but a good quality wide lens for fx sensors. Light and reasonably compact compared to the bigger, heavier, more expensive but more premium nikon16-35 f4. If you want the extra 2mm you’ll have to pay more and go for that one but the 18-35 is very nice.

Unfortuantely due to the weather i have only used this a few times so far this year but the pictures taken using this lens have looked good both on the screen and printed. Good size and weight so no problem carrying this around all day.

This is a gem of a lens, very sharp, if your comparing this to a crop sensor lens, then its just shy of 10mm. No distortion in the corners which i had with a sigma. Couple of shots taken with this and a d610.

Bought this lens and it stays on my camera. It is light and a good price but delivers like a much more expensive lens. I was worried obout the reviews i read but shouldn’t have been top marks from me and i bought it second hand.

  • Perfect Lightweight Wide Angle Zoom.
  • This lens is fantastic, crystal clear
  • Happy enough.

I’m lucky enough to own a brilliant 14-24 but find it too heavy to carry around on landscape adventures. This little gem is a dream come true at about a third the weight and well under half the price. It also takes standard filters on a 77mm thread – unlike the awkward, heavy and eye-wateringly expensive holders/filters for the 14-24. Sure it misses an extra 4mm at the wide end but i’m more than happy to trade that for the massive weight reduction. Shooting at f8 – f16 on a d800e the 18-35 compares remarkably well with the 14-24. It isn’t quite as sharp in the corners but it really isn’t far off (given that the 14-24 isn’t perfect in this regard either). It doesn’t compare well wide open where the 14-24 is a much stronger performer. I’ve also used the canon 16-35 (mark 1, 2) and 17-40 in the past but i’m much happier with the results from the nikon 18-35. If you don’t plan to shoot wide open this really is a fantastic lens for the money.

Sharp – did i mention this lens is sharp ?. I know my sharpness happy snapping.

I use it for landscapes and so far it is flawless.

Brilliant lens as you would expect from nikon.

Excellent quality, and light enough to regularly take out and use – as opposed to a super-fast, heavy and bulky lens that’s always left at home.

Very light and capable for landscape photography when stopped down (to my favourite f7. 1 on d800) – results better than old 20mm d prime lens which has gone to live on my sony a7r.

Unless you are prepared to spend the best part of £2k on a lens, this will be your best bet for a d800/e/810 travel kit, imho. I really can’t fault this lens. The combination of sharpness, colour and weight makes it a bargain at the price.

A great addition to my lenses. Really clear images and no problems.

I was torn between this or paying £300 more for the 16-35. The lens – not the cost – was my main priority. I read lots of views, tried out another photographer’s copy and took the plunge. Light weight and easily transportable and 18-35 suits me just fine for landscapes. At the photography show at the nec i talked to several people on the nikon stand who were full of praise for this optic. It’s up there with any wideangle zoom nikon has made. This article pretty much sums it up for me: [.

With profile corrections in lightroom, it works wonders.

Optically spot on and easily rivals it’s bigger brother the nikon 16-35mm f4 g af-s ed vr lens – which i have owned and then sold after about a year as it was just as large and as heavy as my trusty nikon 24-70mm f2. So yes while this lens is made of plastic don’t let that put you off – this makes it very lightweight and so i’m happy to carry this in my bag in most situations. It doesn’t have vr but frankly that’s rarely going to be a big issue at this focal length. Very versatile for most photographic styles. So if your looking for something wider than 24mm look no further. S i have owned a few 20mm f2.

FX-format compatible, 1.9x ultra wide-angle zoom lens covering a focal length range from 18 to 35mm.

Light, fast and sharpwhen driven by my d750 these three essential characteristics have produced some of the best quality shots i have ever taken. Very little distortion or edge softness at 18mm and it just gets better from 20mm onwards. I can’t understand why some reviews i have read complain about the weight of this lens where ‘lightness’ is perceived as being less robust or more suited to amateur use. That’s nonsense, think about a light or heavy object hitting something hard. Which might come off worse?don’t hesitate purchasing this lens, you will not be disappointed.

I’ve used this lens a lot for events with ocf and landscapes. It can be very sharp f8+18mm on a full frame is plenty wide enough for most situations and everybody loves 35mmit’s very light weight and does feel a bit cheap but i’ve had it 4years with no issues. No vr but tbh it’s either going to have a high shutter speed or be sat on a tripod. I’ve made my money back on this lens but there’s no much resale value on these so consider a used one before going full price.

Exeellent results very pleased.

This lens fits you is you’re the type of photographer that wants to have as much as possible in the picture, this lens has a 100 degree view witch makes it perfect for shooting. This can be used for close ups and moving objects (like a child) the focus is great and fast. I’ve had it now for over 2 months and it is superbthe lens has a great feel when you hold it, it feels ‘expensive’. If you want a all around lens this will be great.I am using this lens with the nikon d750.

Very pleased with the lens works ok for me.

Excellent lens, lightweight but that doesn’t mean it’s not high quality. Image sharpness is good across the zoom range with the expected corner softness at the extremes but overall i’m very impressed with this lens for my d750.

Compact and light design with a weight of 385g for superior mobility.

Fantastic lens, i use for indoor photos and landscapes.

A nice quality wide angle lens, is light in construction which makes it a good travel fs kit extra.

I bought this lens after extensive research into wide angle zooms for my d800, and in spite of it being built largely from plastic i have been nothing short of amazed at the results it has produced. I am a self confessed pixel peeper so i know when a lens is sharp and this one is razor sharp across 95% of the frame. Sharpness is not everything i know, contrast, and especially micro contrast, has its importance for fine detail rendition, particularly in landscapes. This lens simply has oodles of itthe bottom line is, (for purists) that this lens will stretch your sensors capabilities, and in some cases, out perform it, its that good. The really important point to make though is that in the real world of picture taking this lens has everything going for it. It has a great feel to it, the zoom ring is silky smooth, the autofocus is fast, its lightweight and the build quality is nothing short of excellent. So finally, if the 18~35mm focal length fits your needs for your full frame camera, then just go ahead and buy this cracking optic, you will not be disappointed – just amazed.

Excellent piece of kit, worth every penny.

Well, i think the other reviews sum up what i would say. It’s a excellent lens, i’ve had it a while now and i can’t really fault it. I think its the best option for my d600, the cost is also a plus point.

This lens is fantastic, crystal clear, i went out yesterday to try it out and every photo was tack sharp, after reading lots of reviews praising this lens i decided to bite the bullet and add it to my nikon 24-120 and my tamron 150-600 to give me a good range of lens and i’m glad i did, colours and contrast are excellent and the ed glass helps with flare which there is none of in my photos. Do your self a favour and forget about the 16-35 vr and the 14-24 as this lens is perfect for an amateur like me, see examples of this lens on my d750.

I usually don’t write reviews, but i really felt that this lens deserved it. I used to shoot with a nikon d80 and a sigma 10-20mm and i absolutely loved that lens. It allowed me to shoot things from a really different perspective, it was very sharp and easy to carry, and had a great build quality. Plus, the price was affordable. Then i moved to a nikon d600 with the 24-85mm vr kit lens and i was missing that ultra-wide sometimes, specially for landscapes and travel photography, where often i like to travel light. I started looking for such a lens, but of course, because its full frame, the prices were crazy. I considered the 14-24mm but it was too bulky and expensive. Then the 16-35mm vr but it was also significantly larger, and also expensive. And then i finally found out about this lens, which is pretty recent, and after reading some reviews, i decided to go for it. It is super light and compact, and yet it does not feel cheap at all. The 18mm is not as wide as my 10mm on the dx format, but then again it is more than enough. And above all, the images it produces are super sharp.I have never had a lens this sharp.

Constructed with two ED and three aspherical lens elements for superior aberration compensation.

It would have got 5 stars, but the first one supplied was faulty. Amazon returns policy, however, meant that a replacement was with me the next day, easier than going to my local camera shopthe lens is small, light and plenty sharp enough for me. It’s not one i will use as often as other lenses, therefore it was not worth spending the extra for the more professional nikon wide angle zooms, but it is more than adequate for my purposes.

I was considering this or the 16-35 vr. . When i weighed it all up, for my purposes this is actually better. . Seriously guys, read the techie reviews and then ask yourself whether you want this on a hike or the much heavier one with vr. Nearly all of my serious landscape photography is on a tripod so don’t need the vr. . I certainly don’t need the extra weight when already carrying two cameras, water, tripod, food etc. As far as quality and sharpness go. . Although i haven’t used the 16-35mm, from reading reviews i don’t think there is a lot in it. My concern before trying the lens was flare. It’s actually very good at handling it from my experience so far with it.

Great to use very good definition i love this lens, a bit of a plastic finish but don’t be put off the performance is simply excellent.

Does exactly what is expected.

Substantial solid build quality, amazing optics and great picture quality. Can’t go wrong at whatever focal length, better than some prime lenses.

It’s light, accurate and worth every penny. Arrived quickly too, which is always a bonus when eagerly awaiting new toys.

Superior rendering performance at all focusing distances, from minimum 28cm to infinity.

I have been a lover of the late 90’s version of this lens from the very outset. Well made with great optics. So why upgrade to this latest model?. To be fair, the earlier model just lacked real edge to edge sharpness on the d800 but was passable on the d3x. I wanted a lens that was sharp, no matter what body i stuck it on. It is smooth in operation has no more distortion than it’s predecessor and is so light in eight, it’s a joy to carry.

For those on the fence between this and the 16-35mm f/4 i was too, i bought this for a trip to iceland i’ve just returned from and can say that over the 2 weeks of use this lens hardly left my camera. I was concerned with my d800 that either lens would show weaknesses, reading about the 16-35mm and it’s poor corners concerned me. Now i’ve not tried the 16-35mm but from full samples i’ve seen this beats it from my results. In that i have to say this is a great ‘budget’ (is there such a word in full frame photography?) lens. Nice and light, although compared to other fx lenses i have it feels much more of a dx level lens (i’d compare it to the dx 18-105mm i had years ago on my d90 in terms of weight and tactile use). No light leakage on long exposures in the day, flare decent. Zoom ring smooth and a decent turn distance from 18 to 35mm. Focusing very good from my use, although i tend to use it for landscapes so it doesn’t have to be the fastest but it was accurate. Overall very happy i chose this, all you are missing is vr on the 16-35mm and 2mm on the wide end, never really bothered me in use. Sharpness even in to the edges was very acceptable, distortion seems easily corrected in lightroom with standard profiles, no crazy distortion even without it.

Amazing lens, really good quality. Gives you perfect angle for landscape photography.
